Lions team reporter Tim Twentyman considers Stevan Ridley the favorite for Detroit's No. 3 running back spot.
Twentyman sees Ridley as a change-of-pace back behind Ameer Abdullah and passing-down specialist Theo Riddick. Of course, that's if he can stay healthy. Ridley looked sluggish last year in his first season back from an ACL tear and missed most of the Lions' offseason program for undisclosed reasons. Ridley has to hold off Zach Zenner, George Winn and rookie Dwayne Washington.

The Freep's Dave Birkett writes "there's no reason" Ameer Abdullah "can't break 1,000 yards rushing" this season.
Beat writers are rarely good numbers forecasters, but we pass these things along nonetheless. Abdullah managed 597 rushing yards as a rookie. Birkett also foresees an "uptick" in Abdullah's receiving usage after a 25-catch first season. Birkett predicts Abdullah will play a "bigger role in the offense," citing Calvin Johnson's retirement and the Lions' "desire to run more." Birkett goes as far as to already crown Abdullah the eighth best player on the Lions' 90-man roster.
