Detroit Tigers Minor League Notes

From Mark Anderson at TigsTown;

Devon Travis is a Fringe MLB regular.

Travis stats are eye opening. Why only fringe? Lack of tools? Age? Size?
Lacks bat speed and overall tools.*

McCann will debut in 2014.

What 6 VSL or DSL guys deserve to come stateside for 2014?
D.Leyba, W.Adames, A.Perez, J.Belisario, A.Castro, O.Castillo.

Who's been most impressive from this year's draft?
Crawford and Knebel.

Is Knebel viably in Detroit next year?
Depends on the role...in the BP, there's a chance.

Did Saupold impress anyone?
Not really...middle reliever or swingman type; nothing big.

What do you foresee for Moya in 2014?
Lots of ups and downs; exactly what should always be expected for him.

Fields anything more than a 4th OFer?
That's all I see...Don't think the hit translates.

What arm surprised you most this year? If any...
Lobstein.

Endrys Briceno..."wish sandwich" or actual hope ?
Still love the overall package...extreme risk.

Thoughts on Elys Escobar or Hector Martinez?
Escobar = glove first w/ strength; Martinez = bat first, ends up at 2B/3B.

Who would be the Tigers top prospect now that Castellanos is in the majors?
Castellanos still qualifies...Crawford is #2.

Will there be a better spot start option ready to pluck next year than Alvarez? (Not that he was horrible).
Maybe VerHagen.

Is this fair?; Nick C-(slow,can only play LF or DH, ceiling is .290 with 25 HR).
Generally, yes. BA ceiling might be higher.

Will steven moya assume RF in 2015 when tori hunter departs?
Doubtful.

Tigers announce Minors Player, Pitcher of year.
DETROIT -- The Tigers on Saturday announced that second baseman Devon Travis and left-hander Jose Alvarez were named the organization's Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year.

Travis, who spent the season split between Class A West Michigan and Class A Advanced Lakeland, batted .351 with 16 home runs and 76 RBIs in 132 games. The 22-year-old, who was a 13th-round pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Florida State, was selected for the Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star teams.

The Tigers have chosen Travis to be one of their five representatives in the Arizona Fall League and he will begin play with the Mesa Solar Sox on Oct. 8.

Alvarez, who is now in Detroit's bullpen, went 8-6 with 115 strikeouts in 128 2/3 innings over 20 starts with Triple-A Toledo. Among International League starters, Alvarez finished second in WHIP (1.08) and fourth in ERA (2.80).

Just got confirmation from the Tigers on the hiring of Larry Parrish as the manager of the Toledo Mud Hens.

With Larry Parrish going to Toledo, there's now a managerial opening at West Michigan. Hearing it's likely to be filled from within organization.

Mud Hens welcome Parrish for third stint as manager.
DETROIT -- On Wednesday, Triple-A Toledo announced Larry Parrish will make his third stint as a manager of the Mud Hens.
Parrish, the Hens' all-time leader in managerial wins, was named the International League's Manager of the Year in 2005 as he led Toledo to back-to-back championships in '05 and '06. In 1999, Parrish replaced Buddy Bell as the manager of the Tigers and went 69-92 in his lone season.

"He's terrific. I think the world of Larry Parrish," manager Jim Leyland said. "I think he's an outstanding baseball manager, a great evaluator. I think he's outstanding baseball guy and a great guy. I really enjoy being around him."

Parrish, a two-time Major League All-Star, made his first stint with the Mud Hens in 1994 before returning in 2003 for seven years, missing the '07 season. He replaces Phil Nevin, who parted ways with the organization on Sept. 1.

Parrish left Toledo after the 2010 season to take a job as the Atlanta Braves' hitting coach, a position he held for a year. He returned to the Tigers' organization this year and managed at low Class A West Michigan, but his value and his temperament best fit Triple-A and its combination of older prospects and veterans.

"It makes it easier to go to a place where you are familiar with things like what restaurants to eat at and what golf courses to play," Parrish told the Toledo Blade.

The Tigers also promoted Toledo's pitching coach A.J. Sager to the team's roving pitching coordinator, while athletic trainer Matt Rankin joins the Tigers as an assistant athletic trainer. Al Nipper, who was the team's roving coordinator for the past two years, will become the Mud Hens' pitching coach for the 2014 season.

Worth noting;
The Tigers confirmed the signings of Blaine Hardy and Justin Miller to Minor League contracts, first reported by Baseball America.

Hardy enjoyed newfound success as a starter at Triple-A Toledo down the stretch this season, tossing a complete-game one-hitter in August. He went 6-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 14 appearances for the Mud Hens.

The 26-year-old Miller went 1-1 with a 7.67 ERA in the Rangers farm system before being released in August.
