July 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1913 - The Tigers send 38-year-old George Mullin (1-6), a five times 20-game winner, to Washington. Mullin pitched a no-hitter a year ago on his birthday.

1916: The Tigers beat the 2nd-place Red Sox 3 - 2, in 13 innings when Ty Cobb scores on a Ralph Young single. Cobb reaches on an infield chop and a throwing error by Babe Ruth, who takes over for Rube Foster in the 9th with the score tied 2 - 2.

1948 - An unprecedented 10-game suspension and $500 fine of an umpire, the veteran Bill McGowan, is announced by American League President Will Harridge following a confrontation in the Washington-Cleveland game. Tired of Senator pitcher Ray Scarborough continually complaining about strike calls, McGowan threw a ball-and-strike indicator at him. After that, he ejects Nats manager Joe Kuhel and several coaches. Kuhel also lodged a protest after yesterday's 11th-inning loss when Ed Stewart was thrown out at home in the 10th. When Stewart argued the call with plate ump Joe Paparella, McGowan threw a ball at Stewart.

1958 - Jim Bunning of the Tigers pitches a 3 - 0 no-hitter over the Red Sox and strikes out 12. Only two walks and a hit batsman mar Bunning's performance as he wins his sixth game in seven decisions (8-6). Only one hard hit ball by Ted Williams was caught on the run with an amazing catch by RF Al Kaline. In game two, Ike Delock wins his 10th straight for Boston.

1979: Rusty Staub, a spring holdout who got off to a slow start, is traded by Detroit to his former team Montreal for a minor league player to be named later.

1998: The Tigers take the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees by a 4 - 3 score in 17 innings. The New Yorkers bounce back to take the nightcap by the identical score. The 26 innings take nearly nine hours to play.

2000: Major League Baseball offers to rehire 10 of the 22 umpires let go last September. The offer stands only as part of a new labor contract, and only if the umpires' old union agrees to settle its grievance with baseball.

Ankle soreness not expected to hinder Joba.
DETROIT -- A day after Joba Chamberlain's ankle prevented him from pitching the ninth inning of a tie game, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that he didn't expect the injury to be a problem on Sunday.

"It flares up from time to time," Ausmus said.

With Chamberlain's ankle bothering him after he pitched a 1-2-3 eighth Saturday night, Ausmus opted for closer Joe Nathan in the ninth. Nathan allowed a three-run double to Carlos Santana, giving Cleveland a sweep of the doubleheader.

After the game, Ausmus reiterated that Nathan is still his closer but said he's given thought to using Chamberlain in that role.

"If Joe isn't closing and you have Joba [closing] and for some reason that's what happens, well how do you get to Joba?" Ausmus said. "There's still got to be a chain to get to the closer."

The skipper added that he's not yet near the point where he'd need to make a change to the back of the bullpen.

V-Mart scuffling at plate to begin second half.
DETROIT -- Victor Martinez, likely the MVP of the Tigers' first half, had just two hits in 12 at-bats over his first three games after the All-Star break.

It's no coincidence that the Detroit offense has struggled to produce runs since the break. The Tigers' highest output in the first three games vs. the Indians was three runs. Martinez struck out 23 times in the first half, but he has whiffed four times in the early stages of the second half.

"His timing's a little off," manager Brad Ausmus said. "It's not quite where it was."

Prior to the break, the 35-year-old Martinez was sidelined for the better portion of two weeks with back and side soreness.

Ausmus talked to Martinez following Saturday night's loss, and the designated hitter reported feeling fine. He started at first base Sunday for the first time this month.
