Already sporting the terrific late-game duo of Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances, the Yankees trade for Reds closer Aroldis Chapman in return for four prospects: Caleb Cotham, Rookie Davis, Eric Jagielo and Tony Renda. The Bronx Bombers make the trade even though Chapman is currently under investigation for a domestic violence incident that could result in an extensive suspension.

2020: The Padres continue to be the busiest team this off-season, as two days after landing P Blake Snell, they reportedly pull off another deal for a front-line pitcher, Yu Darvish, acquired from the Cubs alongside C Victor Caratini in return for P Zach Davies and four prospects. The Padres are also said to have come to an agreement with Korean infielder Ha-seong Kim, who has been made available via the Posting system. These latest two deals are still awaiting confirmation, but they underline that the Friars are serious about making a title run this coming season.

Al Kaline’s Rude Introduction to the Detroit Tigers. 11 minutes.
ByronCopley

Al Kaline, first-ballot Hall of Fame right fielder for the Detroit Tigers, whose career spanned 22 seasons from 1953 to 1974, was rejected, ostracized, and ridiculed by many teammates during his rookie season — primarily because the core of veteran outfielders perhaps knew that their days as Detroit Tigers were dwindling, and this rookie phenom bonus baby was accelerating the timeline.
Who were these players who resented Kaline’s presence? That what this podcast reveals.

We are saddened by the passing of former Tigers outfielder Charlie Maxwell and share our condolences with his family and loved ones. A native of Paw Paw, Michigan, Maxwell played 8 seasons in Detroit, was a two-time All-Star and at 97 years old, was our Tigers oldest living alum.

December 29 in Tigers and mlb history:

1878: The professional Baseball League of Cuba begins play in Havana, making the Cuban Winter League the world's second oldest professional baseball organization, trailing North America's National League in seniority by only two seasons. Havana wins the first game, 21 - 20, over Almendares in a contest featuring ten men to a side (the extra position was "right short"). The inaugural Cuban championship consists of only three clubs - Havana, Matanzas, Almendares - and Havana wins the trophy with a 4-0-1 record behind the leadership of manager and captain Steve Bellan.

1917: The Philadelphia Phillies keep swapping with the Chicago Cubs, this month sending OF Dode Paskert, a seven-year veteran, to Chicago for slugger Cy Williams. Williams will flourish in the Baker Bowl, and will hit 222 home runs for the Phillies over the next 13 years. Paskert will not enjoy the same success at Wrigley Field.

1921: The Detroit Tigers selected George Cutshaw off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1932: Shanty Hogan, who started his career with the Boston Braves, is purchased by the Braves after five years as the regular catcher for the New York Giants. Boston pays $25,000 for Hogan, who will finish his career with a .295 batting average.

1933: New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert refuses to release Babe Ruth from his contract, thus preventing him from becoming the manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Ruth will never receive a chance to manage a major league team.

1938: Al Simmons moves to the National League when the Boston Bees buy him for $3,000 from the Washington Senators.

1949: The Detroit Tigers signed Charlie Keller as a free agent.

1969: The New York Times reports that former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Curt Flood will sue Major League Baseball over the reserve clause, which perpetually binds players to their teams. Flood is objecting to being traded from the Cardinals to the Philadelphia Phillies without his consent.

1977: Melissa Ludtke, female Sports Illustrated sports writer, files suit against Major League Baseball, the Yankees and New York City officials for denying her access to the locker room to interview players during the 1977 World Series.

1983: The Detroit Tigers signed Milt Wilcox as a free agent.

1987: The Detroit Tigers signed Jack Morris as a free agent.

1998: The Detroit Tigers signed Luis Pineda as a free agent.

2017: Wade Davis reportedly agrees to the biggest deal ever offered a relief pitcher as he signs with the Rockies for $52 million over three years. This works out to an annual salary of $17.3 million, besting the $17.2 million given by the Yankees to Aroldis Chapman last year.

2020: The Detroit Tigers signed Locke St. John as a free agent.

Hi Everyone. Last year on this date December 29, I posted how we passed 3 million views on the Tigers Team Notes Thread.

I find this amazing for a Detroit Sports Team based theme and I want to thank everyone who reads this thread daily. All the posters from the site, and those of you who come by regularly to read all the Tigers news.

I waited for today December 29 to mention all this, so it could be celebrated today, on the 18 year anniversary of when I began this long running thread back on the old espn forums in 2006.

According to Freep's Evan Petzold on MLB Network Radio, Gio Urshela played a big factor in Gleyber Torres signing with the Tigers. Torres and Urshela are close friends and when asked about playing for the Tigers, Urshela had great things to say about it.

Evan also says there is still a little bit of a gap in value between the Tigers and Bregman’s camp. He also says the Tigers are prioritizing Bregman a lot more than they were at the beginning of the offseason. Harris is in for a 5 year contract but not a 6 year.

MLB executive's Tarik Skubal contract prediction will make Tigers fans sick.
At this projected price tag, it feels like a foregone conclusion the beloved left-hander will depart in free agency after the 2026 season.
