Farmer realizes dream in big league debut.
DETROIT -- Buck Farmer stepped onto a Major League mound for the first time Wednesday night and thought how far he had come. It wasn't just about being in low Class A ball a few weeks ago, but where he had been long before that.

"My childhood dream became real tonight," he said.

He had been dreaming about this ever since he was a kid in Conyers, Ga. Even with a sellout crowd of 41,043 all around him, however, the noise he heard was the same voice he heard when he pitched as a kid.

"I can always hear my dad when I start," he said of his father, Warren. "That's really the only person I can hear. ? I've kind of been fine-tuned to it for all these years I've been playing baseball. His voice sticks out."

Warren Farmer was telling his son, among other things, to keep the ball down. The way the Pirates were swinging, Warren Farmer had a pretty good idea.

"I thought he did a good job," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He mixed his breaking stuff and his changeup more than we anticipated."

Said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus: "I think the big thing for him was he was able to throw strikes with his offspeed pitches, especially his slider. In fact, he might have thrown more strikes with his slider than he did with his fastball."

Farmer held the Pirates hitless his first time through the lineup, then gave up five hits and four runs the next time through. Just as it looked like he was headed for a quick demise, he recovered to retire five of the final six batters he faced to finish five innings.

If the Tigers hadn't rallied in the fifth inning, Farmer said, he supposedly had the sixth. Once Detroit scored three to tie it, they turned to Blaine Hardy.

Farmer left with a no-decision, having allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. But he left having made a major impression on a group that hadn't seen him at all until Wednesday.

The Tigers optioned him to Triple-A Toledo after the game, his fourth level of baseball in his first full professional season.

"Whether it had been a spot start or I was here the rest of the season, I just wanted to take it all in," Farmer said. "But who's to say? I'm hoping I get back here, but it was one of those things I just took it all in. It's a great feeling to know that if I did do well that if they need another arm to come up, that maybe I'll be the first call."

Johnson spins two perfect innings with Toledo.
DETROIT -- The Tigers saw Jim Johnson throw his third outing for Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, delivering two perfect innings with a strikeout in an 11-0 win over Indianapolis. Now they have a decision to make.

Wednesday was the final scheduled appearance for Johnson, who signed a Minor League contract with the Tigers last week after being released by the A's. The plan called for the Tigers to evaluate him after the three outings and determine the next step.

Detroit brought up a reliever from the Mud Hens Wednesday night, but it wasn't Johnson. Melvin Mercedes, who has alternated between closing and middle relief for Toledo this season, was promoted to take Buck Farmer's roster spot following his spot start.

That said, Johnson wouldn't necessarily have been available to pitch Thursday afternoon after two innings Wednesday night, even though he used just 18 pitches in the process.

Johnson might have revealed the Tigers' short-term decision after the game, telling John Wagner of the Toledo Blade that he felt he could use "at least one more game" in Toledo.

Johnson's Mud Hens tenure featured a rough debut, with two hits and two runs, one earned, in two-thirds of an inning, followed by three hitless innings since.

August 14 in Tigers and mlb history:

1929: It is Charlie Gehringer Day in Detroit, and the popular 2B handles 10 chances in the field, hits three singles and a home run, and steals home in a 17 - 13 win over the Yankees.

1934: The largest weekday crowd in history watches as the Tigers sweep a pair at Yankee Stadium by scores of 9 to 5 and 7 to 3. It is the Tigers' 14th straight; Schoolboy Rowe has won 13 in succession on his way to 16 straight. 2B Charlie Gehringer is the hitting star of the day with 6 rbi in the twin bill. The next day the Yankees will end the Tiger streak.

1935: Schoolboy Rowe beats the Senators 18 - 2 and also goes 5 for 5 at the plate. His hits include a double and a triple, and he scores three and knocks in 3.

1937 Detroit star second baseman Charlie Gehringer collects a personal-high 12 total bases in one game with two singles, a double, and two home runs. It?s in one of two blowout victories Detroit has on the day over the Browns, 16-1 and 20-7.

1948 - Rookie George Vico drives in seven runs to pace the Tigers to a 10 - 3 win over the Browns. Vico is one better than a cycle, collecting two doubles, a triple and homer to back Virgil Trucks' sparkling one-hit relief effort over 6+ innings.

1952 - The St. Louis Browns send Ned Garver to the Tigers for slugger Vic Wertz in a deal involving six other players.

1988 - Detroit pounds Boston 18 - 6 at Fenway Park to end the Red Sox' American League-record home winning streak at 24 games, two shy of the major-league record held by the 1916 Giants. Roger Clemens gives up eight runs in 1 1/3 innings as the temperature hits 97 degrees. SS Alan Trammell, C Matt Nokes, and 1B Dave Bergman each knock in 2 runs, but RF Chet Lemon and DH Darrell Evans each have 5 rbi.

2000 - The Tigers score eight runs in the 5th inning and go on to defeat the Mariners 15 - 4.
