Players are not big fans of the league implementing a targeting rule.
Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of backlash from players once it came to light that the NFL was working on a targeting rule for 2018. There were several Detroit Lions players?past and present?that took their complaints to Twitter:

On new targeting rule: teams only dress 46. 22 starters/3ST/back-up every spot basically. Safety goes down early with injury, 1 back-up nicked on ST, 1 back-up comes in and gets ejected with questionable targeting call-what?s D do now? No safeties left?! Effects all spots.

After thinking of new targeting rule, I get it. It?s adapt or die for the #NFL & this rule wasn?t made for present day ?player safety?. It was made for moms and dads and their kids? ?player safety? and the parents? peace of mind. #1 thing for parents=head health.
