Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

August 12 in Tigers and mlb history:

1912: Three men attack Ty Cobb on his way to the Detroit rail station. Cobb sustains a cut on his shoulder, but catches one of his attackers and pistol-whips him. Cobb then travels to Syracuse and gets two hits in an exhibition game.

1932: American League president Will Harridge upholds Detroit's protest of its August 1st game against New York and orders it replayed on September 8. Detroit had protested because Tony Lazzeri's and Ben Chapman's batting order was orally reversed after the lineup cards were handed in before the game.

1945: In the lid-lifter at Briggs Stadium? pitcher Jim Tobin acquired on waivers? pitches 3 scoreless innings against New York and clubs a 3-run game-ending homer in the bottom of the 11th to win 9 - 6. Another former Brave Jim Turner? serves up the homer. The Tigers win the nitecap 8 - 2? behind Hal Newhouser's 18th win.

1947 - After losing the first game to Detroit 7 - 1? the Browns take the nitecap 6 - 5? beating Hal Newhouser in relief. For Newhouser? it is his first loss to the Browns after 15 consecutive wins.

1953: At St. Louis? Ray Boone smashes his 4th grand slam of the year to tie a ML record? as the Tigers win 7 - 3 over the Browns.

1970 - Judge Irving Ben Cooper rules against Curt Flood in his antitrust suit. Cooper says "Decisions of the Supreme Court are not lightly overruled... We find no general or widespread disregard of the extremely important position the player occupies... Clearly the preponderance of credible proof does not favor elimination of the reserve clause." However the judge says changes in the reserve clause should be made through negotiation, but denied Flood damages.

1974: Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford head a group of 6 inductees at Cooperstown.

1980 - Tiger Stadium is packed with 48?361 fans to see Mark Fidrych's return to the big leagues a 5 - 4 loss to the Red Sox. The 1976 American League Rookie of the Year will go 2-3 with a 5.73 ERA in what will be his final attempt to come back from injury? and his last ML season.

1984: Harmon Killebrew? Rick Ferrell? Don Drysdale? Pee Wee Reese? and Luis Aparicio are inducted into the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown? New York.

1987 - The Detroit Tigers, needing pitching help for the pennant drive, acquire Doyle Alexander from the Atlanta Braves for minor league pitcher John Smoltz. Alexander will go 10-1 for the Tigers, but Smoltz will turn out to be a perennial All-Star.

1990 - Alan Trammell has four extra-base hits in one game, three doubles and a homer, for one of the best games of his career, but Tigers + Jack Morris lose to the indians.

1993 - The Tigers defeat the Orioles 17 - 11? as C Chad Kreuter hits a grand slam. It marks the third consecutive game in which a Tiger has hit a grand slam? tying a major league record set by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978. The two teams combine for 37 hits. Travis Fryman is the only one with 4 hits including 3 doubles.

1994 - Major League Baseball players go on strike. For the first time in 90 years, the World Series will not be held.

2007 - Magglio Ord??ez homers twice in the 2nd inning as the Tigers score eight against Dallas Braden. He becomes the second player in Detroit Tigers history to hit two home runs in an inning. All-time great rightfielder Al Kaline was the other back on April 17, 1955.

http://www.detroitnews.com/article/...Whelan-gets-second-taste-show-his-last-chance
Tigers pitcher Kevin Whelan gets a second taste of the show on his last chance.
detnews

Whelan grateful for chance to pitch for Tigers.
Whelan tallied 20 saves with Toledo before getting the call. (MiLB.com)
Kevin Whelan was once a fresh-faced kid out of Texas A&M with dreams of pitching in the big leagues for the Tigers. That, however, was a long time ago.
Much more recently, he was praying just to be able to pitch again.
"It was kind of to the point really this year where I didn't know if I was going to play again, and then got an opportunity with Detroit," he said. "And really, I just sat down and prayed about it with my wife and didn't worry about it, and said, 'If this is our last year, then let's go at it 100 percent.' And things have worked out so far.

When Whelan signed a Minor League contract with the Tigers in the offseason, it wasn't just a reunion. It was a last shot. With a 4.97 ERA at Triple-A Louisville last year, a dramatically lower strikeout rate, a high home-run rate and major surgery in his history, he had no other contract offers.
He didn't look like the pitcher who made it to the Yankees' bullpen for a brief stint in 2011 before undergoing surgery for a torn flexor tendon and bone chip around his right elbow the following year. He didn't feel pain, he said, but he didn't feel normal.
He felt his arm improving at the end of last season, but he needed someone to take a chance. Fortunately, he still had ties to Tigers officials who were in search of pitchers to fill their organizational depth.

"I reached out to [farm director] Dan Lunetta and just asked him for an opportunity," he said.

It took a lot of circumstances, from injuries in the Detroit bullpen to struggles by relievers in Toledo, but Whelan got his shot and rolled. He has 20 saves for Triple-A Toledo, having allowed eight runs on 26 hits over 39 innings with 48 strikeouts.
His splitter is getting swings and misses as well as groundouts. His fastball has new life.
"The split is the pitch," manager Brad Ausmus said. "And really, his numbers speak for themselves."
The final hurdle was a Tigers team in desperate need of fresh arms following a 19-inning marathon loss in Toronto. With that, Detroit purchased his contract and brought him up.
"It was a long road," Whelan said. "I'm just thankful for the opportunity and just very blessed."

Bat boy injured in fall at Pirates-Tigers game.
A bat boy injured his left knee in a fall on the field during the Tigers-Pirates game Monday night at PNC Park.

The bat boy was headed off the infield to the Tigers' dugout following Rajai Davis' two-run double in the top of the eighth inning when he slipped and fell backwards near the first-base coaching box. According to Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, his left knee gave out from under him.

Rand, Tigers assistant athletic trainer Doug Teter and first-base coach Omar Vizquel attended to him as he lay on the ground, seemingly shaken. Rand and Teter helped him off the field as the crowd, which had noticed the fall, quietly cheered.

The bat boy, later moving around on crutches, will be examined by Pirates team doctors on Tuesday, Rand said, and will undergo an MRI exam.

Right-hander Buck Farmer to make major-league debut Wednesday night for Detroit Tigers.
mlive

Farmer set to make spot start Wednesday.
The Tigers were being touted as World Series contenders for a rotation deep enough that Rick Porcello was their fifth starter. Less than two weeks later, they're looking to Robbie Ray and Buck Farmer for starts in crucial games in the thick of a playoff race.

Ray will start Tuesday's against the Pirates at PNC Park, followed by Farmer to open the Detroit portion of the home-and-home series Wednesday at Comerica Park.

For Ray, the move was expected. The return prospect in the Doug Fister trade was the next starter in line at Triple-A Toledo, and was pronounced as the fill-in for injured Anibal Sanchez when the Tigers announced Sunday morning he was headed to the disabled list.

Farmer, however, was a surprise, and not just for the name. He was a fifth-round Draft pick last year out of Georgia Tech and made 18 starts at Class A West Michigan before starting two games for Double-A Erie.

Combine the two levels, and the 23-year-old right-hander is 11-5 with a 2.65 ERA, allowing 101 hits over 115 2/3 innings with 28 walks and 127 strikeouts. But of course, he has done so against younger competition.

The success vaulted him into the eighth spot on MLB.com's list of top Tigers prospects. His ETA to the Majors, however, was listed at 2016.

His biggest advantage going into his Major League debut will be that so few teams have seen him that there'll be little from which to create a scouting report.

"He's pitched very well," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He's got good stuff. Ideally, you'd have more development time. I haven't seen him myself really, maybe one start. Our guys like him. Actually, that's why we moved him to Double-A, because we were concerned about if we need extra pitching down the road, at least to give him some exposure at the next level, and he's pitched very well there twice."

Farmer is not on the 40-man roster, so the Tigers will have to open a spot. They'll also have to create a spot on the 25-man roster.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander had his shortest outing of the season, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned runs, on 4 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in just one inning of work in the Tigers 10-6 loss to the Pirates. It was reported after the game that he left with right shoulder tightness....not good. In addition, I heard on MLB Network Radio that his fastball was clocked in the 88-90 range, and highlights on ESPN last night showed he was definitely not right.
I assume the Tigers will place him on the disabled list, but the timing couldn't be worse, as they just placed Anibal Sanchez and Joakim Soria on the disabled list over the weekend. Verlander took the loss, and is now 10-11 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and a 118-55 strikeout to walk rate in 158.2 innings.
RotoHardball

Detroit today has officially placed RHP Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day DL with a right pectoralis major strain, retroactive to August 9th.

Ausmus on Verlander: "There was no major structural damage. At this point we don't expect him to go on the DL."

Tigers expect that Verlander will miss at least one start. Robbie Ray extremely likely to start Sunday in his place.

Brad Ausmus on Justin Verlander: "The initial news is very good." Said Verlander seemed relieved when he spoke with him.

No major structural damage for Tigers Verlander - shoulder inflammation but no surgery needed, maybe no DL said Ausmus.

Kevin Rand said the MRI showed nothing beyond the normal wear and tear a pitcher's arm goes through. Inflammation? Yes.

Rand: Inflammation is normal wear and tear from all the pitches thrown over the years.

The club has recalled the contracts of lefthanded pitchers Blaine Hardy and Robbie Ray from Triple A Toledo.

News links from all the media soon.
