Nathan bounces back with spotless ninth.
DETROIT -- By now, in his 14th big league season, Joe Nathan has accepted the fact that the closer is an easy scapegoat on any baseball team.
"When things go bad, they're all over you," Nathan said Sunday, a day after he gave up three runs in the ninth inning of a tie game that the Tigers eventually lost to Cleveland. "When things go well, they cheer."
This time, Nathan was the recipient of cheers after his 1-2-3 ninth ended the Tigers' 5-1 win over the Indians.
Nathan has been an enigma this season, and his rough night Saturday forced manager Brad Ausmus to answer questions regarding Nathan's status as the team's closer. The veteran has retired the side in order only four times in his last 18 appearances, a far cry from the shutdown closer many Tigers fans envisioned they were getting when the team signed Nathan last offseason.
Meanwhile, the most attractive internal alternative for the closer role, Joba Chamberlain, pitched a scoreless eighth for the second consecutive day.
The Tigers are also reportedly in the market for bullpen help from the outside as the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline approaches. In 2011, Nathan was attempting to come back from Tommy John surgery the year before, and it was then that he learned a valuable lesson -- don't worry about the trade rumors.
"I didn't concern myself then, and I'm surely not going to do it now," Nathan said.
This season, Nathan's name isn't popping up as a candidate for a trade, but any deal for relief pitching could certainly leave him on less-than-level footing.
"I'm way too old to worry about that stuff," Nathan said. "I've done too much in this game, too much in my career. I think it'd be unfair to myself to beat myself up over that kind of stuff after all the things I've been through in my career. That's part of the game and I know stuff's going to be talked about, but that's not for me to worry about."
Ausmus had hinted that rust could have played a role in Nathan's rough appearance on Saturday, as he went over a week without pitching. But he showed no signs of that on Sunday.
"It was crisp," Ausmus said of Nathan's effort. "He was down, got strikes in the bottom of the zone, good slider, looked like he was throwing downhill. I thought he pitched very well."

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 120: The Derek Jeter Invitational.

Topics:
Bad start to the second half: For better or worse, the Detroit Tigers remain streaky as all Hell. They start the second half by losing three straight to the Indians, including dropping both halves of a Saturday doubleheader. With a win on Sunday, the Tigers avoid a sweep and head west with a 5 1/2 game lead over the Tribe. Losing 3-of-4 is not the end of the world, but it wasn't the start you wanted to see.

Time to replace Joe Nathan? Another bad outing for Nathan in Saturday night's 5-2 loss, giving up three runs in the top of the ninth. It was all the more ironic thanks to Ken Rosenthal reporting earlier in the Fox Sports 1 broadcast the Tigers want to acquire bullpen help (rumors abound about their interest in Joakim Soria and Joaquin Benoit), but they don't want to replace Nathan as their closer. Nathan did bounce back with a 1-2-3 outing on Sunday.

Ausmus not ready for a closer change: When asked about the possibility of demoting Nathan, Ausmus admitted it was a possibility, but he wasn't yet considering it.

"I'm sure there's a possibility I could reach a point sometime. I'm not near that point. I'll let you know when I am."
Bullpen struggles: The bullpen's combined numbers in the first two games of the Cleveland series: Seven innings, eight earned runs, 15 hits, five walks. Add Nathan's brutal Saturday night performance and it's eight innings, 11 earned earned runs, 18 hits and seven walks. Of note is Joba Chamberlain didn't pitch in those first two games. At times it feels as if the Tigers have one relief pitcher (Chamberlain) they can truly rely on, while the rest are little more than coin flips ... or worse.

Miguel Cabrera's admission: He tried to backtrack after admitting in a Spanish language interview his lower body was still affected by last season's groin injury and resulting surgery, saying Justin Verlander was having the same issues.

The Derek Jeter Invitational, aka MLB's All-Star Game: Miguel Cabrera hits a two run homer in the first inning, Max Scherzer pitches one inning to get the win, Ian Kinsler played the last few innings, and Victor Martinez showed up to be introduced. But forget about all that. On FOX, it was ALL DEREK JETER, ALL THE DAMN TIME.

The Home Run Derby: It's broken. The derby is too damn long, there's too much Chris Berman, and few true home run hitters take part. Brian Dozier? Really?

Adventures with Phil Coke: Hookslide and Hookslide Jr. have nothing but good things to say about the Tigers' left-hander.

July 21 in Tigers and mlb history:

1936: Mickey Cochrane has a relapse, and Del Baker again takes charge of the Tigers. Detroit takes a pair from the visiting A's winning 8 - 0 behind Tommy Bridges, and 9 - 8 as Schoolboy Rowe wins in relief. The Tigers score a pair in the 8th inning when, with the bases loaded, Mickey Owen hits into a double play. Goose Goslin scores the tying run and Gee Walker, who reaches third base on the play, scores when 1B Chubby Dean is caught napping.

1945 - The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics battle to a 1 - 1 tie in 24 innings. Les Mueller hurls 19 2/3 innings for the Tigers. No hurler has matched this endurance feat.

1959 - Under intense public pressure and the Massachusetts Committee Against Discrimination investigation, the Red Sox become the last club to integrate. Fourteen years after the club passes on Jackie Robinson, despite a successful tryout in 1945, Elijah 'Pumpsie' Green pinch runs and plays shortstop to become the first black to play for the Red Sox. Tomorrow Green will go 0 for 3 against Early Wynn.

1969 - A gala All-Star Game banquet in Washington is one of baseball's great events. An all-time team and all-time living team are announced. Babe Ruth is selected Greatest All-Time Player, and Joe DiMaggio, Greatest Living Player.

1993: In Minnesota's win over Detroit, Tony Phillips goes 0 for 4 with two strikeouts against two Twins pitchers. It is his only game without a hit, walk or hit by pitch in a string of 101 games.

2008 - The Tigers beat the Royals 19 - 4. It is their third time scoring 19 or more runs this season, the first time a major league team had done that since the 1950 Red Sox. Miguel Cabrera drives in six and Matt Joyce five in the rout.
