Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Jim Caldwell compared his job to being an air traffic controller. Said "it's difficult, but it's a thrill." Said things are coming at him from every side at all times.

Lions DC Teryl Austin on the slow defensive starts: Wish I knew. Would have stopped it a few weeks ago. It's been a team-wide problem the second half of this season.

Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter said his opening scripts of around 15 plays are mostly first-and-second downs. Third down is more situational and more of a different list than that initial script.

Jim Bob Cooter: Kenny Golladay helps make a lot of big plays. "He's a talented young player." Said he's learning a lot this year. Golladay has been Detroit's deeper threat since he's returned -- has had one or two bigger reception plays per game. He's splitting No. 3 receiver reps with TJ Jones.

Jim Bob Cooter on what's going on at Tennessee right now: "Sounds like an interesting time down there."

Ameer Abdullah (neck), T.J. Lang, Travis Swanson and Jamal Agnew not participating in open part of Lions practice. Dwight Freeney returned after not practicing Wednesday. Also, D.J. Hayden is out of his red jersey and into a normal one.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter had been mentioned as a fringe candidate for the Tennessee job -- he played for the Vols.
