Detroit Lions - Team Notes

Rod Wood drops hints about Lions? 2018 schedule, talks future NFL Draft bids.
Rod Wood revealed some of the Lions? future plans during this week?s owners meetings.
Detroit Lions president Rod Wood met with the media on Monday at this week?s owners meeting and dropped a few minor news bits. First, he addressed why Detroit didn?t land the NFL Draft for future locations of the event.

His answer was odd and likely overly simplistic:
At NFL owner?s Meetings - #Lions team president Rod Wood says the main reason Detroit didn?t win a bid to host the NFL draft was a date conflict at Ford Field with a robotics convention. The conflict was for 2019 only, but 2020 is NFL?s 100-year anniversary so Wood said NFL likely had a spot in mind for that one already. He said they?re back in the mix for hosting 2021 and/or later.

Wood said the Lions will continue to bid for future drafts, but in the meantime, it looks like another Final Four event is possible in the near future:
Lions president Rod Wood said Detroit is bidding for a Final Four from 2023-26. Sounded pretty optimistic about chances of landing it.

Finally, Wood dropped some hints about the Lions? 2018 schedule, which is expected to be released in mid-April:
Rod Wood says his main request for the Lions? schedule this year is that their 2 west coast games (San Francisco, Arizona) be back to back in the second half of the season so the team can stay out west between games.

No word on the Lions' Thanksgiving opponent yet, but team president Rod Wood says he'd prefer it not be the Patriots because "that's going to be a big game no matter when it's played." Wants an NFC North team for that date. It's been Minnesota in the last two years.

Brett Whitefield of PFF helps break us down what to expect from the 2 newest Detroit Lions.

This week on the PODcast:
Luke Willson: A super discounted Eric Ebron or a stop-gap, low-level replacement?

How will this affect Michael Roberts and his development?

Brett breaks down what Willson can and cannot do, and projects what his role will be in Detroit.

What went wrong with Johnathan Hankins? Is there any chance the Lions could still grab him? The crew debates.

Brett and Co. discuss what they think the defensive line is going to look like in 2018.

Brett thinks the Lions are going 4-3 more often than people expect. Listen to hear why.

Is Devon Kennard a linebacker or a defensive lineman?

With free agency almost over, the gang reveals some of our draft crushes and wonders why there?s so much hesitation over Maurice Hurst?

The mailbag talks greatest movies ever, favorite March Madness moments and who is to blame for the Ebron divorce.

Quinn speaks for the first time on Ebron since his release.
Bob Quinn called releasing Eric Ebron strictly a financial decision. Said in trade talks most teams told him the number was too high.

Ndamukong Suh is headed to the Rams, will play the Lions at Ford Field.
Mlive

Ndamukong Suh going to the Rams could trigger a what-could-have-been scenario for the Lions as Suh will now line up next to Aaron Donald after Adam Schefter reported Suh will sign a 1-year deal with Los Angeles. Flashback to the No. 10 pick in 2014, when Suh was still in Detroit entering the final year of his deal (as was Nick Fairley). The Lions had a clear future need for Donald, a player who defensive coordinator Teryl Austin later admitted he lobbied for. Instead, Detroit took tight end Eric Ebron, who was released last week. So seeing Los Angeles potentially lining up what might have been Detroit's defensive interior in 2014 – a year where its run defense was one of the best in the league – could cause some pained reactions. Sure, they are different players now than they were then. Suh is a little bit older and at age 31 perhaps at the end of his prime. But Donald is the best defensive tackle in the game and better than he would have been as a rookie. And together, they could have been dominant in 2014. Plus, even if Suh had left after 2014 for Miami – like he ended up doing – the Lions would have still had an elite interior lineman who would have been then paired with Haloti Ngata instead of struggling to find the right combination for the past three seasons. Of course, some of this is conjecture because up until now it was an unknown how Suh and Donald would have fared playing alongside each other. The league could have seen this five years ago. Instead, a few months from now, the NFL is going to find out.
