Jurrjens back with Tigers on Minors deal.
Jair Jurrjens is back in the Tigers organization.
The right-hander, who last pitched for the Orioles this season, was signed to a Triple-A contract on Wednesday and will report to Toledo on Friday.
Jurrjens, 27, made his Major League debut with the Tigers in 2007, when he went 3-1 with a 4.70 ERA in seven games (all starts).
"He kind of came on the scene pretty good," manager Jim Leyland said. "Pretty calm, pretty collected, made a good impression. Evidently, he's had a lot of health issues since we've had him."
Jurrjens was traded to the Braves, along with Gorkys Hernandez, in October 2007 for Edgar Renteria. Jurrjens spent five seasons with the Braves, with whom he went 50-36 with a 3.58 ERA. He had double-digit win totals in 2008, '09 and '11 and an ERA under 3.00 in two of those seasons.
In 2010, he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee for a torn meniscus, and the same knee bothered him again in 2011 after beginning the season on the disabled list.
Jurrjens was signed as a Minor League free agent by the Orioles in February to compete for a rotation spot, but he pitched in just two games for Baltimore, allowing four earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. In 16 starts for Baltimore's Triple-A Norfolk club, he went 6-6 with a 4.18 ERA. Jurrjens was designated for assignment on July 12 and granted free agency last Thursday.
He joins former Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman in Toledo. Both pitched in the Tigers rotation in 2007. Bonderman signed as a Minor League free agent on July 14 after being designated for assignment by the Mariners.

Ex #Tigers SP Jeremy Bonderman had another scoreless inning today for MudHens.
Relief might be his niche: 4 G, 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 K's.

Miggy sits out second straight game.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera was out of the Detroit lineup for the second straight day Wednesday to nurse a sore left hip flexor.
After saying Tuesday night this would most likely be the case, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Cabrera was feeling better on Wednesday, but nothing more.
Leyland does not expect Cabrera's nagging injury to warrant a trip to the disabled list.

Perez making a splash with his bat.
It looked for a while like rookie callup Hernan Perez would make the biggest impact during this big league stint with his glove. Then he hit an inside-the-park home run.

Well, technically it was a triple and an error. But Perez will take it. It would have been the young infielder's first home run, but instead he'll settle for his first triple.
"When I saw [third-base coach Tom Brookens] sending me home, I said, 'I have to get there however I can,'" Perez said.

During the sixth inning of Tuesday night's 6-2 victory, Perez laced a line drive into the left-center-field gap and White Sox left fielder Dayan Viciedo misplayed it badly, allowing Perez to come around to score. On a day in which he made some shining plays in the field, his race around the bases stood out.

"Usually when I'm pitching, I don't show much emotion, but I was pretty pumped for him," starting pitcher Rick Porcello said. "An inside-the-parker -- or a triple. That was awesome for him. I was happy to see it. He swung the bat well and played great defense. He had a heck of a game."

With Omar Infante on the disabled list, Perez has gotten the at-bats this week against Chicago's left-handed starters. He was batting .300 with 28 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 35 RBIs in 86 games with Double-A Erie this year.

"He's got great instincts," Porcello said. "He breaks to the ball real quick. A lot of those balls he was making plays on are base hits normally, and he just did a heck of a job. He's quick, he's got a great arm, which allows him to make some tough throws. He's been doing a great job while Omar's been out."

Worth noting

Infante was set to play for Class A West Michigan on Wednesday evening, and Leyland said he would be the designated hitter in the Whitecaps lineup.
Infante has been on the DL since July 4 with a sprained left ankle. The Tigers are hopeful he can play second base for the Whitecaps on Thursday and be available to join the big league club for the weekend series against the Phillies.
Reliever Darin Downs traveled with Infante to West Michigan, and he will make his first rehab appearance since being placed on the DL on July 7 (left shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis) when he throws on Thursday.

FOX Sports Detroit PLUS will provide live coverage of batting practice on Saturday, before the game against the Phillies. It will be the first Tigers broadcast this year to feature the special coverage.
"Fans normally don't see what the Tigers players go through on a daily basis before a game," Greg Hammaren, senior vice president and general manager of FOX Sports Detroit, said in a statement. "Our show will bring the ballpark to fans with coverage of Tigers players' batting practice routines and show the opponent's BP during the show."
Coverage will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET, with broadcasters John Keating and Craig Monroe providing commentary and answering questions from Twitter using the #TigersBP hashtag. They will do the same on Aug. 3, when the Tigers play the White Sox.
