The Lions are in desperate need of a back capable of consistently converting short-yardage situations, particularly on third (and fourth) down. The team ranked last in this area last year, converting 27 percent of the time.

Gore, who turns 35 next month, continues to be one of the NFL’s best when his team needs a first down. On 10 attempts on third or fourth down last season, when the Colts needed two or fewer yards, he converted nine times.

Blount was successful five of nine tries for the Eagles (56 percent) and Murray converted two of his four chances, ceding most of the short-yardage work to Derrick Henry in Tennessee. Murray was 10 of 16 in 2016.

LB Christian Jones, who just signed with the Lions, said he doesn't know what role he'll have in the defense or what type of defense the Lions are going to run. When asked, then, why he signed with the Lions, he said it was because he felt it was a good opportunity and they have a good offense in place & he can help make the team better however he can. He also said he can "do a little bit of everything."

New Lions LB Devon Kennard, whose dad played in the NFL, said the best advice his dad has ever given him was the work ethic he instilled in him. Said for the most part, dad was dad, and the only memory he really had is when he won a Super Bowl with the Giants. And also said he once raced Emmitt Smith -- and Smith let him win.

Details of DeShawn Shead's one-year deal with the Lions. It's worth $3.35 million with $2 million in base salary ($500,000 of that fully guaranteed). He has a $1 million roster bonus due March 20 and has up to another $250,000 in roster bonuses for games he's on the 46-man roster ($15,625 per game). He has a workout bonus of $100,000. He can make up to $2 million more in incentive-based pay tied to playing time and interceptions. His Cap hit is $3,131,250.
