Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

V-Mart could return to catching this weekend.
DETROIT -- Before Wednesday's game against the Twins, Victor Martinez was sitting behind home plate in his catcher's gear, practicing his throws to second base. He hasn't played the position since 2011, but may get an opportunity this weekend against the Mets.

"I'm contemplating -- contemplating only -- catching him a game in New York," manager Jim Leyland said.

Detroit will head to Citi Field to face the Mets beginning on Friday, and the Tigers won't have the luxury of a designated hitter, because they will be playing in a National League park. Instead of being relegated to a pinch-hitting role, Martinez could find some playing time at catcher.

Martinez says he always prepares to play the position in case of emergencies and would be happy to be back there this weekend.

"That's the position I came up to the big leagues in," Martinez said. "I still enjoy it. Unfortunately, I can't do it like I used to do it everyday, but it's always going to be fun."

Pena joins Tigers' list of injured catchers.
DETROIT -- The Tigers were down to one healthy full-time catcher on Wednesday night against the Twins after Brayan Pena, Detroit's starter for the past week and a half with Alex Avila on the disabled list, fouled a ball off his right foot during Tuesday's game.

Pena fouled a Glen Perkins pitch off his back foot in the ninth inning and jammed his big toe. Pena stayed in the game and singled, but was clearly hobbling all the way to first base. Bryan Holaday pinch-ran for him.

The toe felt better Wednesday morning, but still not great.
"I woke up and I couldn't move my toe," Pena said. "I was kind of scared last night, because I couldn't even move it. I couldn't even land [on] my toes and I didn't want to hurt my team, especially in that situation."
Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Pena is considered day to day.

With Avila on the seven-day concussion disabled list, Holaday started at catcher on Wednesday night. Victor Martinez, meanwhile, donned his old catching gear and crouched behind the plate for some early work on Wednesday afternoon before the Tigers took batting practice.

Martinez training for possible action behind the plate this weekend against the Mets, but Leyland said he could be a backup option on Wednesday if Holaday were injured.

Pena, however, gave every indication he could catch in a pinch.
"If he needs me tonight, I'll be ready," Pena said.

August 22 in Tigers and mlb history:

1905 - Umpire John Sheridan forfeits a game to Washington in the 11th when the Tigers refuse to resume play after a lengthy dispute. Washington is ahead 2 - 1 at the time of the forfeiture.

1915: In the 2nd inning of game one of a doubleheader versus Detroit, the crowd sees the Senators score a run with no times at bat, the only time it's ever happened. Chick Gandil and Merito Acosta walk; Rip Williams sacrifices, and George McBride hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Gandil, and the Tigers catch Acosta off second base when OF Bobby Veach throws to Ossie Vitt. Washington's Walter Johnson goes on to win and snap the Tigers' 9-game win streak.

1933 - Hank Greenberg has the first of 35 multi-home run games. He also gets the first of his six career walk-off home runs.

1934 Rudy York makes his big league debut with the Tigers.

1946 - Clubs approve a change to a 168-game schedule, but they will rescind the decision at another meeting on September 16. Television is first recognized, with clubs given rights to their own games. Players jumping to outlaw leagues will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement for five years.

1972 - The Tigers and A’s have another brawl, setting up bad blood in that year’s ALCS showdown between them.

1978 - Ron LeFlore swipes his 27th consecutive base as Detroit beats the Twins 7 - 3. He began the streak on July 16.

1997: The Tigers pound the Brewers 16 - 1, with the aid of 23 hits and an 11-run 7th inning. Bobby Higginson gets five hits for Detroit, while Travis Fryman and Tony Clark drive in four runs apiece.

2011: Detroit's Justin Verlander continues his dominance on the mound, earning his major league-leading 19th win in the Tigers' 5 - 2 victory over the Rays. It is his 7th consecutive winning start. Alex Avila, hitting .424 in August, hits a two-run homer off Jeff Niemann in the 2nd to send the Bengals on their way.

Tigers 7 - Twins 1 ? Scoreless after six, and then the Twins snuck on top. But Torii Hunter fought two off with 2 strikes, 2 outs, then slashed a 2-run double (that?s RF Chris Herrmann whiffing), giving Detroit their first lead in this series and their first extra-base hit off Kevin Correia. After a pass to Miggy, Prince Fielder whiffed against a bullpen lefty, but the pitch got so far away from Ryan Doumit that Hunter scored from 2nd, and then V-Mart doubled in another. It all began with 2 away and none aboard, on a ?harmless? single by 3rd-string catcher Bryan Holaday. Anibal Sanchez hurled zeroes to the 7th, but a 2-out walk to Pedro Florimon (no!), a steal, and Brian Dozier?s single through the abdicated box put Correia briefly in the driver?s seat. Drew Smyly notched 3 quick outs for his 5th win, without a loss.
?Eight runs in the last 7 starts for Sanchez. He?s fallen from the spotlight due to some time away, but he began the evening 8th in AL pitchers? WAR, 2nd in SO/9 and #1 in ERA+.
?Cabrera piled on with a 3-run double in the 8th, the inning prolonged by Dozier?s error.
?Correia?s faced Detroit 5 times since 2011, all quality starts.
?Holaday has been stolen blind, 12 SB and 1 CS in just 8 games.
