Detroit Tigers Minor League Notes

A.L. Draft Recap: Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers need to be mentioned here, whether you agree or disagree with how they went about it this year. Detroit took six college pitchers in a row to start their draft, beginning with Florida right-hander, Jonathon Crawford. They also netted familiar names like Corey Knebel, and Kevin Ziomek. Strikeout artist, Austin Kubitza also went to Detroit 126th overall.

All of these players are pitchers capable of moving up the ladder at a rapid rate, something Detroit puts a premium on. But, you could also make the case that they drafted three future relievers in a row at the top of their draft class. There are two sides to that coin of course, but Crawford?s and Ziomek?s detractors will point to arm action, among other things, as reasons they may eventually wind up as relievers. The same can be said for Kubitza.

Tigers have signed 14th-round draft pick Ben Verlander and 27th-round pick Joe Mantiply.

Seriously, the worst part of the drafts is that there's very few players worth following in the system, and none were added in the draft.

Tigers sign 5th-rounder Buck Farmer for $225k. Georgia Tech RHP was one of top college SR, 88-92 to 95, solid slider & changeup.

The Tigers have agreed to terms with RHP Jonathon Crawford, the club’s 1st rd. selection in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

On top of Jonathon Crawford, Tigers have also signed Farmer, Drummond, Reininger, Coffman, Ficociello, A.Green, Verlander, McAlpine, Maciel, Pritcher, Powell, Kirkland, Mantiply, Sitz, Beck, Huber, Bailey and Johnson.

Tigers ink sandwich pick Corey Knebel for $1,433,400. Texas RHP, RP should move quick, 91-98 FB, hard curve, competes.
Corey Knebel wasn't an automatic sign, given he is a junior at Texas. But talking to him the other day, it was clear the price was right.

Tigers 7th-round pick Connor Harrell signed for under slot value of $168.7K. Price he pays for being a senior out of options.

Tigers sign 39th overall Draft pick Knebel.
DETROIT -- The Tigers added to their Draft signings by agreeing to terms with Corey Knebel, the 39th overall selection in the First-Year Player Draft two weeks ago.
The former University of Texas closer said on Draft night that he expected a deal to be completed shortly. It took a little longer than fellow Tigers first-round pick Jonathon Crawford, but Knebel is in the fold. Baseball America first reported the deal Monday.
Knebel was signed at slot, which Major League Baseball pegged at just over $1.4 million.
Tigers vice president of amateur scouting David Chadd said earlier this month that the team envisions Knebel as a starter. For the time being, though, he'll begin his pro career in the bullpen. Knebel is eventually expected to join Crawford and other Tigers Draft picks at short-season Class A Connecticut, but will begin working out in Lakeland, Fla.

Tigers today announced signing of four players from 2013 draft and have now agreed to terms with 23 of 41. List to follow.

Signings: RHP Corey Knebel (39th overall), CF Connor Harrell (7th RD),
SS Steven Negron (17th RD) and RHP Chase Edwards (24th RD).

Tigers sign seventh-round pick Harrell.
DETROIT -- The Tigers selected Vanderbilt center fielder Connor Harrell in the 31st round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, but couldn't get him to sign on the dotted line. However, they finally got their target when Harrell agreed to terms with the team on Tuesday after being picked in the seventh round of this year's Draft.
Harrell was the only position player Detroit picked in their first 10 selections. Although he manned center field throughout college, Tigers vice president of amateur scouting David Chadd said the team expects him to learn all three outfield positions and that he won't be an everyday center fielder.
Harrell joins three other players that agreed to terms with the Tigers on Tuesday. The group includes Texas closer Corey Knebel (39th overall), shortstop Steven Negron from Miami Dade Community College (17th round) and right-handed pitcher Chase Edwards from Hill Junior College (24th round).
The team has now signed 23 of their 41 selections and 10 of their first 15 picks from this year's Draft.

Class A West Michigan second baseman Devon Travis earned Midwest League All-Star Game MVP honors Tuesday, going 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs in the Eastern Division victory at Dayton.

The Tigers are promoting Drew VerHagen, their fourth-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, to the rotation at Double-A Erie, the SeaWolves announced Wednesday. The 22-year-old right-hander is 5-3 with a 2.81 ERA at Class A Lakeland.
