Hunter believes tough stretch can reinvigorate Tigers.
DETROIT -- There was a lot of quiet consternation in the Tigers' clubhouse at PNC Park after Tuesday's loss, so much so that the quotes were clearly audible at barely above a whisper.

What Torii Hunter said, however, might have said a lot. Their 2-7 trip, their fall out of first place, he suggested, is a test for the club, but not necessarily the worst thing for these guys right now.

"We're going through a tough time right now," he said, "and I promise you the trials and tribulations that we're having are going to make us stronger."

His point: They're going to have to earn this.

"In past years, I'm pretty sure the Tigers have been at the top, and kind of easy," Hunter continued. "But right now, we're being slapped in the face. I think that brings out the fight in you, and I'm excited about it. I hate to say it, but I'm excited.

"We're going to have to fight. You appreciate things you fight for. Anything that's given to you, you kind of don't appreciate it."

The Tigers' two runs to the World Series -- in 2006 and 2012 -- came in years when they headed into the final couple weeks with something to play for. They lost the division lead in the final week of 2006, of course, and ended up having to get through the postseason as the Wild Card. In 2012, they had a three-game deficit with 15 games left to play and ended up clinching with three games to go.

They made a run to pull away in the division in the final month in 2011, clinching with a couple weeks to go, and battled their way to the ALCS before falling to Texas in six games. The one real disappointment in the bunch came last year, when they had a comfortable lead from early August on before finally clinching in the final week.

They've largely been able to cruise this season until the last couple weeks.

"It's what you do during the storm, and how you act during the storm, how you prepare yourself to try to get out of it," Hunter said. "And that shows the character of a man, not the one that's in the storm and just sitting there."

He does not believe that fatigue has been a major factor, though he thinks there might be fatigue going on. He thinks the energy level seems down, but doesn't know why.

"I think you can create it," he said. "I don't think you force. I think you create. And there's a lot of ways you can do that. But you've got to find it within yourself. Everybody's different in creating energy and creating adrenaline. I have my ways, and other people have their ways. Just find a way that works for you, and get it done."

Verlander eager to return to Tigers' rotation.
DETROIT -- Justin Verlander made it clear he takes a lot of pride in having never spent a day in the Major Leagues on the disabled list. He has no plans on breaking that streak now.

"It means a lot to me," he said Wednesday in his first comments since being diagnosed with inflammation in his right shoulder. "I'm very prideful of that. I've put a lot of work into that. I've never actually missed a start before, so this is going to be a little tough."

Manager Brad Ausmus confirmed that left-hander Robbie Ray, who took the loss Tuesday in Pittsburgh, will start Sunday against the Mariners at Comerica Park. Ausmus had left open a slight possibility that Verlander might be ready, but eliminated that Wednesday.

Essentially, the Tigers will skip Verlander's spot. Thanks to next Monday's off-day, they don't need his spot until next Saturday's day-night doubleheader at Minnesota.

Verlander was set to meet Wednesday with team doctor Stephen Lemos to formulate a rehab plan that would give him his best chance at keeping that streak going. At the same time, additional doctors from outside the organization were being consulted to review his test results and the diagnosis.

At this point, Verlander has no plans to see a specialist for a second opinion, but he's keeping his options open.

"I'm going to get other opinions. Whether I need to go visit them or not, I don't know," he said. "The more minds you put together to look at something, the better. Hopefully, they all come back and say, 'Hey, that's what we see, too.' If they say, 'Hey, maybe you want to come in and get evaluated,' OK, I might be willing to [make a visit]."

Verlander said again that he had been dealing with soreness in his shoulder since before his one-inning start Monday in Pittsburgh, but declined to say how long. He also said that while his exams showed no major structural damage, that doesn't mean there was no abnormal wear and tear.

"Structurally, my shoulder looks about as good as you can expect for someone that's been in the league for 10 years," he said.

As for whether he believes he can get back to full strength with the time off, Verlander said, "We'll see. I'm excited to get back out there. Whether it's 100 percent [strength] or not, I'll be ready to pitch".

Tigers option reliever Whelan to Triple-A.
DETROIT -- The daily roster shuffle on the Tigers' pitching staff continues. To make room for starter Buck Farmer on the 25-man roster, Detroit optioned right-hander Kevin Whelan to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, two days after purchasing his contract.

Whelan gave up back-to-back home runs in his 1 1/3 innings of work in Pittsburgh. It was his first Major League appearance since 2011, and his first outing for the Tigers, the team that drafted him in 2005.

Since Whelan still had a Minor League option, the 30-year-old remains on the 40-man roster, and would be eligible to return by the end of August.

Detroit opened a 40-man roster spot for Farmer by designating Double-A Erie catcher Ramon Cabrera for assignment.
The Pirates claimed Cabrera on waivers, bringing him back to his original organization. Cabrera, who hit .277 at Erie this season with five homers and 47 RBIs, spent five seasons in the Pirates farm system before going to Detroit in the Andy Oliver trade in 2012.

The Tigers had a pair of Sunday home games moved to national television.
This Sunday's game against the Mariners remains a 1:08 p.m. ET start, but will be broadcast nationally on TBS.
Their Sept. 7 Interleague matchup with the Giants, meanwhile, has been moved to ESPN's Sunday night slot, beginning at 8 p.m. The latter had been long expected, since ESPN will already have a camera crew in town for a Monday Night Football game between the Lions and New York Giants across the street at Ford Field.
