November 14 in Tigers and mlb history:

1900: The National League rejects the American League as an equal, declaring it an outlaw league outside of the National Agreement, thus inaugurating a state of war. This follows the AL's announcement two days ago that it has made arrangements to go into Washington, DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Two weeks later the American Association makes it a three-way battle, but that third circuit will remain a minor league.

1929: Former pitching star Joe McGinnity dies at the age of 58. McGinnity, nicknamed "Iron Man", posted 246 wins in only 10 major league seasons. He will enter the Hall of Fame in 1946.

He won the Triple Crown a year later, but lost the MVP to Joe Gordon of the New York Yankees.
This time, Williams beat out Detroit Tigers ace pitcher Hal Newhouser, a two-time winner of the MVP award who finished second in the balloting.

According to Baseball America's HIT+ metric, Detroit had the best-hitting player development system in 2024. Part of their analysis: "Last year, the Tigers were a surprise addition near the top of the charts. This year, they lead the league in this metric with strong performances from Kevin McGonigle (130 HIT+) and Dillon Dingler (122). Trading Jack Flaherty helped by adding Thayron Liranzo (120) and Trey Sweeney (117). The parent club was a surprise playoff team in 2024, and it seems that there is solid hitting depth in the organization."

November 15 in Tigers and mlb history:

1945: The rules are revised for election of modern players to the Hall of Fame. A runoff election is formulated as a way to qualify more players for selection, but it fails to meet its objective as no one reaches the 75 percent requirement in the runoff. Former players Frank Chance, Johnny Evers and Ed Walsh and former manager Miller Huggins come closest.

1948: The Detroit Tigers drafted Bob Hooper from the New York Giants in the 1948 minor league draft.
1948: The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Ed Mierkowicz from the Detroit Tigers in the 1948 minor league draft.

1950: The Detroit Tigers signed Earl Johnson as a free agent.

1951: New York Giants outfielder Willie Mays is named the National League Rookie of the Year.

1951: The Baseball Writers Association of America name Gil McDougald of the New York Yankees as American league Rookie of the Year. The Chicago White Sox object to McDougald's accolade, offering the statistical accomplishments of their superlative rookie, Minnie Mi?oso.

1957: Milwaukee Braves star Hank Aaron is named National League MVP (44 HR - 132 RBI - .322 BA).

1961: For the second consecutive year, New York Yankees outfielder Roger Maris is named American League Most Valuable Player. The new single-season home run record holder with 61 edges his teammate Mickey Mantle by four points, 202-198. Jim Gentile of the Baltimore Orioles finishes third with 157 points.

1962: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Drysdale wins the 1962 Cy Young Award, outpolling Jack Sanford of the San Francisco Giants with 14 of 18 votes.

1967: Future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox is the overwhelming selection as American League MVP. He receives all but one first place vote in the balloting, the other vote going to Minnesota's Cesar Tovar. Yastrzemski, who led the AL in batting average (.327), home runs (44) and RBI (121), will be the last major leaguer to win the Triple Crown in the 20th Century.

1972: Dick Allen of the Chicago White Sox wins the American League MVP Award by an overwhelming margin over Joe Rudi of the Oakland Athletics. Allen led the AL in home runs (37), runs batted in (113), walks (99) and slugging average (.603).

1983: Shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles is named the Most Valuable Player in the American League. Ripken, who led the league in hits and runs scored, becomes the first major league player to win the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards in back-to-back seasons.

1987: Bill Laskey of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1988: Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson wins the National League MVP Award, edging out New York Mets OFs Darryl Strawberry.

1992: Jeff Kaiser of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1999: The Detroit Tigers signed Luis Polonia as a free agent.

2001: New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, who posted a 20-3 record with 213 strikeouts and a 3.51 ERA, wins the American League Cy Young Award for an unprecedented sixth time. Previously, Clemens captured the award with the Red Sox in 1986, 1987 and 1991, and the Blue Jays in 1997 and 1998. He becomes the first Yankees pitcher to win the award since 1978 when Ron Guidry copped the honor. In the 2004 season, Clemens will win his seventh Cy Young in the National League with the Houston Astros.

2002: The San Diego Padres traded Gene Kingsale to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Rivera.

2003: The Detroit Tigers signed Guillermo Rodriguez as a free agent.

2004: San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds, who is the only player to be the National League Most Valuable Player more than three times, is named by the Baseball Writers Association of America for a record seventh time, including an unprecedented fourth consecutive season. Bonds finished 2004 with a .362 batting average, 45 home runs and 101 RBI. Winning the honor at the age of 40, Bonds surpasses Willie Stargell (39) as the oldest player to win the award.

2005: St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols earns the National League MVP Award, edging Atlanta Braves center fielder Andruw Jones. Pujols was among the NL leaders in most hitting categories and finished with a .330 batting average, 41 home runs and 117 RBI

2005: After months of deadlock, leaders of Major League Baseball and the players union reach an agreement to clean up a performance-enhancing drug scandal that has tarnished the nation's pastime and left lawmakers worried about young athletes imitating the wrong role models. It will require baseball players to submit to several drug tests each year, during and between seasons, and will impose lengthy suspensions for steroid and amphetamine use.
Repeat offenders can be banned for life. The agreement, which must be ratified by both the players and baseball owners, is similar to a proposal offered earlier this year by commissioner Bud Selig.

2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Mike Hessman as a free agent.

2007: Barry Bonds is arraigned on five counts of perjury and obstruction of justice for his involvement in the federal investigation of BALCO.

Justin is the 12th pitcher to win Pitching's Triple Crown.
Verlander also threw his second career no-hitter on May 7th.

2012: In what is portrayed as a classic dispute between defenders of traditional statistics and supporters of sabermetrics, 3B Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers wins the 2012 American League Most Valuable Player Award over Rookie of the Year OF Mike Trout of the Angels by a score of 362 to 281. Cabrera was the first winner of a Triple Crown in 45 years, but Trout finished ahead of him in more advanced measures of a player's value.
Miguel receives 22 of the 28 first-place votes. The Tiger third baseman winning the triple crown in 2012, is the first time that had happened in 45 years.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The 2024 season is over but that doesn’t mean the stories of that year have ended as well.
In fact, much of what happened over the past year still has life. Life that will most likely be renewed in 2025.
Some of these issues are positive in nature, others not so much. It’s up to the Tigers whether they can or are able to harness the good factors once again for the new season and if they will take the necessary steps to finally put an end to the negative ones.
What are we talking about?
Since this is Friday, I’ve got a list of the top 5 best feel-good moments as well as the ones that brought anguish to us all. The former group is one we want to see again in greater frequency and the latter among the topics we most want to see resolved.

How Tigers manager A.J. Hinch brought postseason baseball back to Detroit.

2001: A Minnesota judge issues a temporary injunction that orders the Twins to play their full home schedule and prevents owner Carl Pohlad from selling the team to anyone who will move it. SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Earlier this week, Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott Harris met briefly with the press, answering questions about payroll, a Tarik Skubal contract extension, Alex Bregman and Javier Baez.
Tiger fans were not thrilled. In fact, many read the comments as less than inspiring.
But Harris plays his cards close to the vest. He doesn’t give anything away. Even when he knows that fans really want to know the details on some of the team’s hottest issues.

For the record, he answered no questions about Skubal’s contract extension. Boras injected his own opinion. Nor did Scott explain why the Tigers are not pursuing (at the moment) Alex Bregman. As for Baez, he outlined what the Tigers need to see from him while adding qualifiers for what may happen at SS.
In the business world, it is said that the more you talk, the more leverage you lose. Identifying anything about your strategy gives others an advantage.

Harris’ predecessor, Al Avila, had problems keeping his mouth shut. And the results were reflected in his struggles to trade and sign free agents. Dave Dombrowski was very similar to Harris in keeping everything secret until transactions became official. He usually surprised us with moves no fans saw coming.

So how do you feel about Harris’ method of communicating?
How do you feel about Scott Harris' style of communication?

1. I understand and support the need for a lack of details.

2. He needs to give fans more details.

3. I miss Al Avila.
