June 23 in Tigers history:

1915: For the 5th time this month, and 6th time this year, Ty Cobb steals home, doing it in a 4 - 2 Tiger win over the St. Louis Browns. Cobb scores another run when Sam Crawford hits back to Browns P Grover Lowdermilk, who somersaults after catching the grounder and sits on the mound holding the ball. Cobb scores all the way from second base on the play.

1927: With the help of a 3rd-inning triple play, the Tigers down the White Sox, 6 - 5, in 11 innings. Ted Lyons loses again, to reliever Earl Whitehill.

1939 - Hank Greenberg collects his 1,000th hit.

1940: Bobo Newsom wins his 9th in a row, stopping the Yankees on four hits. The Tigers move to a game and a half in back of the first-place Indians.

1950: Eleven home runs - a major league record - drive in all the runs scored in a 10 - 9 Tiger win over the Yankees before 51,000 Detroit fans. Detroit has four home runs in the 4th inning as Dizzy Trout, Jerry Priddy, Vic Wertz and Hoot Evers connect. Pitcher Trout's home run, off Tommy Byrne, is his second lifetime grand slam. Evers hits another home run, an inside-the-park 2-run game winner in the 9th off Joe Page to win it. For New York, Hank Bauer connects for two homers, including one in the 4th inning. Joe DiMaggio, Jerry Coleman, Yogi Berra and pinch hitter Tommy Henrich also belt round trippers. It is the first time that nine different players connect for homers in a game.

1998: The Athletics acquire IF-OF Bip Roberts from the Tigers in exchange for a player to be named.

2001: Houston trades Jose Lima to the Tigers for Dave Mlicki.

Detroit 10 - Cleveland 4 ? Josh Tomlin?s day unraveled after two straight drops in the 5th, and Detroit scored seven times for a 9-0 bulge. Twice in the first four innings, Max Scherzer worked through two-on jams against the meat of the order. Cleveland worked his pitch count past 110 in the 6th, but most of that work went for nought, as they went 1-9 with RISP until two meaningless knocks just before the final out. Miguel Cabrera drove in the game?s first 3 runs, including his 13th HR.

Miggy?s RBI single in the 3rd, along with Saturday?s game-winning hit, show how much Victor Martinez is affecting other teams? strategy. Both spots had a base open and one out. Cabrera was IBB?d in 23% of those spots in 2010-13, and 15% in the past two years with Prince Fielder behind him. So far this year, not one IBB to Miggy in 25 such spots, even though V-Mart is a good DP candidate. They?re not pitching around him, either: 3 regular walks in those spots, half his walk rate for 2012-13 in the same situation.

Miggy?s 1,321st RBI tied Jeff Bagwell for the most in a player?s first 12 years. He?s maxed out on that list, as Albert?s next with 1,434.
?Who are those guys?? Scherzer was followed by Blaine Hardy, Pat McCoy and Chad Smith, who each began the year at Toledo. Hardy debuted Monday, the others today. Smith, a 17th-round draft pick three years ago, has come on fast. The door?s open, guys; get a few outs and you?ll be overnight heroes in Motown.
