Kinsler, Vizquel try to one-up each other in practice.
The Tigers did not have a chance to do any infield work at Fenway Park on Friday due to the weather. Judging by the forecast, they might not be able to until Sunday. By then, Omar Vizquel might be getting antsy.

Every so often, Vizquel takes ground balls in the infield with Tigers players, including second baseman Ian Kinsler. When they do, Kinsler and Vizquel tend to have fun with it, trying acrobatic flips and catches an in effort to one-up each other.

For Vizquel, it's a way to stay connected with the infielders he coaches. For Kinsler, it's a way to live out a childhood memory.

"I remember him doing that with Robbie Alomar," Kinsler said, referring to the days Vizquel and Alomar were teammates in Cleveland. "That's the one thing I think about every time I do that with him."

They were two of the best defensive players in the game at the time, and they were in their primes. Now, Vizquel is 47.

"To be honest with you, I never think about the age," Kinsler said. "I just think about what he can do."

Regardless of job, baserunning key for Ausmus.
Brad Ausmus' baserunning emphasis isn't team-specific.
One reason behind the Red Sox's revival last season and their win over the Tigers in the American League Championship Series was an emphasis on baserunning. The Tigers returned to Fenway Park on Friday leading the AL in stolen bases and vastly improved in overall baserunning metrics behind new manager Brad Ausmus.

Ausmus, coincidentally, interviewed for the Red Sox job after the 2012 season before Boston hired its former pitching coach, John Farrell. The Red Sox probably would've had some of the same philosophies under Ausmus, who noted that his emphasis on baserunning isn't team-specific.

Asked if he knew right away when he was hired that he'd emphasize baserunning, Ausmus said, "It wouldn't have mattered what job I got. Running the bases would've been important."

Nor did the roster makeup matter. Without Rajai Davis and Ian Kinsler, the Tigers would be down to less than half the stolen bases, but they'd still be trying to take the extra base. It's a similar philosophy Jim Leyland talked about last year.

Hanrahan long-tossing to build arm strength.

Joel Hanrahan has been slowed down a bit in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. The recently signed reliever has resumed long-tossing in Lakeland, Fla., to strengthen his arm after he was shut down early from a bullpen session.

"He did it one day and then we shut him down," Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Friday. "The second session, he was having issues as well."
Rand did not characterize the move as a setback. It's not any sort of injury or soreness, he said, but a lack of strength.
"We're taking the approach that we need to build up arm strength on him, and he's been doing a lot better," Rand said.

Hanrahan will be evaluated again in a week, so he won't face hitters again until next weekend at the earliest. What that means for his timetable to join Detroit remains to be seen. Neither Hanrahan nor the Tigers put a firm date on that, but the hope has been that he could be ready at some point in June.

May 17 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903 - Cool Papa Bell is born in Starkville, Mississippi. Bell will enjoy a successful career in the Negro Leagues from 1922 to 1946. An outfielderwith blazing speed and the first Mexican League Triple Crown winner, Bell will be selected to the Hall of Fame in 1974.

1925 - At League Park, Tris Speaker of the Cleveland Indians collects his 3,000th hit off Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators.

1934 Rogers Hornsby hits his 300th career home run. He?s the first National Leaguer to do so, and third overall, behind Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

1945 - For the fourth time in four days, every American League game is postponed because of rain.

1961 - Roger Maris hits his first home run of the season at Yankee Stadium (and fourth overall) on his way to a major league season-record 61.

1970 - During a 7 - 6 Atlanta loss to Cincinnati in the second game of a doubleheader, Hank Aaron collects his 3,000th career hit and his 500th home run. Aaron, the ninth man to amass 3,000 hits, is the first to also have 500 home runs.

1998 - David Wells pitches the 13th perfect game in modern major league history as the Yankees beat Minnesota, 4 - 0. Wells, whose "perfecto" is the first by a Yankees pitcher since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series, also sets anAmerican League record by retiring 37 batters in a row, dating back to his start on May 12th against Kansas City.

2000 Cal Ripken passes up Hank Aaron by grounding into his 329th double play, the new record. Ripken will retire with 350 GIDP, which is still the record.

2001: Ike Brown dies from cancer in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 59. A popular member of the Detroit Tigers for six seasons, Brown was one of the last Negro League players still active in the majors during the 1970s, and the last to make his major league debut. The versatile Brown played every infield and outfield position but center field during his Tigers stint.

2011: Harmon Killebrew, one of the great sluggers of the 1960s with 573 career home runs, passes away from cancer at 74 in Scottsdale, AZ. The gentle and universally-like "Killer", who spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Twins, was the 1969 AL MVP and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984.

Why the Tigers won on Friday night.
from the freep

Tigers 1 - Red Sox 0 – Detroit scored in their first at-bats, and Max Scherzer steered that lead through narrow straits in the 6th inning. Two on, no outs, count full on Grady Sizemore, Max induced a 4-6-3 DP. Big Papi got a wide berth, and Mike Napoli took strike three to end the threat, and maybe Scherzer’s night, at 103 pitches. But no, he went back for the 7th. A leadoff hit brought a familiar queasy feeling. Evan Reed pushed that tying run to second on a balk, then clipped Xander Bogaerts. But he punched out Jackie Bradley, and when A.J. Pierzynski was announced, the lefty Ian Krol came in and rolled Detroit’s third double play. Joba Chamberlain and Joe Nathan brought it home with six straight outs, the closer fanning Ortiz before sealing Scherzer’s 6th straight winning start.

If you thought a lone 1st-inning run could never stand all night in Fenway, you’re not far off. By my check, the last time was April 29, 1990: Jose Canseco’s single scored Rickey Henderson, and Dave Stewart bested Roger Clemens for his 5th straight win that month, en route to his 4th straight 20-win season. They’d meet again that fall.

Scherzer allowed 3 hits in his 6 scoreless innings. Despite his stellar strikeout rate (2nd-best of active starters with 500 IP), he’s never flirted with a no-hitter, or gone more than six innings on just one hit. His 2-hit outings include two of 8 IP and two more of 7+.
Napoli walked in his first two trips, nine total pitches. Maybe some history with Max? Nope — a single and a walk in 18 prior meetings.
How long since Detroit won 1-0 in Fenway? Their last two both beat Reggie Cleveland.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 112: Cobb and Gehringer, a list of two.

Topics:
Tigers are steamrolling the AL Central.
They may be getting above average defense, but the Tigers are getting little (Danny Worth) to no (Andrew Romine) offense from the shortstop position. Is the time to sign Stephen drew nigh?
Brooming the Birds in Baltimore!
Miguel Cabrera does it again...and again, and again.
Purpose pitch war with the Orioles results in a Bud Norris ejection and many, many words from Torii Hunter.
An umpire touches Hunter during the Norris altercation, gets off without being disciplined by MLB. Do you think Hunter would have gotten off so easy if the situation had been reversed?
On May 14, a Victor Martinez steal of second was the Tigers' 35th of the season, equaling their season total for 2013.
A Tigers - Red Sox ALCS rematch is on tap. Think anyone is looking for a little revenge?
Victor Martinez, Ty Cobb and Charlie Gehringer may have something in common.
