Omar Infante's return to Detroit Tigers lineup could be delayed by lingering ankle injury.

Infante recovering slowly from sprained ankle.
DETROIT -- When Omar Infante was placed on the 15-day disabled list, it was expected that he would need only a few extra days to heal his sprained left ankle before returning after the All-Star break.
However, progress has been slow, and it may throw a wrench into an immediate return after the All-Star break.
"He's going to Orlando for the break and he's supposed to play for [Class A] Lakeland as soon as he can," manager Jim Leyland said. "But I don't know how fast that's going to happen."
Infante hit off a tee in the batting cages Saturday and was planning to try running on his ankle Sunday.
"Progress is slow," Infante said. "I feel good, but it's still slow. I have to continue treatment, continue running. I'll have to get ready for the opening day [after the All-Star break] or try to go to Chicago [on July 22]."
Infante sustained the injury on a hard slide by the Blue Jays' Colby Rasmus on July 3. Hernan Perez and Ramon Santiago have split time at second base in Infante's absence.

Scherzer would relish All-Star Game start.
DETROIT -- While Max Scherzer may be a little disappointed after his first loss Saturday, he's still thrilled about traveling to New York this week for the All-Star Game.

"That's going to be fun," Scherzer said. "That's going to be a blast, especially as my first one. You always work hard to put yourself in the position to be there. Finally it's happened for me and I can't wait to go to New York."

Along with his 13-1 record, Scherzer owns a 3.19 ERA and entered Sunday second in the American League with a 0.98 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) and 152 strikeouts. Those statistics put him in consideration to start the All-Star Game for the American League on Tuesday.

"It would mean a lot," Scherzer said. "I just know how many great pitchers there are in the game and the other pitchers who are on top of their game right now and how well they are pitching. If I get the nod over those guys, it's a real nice moment."

Scherzer took a comebacker to his left wrist in the second inning Saturday and was wearing an ice pack before Sunday's game. X-rays came back negative.

Despite being unable to initially squeeze his hand and some concern from manager Jim Leyland, Scherzer says he can't imagine it being a problem for him going forward.
"Just one of those things you have to treat," Scherzer said. "I got hit by a baseball."

Tigers tab Anibal to start second-half opener.
DETROIT -- Manager Jim Leyland and his coaching staff have constantly been monitoring the Tigers' starting pitchers' workload this season. With that in mind, the second-half rotation was set up to provide each pitcher with at least an extra day of rest.

Anibal Sanchez will open for the Tigers after the All-Star break against the Royals on Friday, with Justin Verlander and Doug Fister pitching on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
"Sanchez should be pretty fresh," Leyland said. "They will all get some extra time now."

Max Scherzer will follow in Monday's game against the White Sox, while Rick Porcello is scheduled to take the mound Tuesday to round out the starting rotation.

"I feel good," Sanchez said after his last start. "For me the location wasn't working like I'm used to doing. I think I need to work a little bit and do something with it. Right now, it is the end of the first half and the second half is coming now, and I just need to work on it."

Tigers manager Leyland on Verlander becoming too much of a 'pitcher' and not using his 'stuff' enough:
"I have my own personal opinion, which is simple. I?ll put it very simple for you. I think that Justin Verlander is a ?stuff? guy. That?s what he is. I think that, yes, you?re trying to learn how to become better as a pitcher, but you can?t take it so far that you?re going to be more of a pitch-pitcher type guy, than a stuff guy. Because he?s a stuff guy. That?s my opinion.
"Some guys have to be more pitchers, because they have a lot less stuff.
"That?s not a criticism. I think he?s just trying to figure out how to become better, and sometimes that?s not always the way to go. It?s figuring out how to become better, but not necessarily ? you gotta remember your stuff.
"I think the stuff is there, without question. The stuff is there."

Tigers manager Jim Leyland on balancing quad, pitch count in Verlander's no-hit bid:
"(Pitching coach Jeff) Jonesy told me in the sixth. It?s one of those like, well, it?s there. I don?t know if that?s one of those ?Take me out, but don?t take me out.? That?s why you sit in this chair. That?s why you?ve gotta make decisions, and get questioned by a lot of people. And that?s OK. That?s why you?re in this chair. If you can?t handle that, you shouldn?t be in this chair. But it was a tough one, because I can?t take any chance. But after the seventh for sure, and after the hit ? to be honest with you, I?d have probably let him try it. I probably would have let him try to get it. Unless it was something where it became worse. I?d have given him a shot. "And it wasn?t just because of the fans. I don?t manage like that, to be honest with you. I don?t worry about that. I?ve got a whole second half to play with premier pitcher at stake. You can?t get carried away with that stuff.
You get an onslaught of criticism, immediate boos and stuff, but for the most part, after you guys write the story, most people understand the situation."
