Detroit Tigers Team Notes

September 30 in Tigers history :

1907: An overflow crowd lines the outfield at Philadelphia's Columbia Park for the showdown doubleheader between the A's and Tigers. In the first game, the home team gets off to a 7 - 1 lead against 25-game winner Bill Donovan. But Rube Waddell, who relieves in the 2nd, fails to hold the lead. A 2-run home run by Ty Cobb ties it 8 - 8 in the 9th. Both teams score once in the 11th; an umpire's ruling costs Philadelphia the game in the 14th: Harry David hits a long fly into the crowd in left-centerfield, ordinarily a ground-rule double. As Tiger CF Sam Crawford goes to the crowd's edge, a policeman stands up and moves, either to interfere or to get out of the way. Home plate umpire Silk O'Loughlin says there is no interference, then reverses his ruling when base umpire Tom Connolly offers a different opinion. When play resumes, the Athletics' Danny Murphy hits a long single that would have scored Davis. The game is called because of darkness in the 17th, a 9 - 9 tie. The second game is never played. The Tigers, in first place, leave for Washington where they will win 4. They will finish 1 1/2 games in front.

1916: In his 153rd game, Tiger 3B Ossie Vitt raises his season total chances to 615, a mark that will stand for 21 years.

1917: Detroit's future Hall of Fame OF Sam Crawford retires from major league baseball at 37. In addition to his career-record 312 three-base hits, he has hit 50 inside-the-park home runs among his 2961 career hits. He will play in the Pacific Coast League for several more years.

1944: Hal Newhouser wins his 29th as Detroit whips Washington 7 - 3.

1945: Hank Greenberg hits a pennant-winning grand slam on the final day of the season. The Tiger left fielder's ninth-inning bases-full homer beats the Browns, 6 - 3 clinching the American League flag for Detroit over the second-place Senators.

1951: The Tigers drive over the slumping Tribe 2 - 1 behind Virgil Trucks' 13th win of the year.

1967: Boston beats the Twins, 6 - 4, to tie Minnesota for first place. Carl Yastrzemski's 3-run home run gives him the American League-lead with 44, but Harmon Killebrew answers with his 44th for the losers. Meanwhile, Detroit, which had games rained out on the 28th and 29th, plays two with the Angels. Mickey Lolich wins the opener, 5 - 0, his 3rd straight shutout, and Detroit takes a seemingly safe 6 - 2 lead into the 8th inning of the nitecap. The Angels then bat around, scoring six runs, to hand Detroit a devastating 8 - 6 loss. Detroit now trails Minnesota and Boston by a half-game.

1972: The Tigers take their 3rd in a row from Milwaukee as John Hiller throws a 5-hitter. Aurelio Rodriguez's 3-run home run is the margin in the 5 - 1 win. The Tigers now return home to face the Red Sox in a 3-game series that will determine which team wins the East.

2010-2011 Reverse Engineered Elias Rankings.
from mlbtraderumors

Once the regular season ended, the Elias Sports Bureau took all players over the 2010-11 period, divided them into five groups for each league, and ranked them based on various statistics. Each player was labeled a Type A, B, or none. Those designations and the possible accompanying arbitration offers determine draft pick compensation (click here for a refresher). Draft pick compensation may change with the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, though the old rules are expected to stay in place for the upcoming offseason and 2012 draft.

Eddie Bajek has reverse-engineered the Elias rankings, and he's providing that information exclusively at MLB Trade Rumors. Here's a look at his 2010-11 projections, to tide you over until the official ones come out from Elias. There are a lot of moving parts in reverse-engineering the Elias rankings, so these are subject to change if we find errors. Our last set of Elias projections is here, in case you want to see what changed during the season's final week.

This was an interesting article I ran across this morning that I thought was an exceptional read. To steal a quote from the article that I think stands out at least to me was this.

From Mr Ilitch

On the Tigers' ability to remain long-term contenders: "I'm challenged to keep it there like the Yankees and the Red Sox. I haven't totally zeroed in on our payroll yet. What I'm still trying to figure out is what we need for next year. I want to be in a position to make one or two additions, and generally, they're pretty big additions."

Just adds some great news to an already exciting upcoming playoff run.
