CALVIN JOHNSON AND THE LIONS' RECORD BOOK
1st in receptions (731).
1st in receiving yards (11,619).
1st in receiving TDs (83).
1st in receiving YPG (86.1).

Lions will have $12.9 million in dead money on their cap for Megatron in 2016. That after $9.7 million charge for Ndamukong Suh in 2015.

IF THIS IS IT, CALVIN JOHNSON HAD A UNIQUE CAREER.
Calvin Johnson has the third-most receiving yards over a player's first nine seasons in NFL history (11,619) -- Only Torry Holt and Jerry Rice had more. If 2015 was his last season, he'll never have won a playoff game.

If Calvin Johnson does retire, Alshon Jeffery may be one of Lions' targets.

Lions announce retirement of WR Calvin Johnson: 8/10 Disaster Rating
Calvin Johnson's impending retirement apparently has been known to the team for quite some time. Now, everyone is aware of it. The Lions are reportedly holding out hope that Johnson will change his mind, but it sounds like his career is finished.

This is obviously terrible news for the Lions. They finished the year on a hot streak, going 6-2 down the stretch, and it appeared as though that was going to carry over into 2016. That, apparently, won't be the case now, as Detroit has lost its primary offensive weapon.

Johnson wasn't the dynamic play-maker he was a couple of years ago, but he was still a dominant presence. His "down" year in 2015 saw him catch 88 passes for 1,214 yards. He turns 31 in September, so he still had 2-3 very strong seasons in the tank. In the wake of his retirement, Matthew Stafford will go back to struggling, and Detroit will probably continue to keep its playoff winless streak alive for quite some time.

This grade would've been a 10/10 two years ago. It's an 8/10 now because of Johnson's recent decline, but it still hurts a lot. This is a selfish retirement on Johnson's part, especially considering the advances in medical technology; he could've at least held out one more season to give the Lions a chance to finally win in the playoffs.

If Johnson is indeed done, he finishes with 731 catches, 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns. He'll be in the Hall of Fame one day, but he won't be a first-ballot entrant, in all likelihood, because he just didn't play long enough.

Wow that overview by Walter is HARSH.

Calvin Johnson - WR - Lions
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Lions' "goal" is to retain Calvin Johnson with a Larry Fitzgerald-esque extension.
That's after they convince him to keep playing. Johnson has yet to publicly announce his intentions, but multiple reports suggest he's serious about retiring. If he changes his mind, the Lions apparently won't be paying him his $15.95 million salary, which comes with a monumental $24 million cap number. Fitzgerald agreed to a two-year, $22 million deal under similar circumstances last offseason.

Calvin Johnson - WR - Lions
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Calvin Johnson has already called Lions ownership to "thank them for everything."
In other words, he's saying his goodbyes. The league and the media that covers it seem to be having a hard time believing that Johnson, who doesn't turn 31 until September, is actually retiring, but all his actions suggest he's deadly serious. Unfortunately, it's looking like we've seen Megatron play his last snap.
