Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

Suarez on mend, Hunter listed as day to day.
Both outfielder Torii Hunter and shortstop Eugenio Suarez were not in the Tigers' lineup for Wednesday night's game against the Yankees.

Suarez missed his second consecutive start after injuring his left knee while sliding into second base on a successful stolen-base attempt on Monday. Although, Suarez could be available to pinch-hit on Wednesday if he still feels well after completing his pregame routine.

"He does say he feels good," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He'll take ground balls in batting practice today, and we're going to make sure that he can move laterally."

Andrew Romine has filled in nicely as Suarez's replacement at shortstop, and hit his second career home run on Tuesday.

"Romine swung the bat well last night and he's always been good defensively," Ausmus said. "I guess if Romine went out there and swung the bat well tonight, I'd have to consider putting him in there [for Thursday's series finale] for sure."

Hunter's status is not as clear. He left Tuesday's game with a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch in the ninth inning. X-rays were negative.

Rajai Davis started in left field instead of his usual spot in center, while Ezequiel Carrera got the nod in center and J.D. Martinez started in Hunter's spot in right field.

Hunter's hand was still swollen on Wednesday when he walked into the clubhouse, and Ausmus is listing him as day to day.

"It's the fluid in your hand that makes it sore and tough to move," Ausmus said. "As soon as the inflammation goes down and the fluid gets out of there, [feeling in the hand] comes back very quickly. As long as there's no structural damage underneath it."

August 7 in Tigers and mlb history:

1952 - Umpire Bill McGowan is suspended indefinitely by the American League. In a game in St. Louis, McGowan had thrown out Tiger P Billy Hoeft, who had been heckling him from the dugout. When St. Louis writers, who have had a stormy relationship over the years with the veteran McGowan, ask him to identify the player, the umpire refuses, then adds an obscene gesture. The writers' complaint results in a suspension.

1955 - After a 12-17 record in July, the Yankees are in a 4-team race. Tiger Frank Lary beats New York 4 - 2 in game one, and New York then earns a critical 3 - 2 10th-inning win on a Mickey Mantle homer off Babe Birrer.

1978 - Eddie Mathews, Addie Joss, and Larry MacPhail are inducted at Cooperstown.

1985 - A five-year agreement between the union and owners, which includes salary arbitration eligibility increasing from two years to three years, ends the two-day mid-season players' strike. The season will resume tomorrow.

2002: In a historic move, major league baseball players end their long-held opposition to mandatory drug testing by agreeing to be tested for illegal steroids beginning in 2003.

Ezequiel Carrera | OF DET | 1% Owned

In the wake of the Austin Jackson trade, the Tigers called up Carrera to split time with Rajai Davis, at the very least. Let?s talk about Davis first, since he?s Carrera?s primary competition. Davis is a right-hander who can?t hit righties. He currently sports a measly .287 wOBA against them, compared to a .426 mark against southpaws, and for his career, his wOBA versus right-handers stands at exactly the same number as it sits this year. So this ain?t no fluke ? Davis? offensive contributions come solely against lefties. Defensively, his UZR/150 numbers suggest he?s just average in center field as well.

Enter Carrera. The two have very similar offensive profiles ? poor walk rates, slightly above average strikeout rates, limited power, and tons of speed. But Carrera is a lefty, making him a natural platoon partner for Davis. Of course, Carrera himself hasn?t done much against right-handers either, having posted just a .292 wOBA during his short time in the Majors. But spectacular catches like this one help make the case that he could be better defensively than Davis is. He?s also younger and showed some nice improvement in the plate patience department at Triple-A, having walked 11% of the time. It provides hope that he could muster something better than his current 6.1% career walk rate, which would make it that much easier for him to contribute more offensively against right-handers.

If Carrera does end up winning out on the better side of a platoon, he could basically do for fantasy teams what Davis had been counted on for. He has stolen exactly 43 bases in each of the last two seasons, with a couple of homers each year to boot. And you?d kill for some more team speed, right?
