Detroit Tigers Minor League Notes

Ex-Tigers minor leaguers,

Since being traded, Danry Vasquez is hitting .267/.274/.333.

After hitting .225/.275/.284, Rob Brantly was demoted to AAA last week. He's hitting .143/.143/.143 in 21 AAA AB.

Nick Castellanos is back in the lineup for Toledo for the first time since being hit by a pitch Saturday.

Tigers Nick Castellanos goes yard in his first AB tonight, giving him 14 bombs on the year, all as one of the youngest players in AAA.

Destined for the Tigers roster on September 1st...... or sooner.

Jair Jurrjens vs Freddy Garcia packed Fifth Third Field yesterday. Jair probably sees two more starts for Toledo, then enters an unknown crossroad in his career. Toledo Mud Hens may be his final curtain-call.

Nick Castellanos, Work in Progress in Left Field.
Just like it was this spring, defense from Castellanos is a work in progress. Some moments he shows signs of growth, other moments it?s a Delmon Young-like adventure for which no one is certain will ever get better.

On Monday night, he had no issues recording three put outs in the game, though none of the plays required more than 8 or 10 easy steps in any direction. He was able to read the ball off the bat, albeit a split second later than he realistically needs to for balls he?ll have to move for.

Scouts and observers that have watched him multiple times this season have remarked that he?ll show moments where he appears to be figuring it out, and then make a blunder so porous it?d make them wonder if it was his first time standing in left field if they didn?t know any better.

The question that gets asked time and time again by Tigers fans; could Castellanos play defense in the majors right now?

The simple answer; sure. Just don?t expect it to be much better than bad. He?s not a great athlete, doesn?t move particularly well in space, and still doesn?t get good reads and take the correct first step. His arm strength is solid, at least. In other words, he?s not bad enough that the Tigers wouldn?t put him out there this season, but he?s not good enough that it won?t make people wonder why they did.

After looking at the New York-Penn League position players in Part 1 of this series, I take a step back and provide my scouting notes on many of the arms on display in last week?s All-Star contest. Scouting arms in an exhibition setting can be difficult as most pitchers amp up and show max stuff in a one-inning burst, but there is still valuable information to be obtained.

Looks every bit the part of a first rounder; strong durable frame despite being just 6-foot-1; attacked with everything; FB sat 93-94; had 96-98 when he wanted/needed it; FB was explosive and nearly unhittable; SL 85-88 and best secondary pitch of the night; SL was very sharp with incredibly hard two-plane break; two easy plus pitches that both flashed in 7 range; didn?t show CH; a little effort to delivery; arm slot and landing foot were inconsistent; control was spotty; mid-rotation potential but FB-SL will play in late innings as backup.
