Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

September 8 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917: Detroit beats the Browns 1 - 0 in 12 innings. Ty Cobb triples off the RF fence in the 12th and scores on a sacrifice fly.

1922: Detroit beats the Browns 8 - 3, on Bobby Veach's two homers off Urban Shocker. First baseman Lu Blue pulls off two unassisted double plays, tying the American League record, and both are off line drives by Johnny Tobin.

1946: In the minor leagues Bill Kennedy of Rocky Mount (Coastal Plain League) will be credited with 456 strikeouts, breaking the former mark of 418 set by the Tigers Virgil Trucks in the Alabama-Florida League in 1938.

1961 - The Yanks rout the Indians 9 - 1, as Mickey Mantle hits home run #52, off Gary Bell. The Yanks win for their 9th straight while Detroit loses their 8th in a row to drop 10 games back. The Tigers purchase veteran Vic Wertz from the Red Sox to shore up their offense.

1967: The Tigers move into a first-place tie with the Twins, as Eddie Mathews and Jim Northrup hit home runs, and Mickey Lolich beats Tommy John 4 - 1, at Chicago.

1972: Mickey Lolich wins his 20th game of the year as Detroit tips the Orioles 4 - 3. The Tigers jump on Jim Palmer (18-8) for three runs in the 1st inning.

1995: The Tigers trade IF Juan Samuel to the Royals in exchange for a player to be named.

2008: Gary Sheffield hits a grand slam for the official 250,000th homer in major league history. The blow is Sheffield's 2nd homer of the day and his 13th career grand slam. Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera and Mike Hessman also homer as the Tigers outslug the A's 14 - 8.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 127: A week of treading water.

Topics:

Rob Rogacki interview: We cover the gamut of Tigers' injury issues with Dr. Rob, from effects core muscle surgery had on Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera, to the September status of Joakim Soria and Anibal Sanchez

A week of treading water: The Detroit Tigers were 16-15 in August, are 3-3 in September, 5-5 over their past 10 games, 24-27 in the second half and 4-5 since the last podcast. It's now at the point where the Tigers' treading water is no longer enough. They have to start winning games in bunches, or plan on staying home in October for the first time since 2010.

Six games with the Royals: The Tigers are 2 ? games behind the Royals in the Central, one game back of the Mariners in the wild card. The Tigers play nothing but Central division rivals for the remainder of the season, including six games with the Royals over the next two weeks. Is it sweep KC or bust?

Lets say (God forbid) the Tigers don't make the playoffs: Or have a disappointing postseason, such as a wild card loss or ALDS K.O. Considering the the possibility of massive change (results worsening year to year, aging core, possibility of losing important free agents, size of payroll allowed) is blowing the team up a possibility?

Is Drew Smyly out-pitching David Price? Smyly is in no way better than Price, but the stats since the trade are startling.

Smyly: 1.70 ERA, 2.98 FIP, .178 BABIP, W/L 3-1
Price: 4.08 ERA, 2.62 FIP, .315 BABIP, W/L 2-3

But Price's FIP (much lower than his career 3.30) and Smyly's BABIP (.178 is unsustainable) show there is bad luck involved.

September call-ups: Unlike the days of Jim Leyland where the roster wasn't expanded much in September, there were several prospects called up this week - Outfielder Steven Moya was brought up from Double-A Erie, while catcher James McCann, outfielder Tyler Collins, infielder Hernan Perez, and pitchers Kyle Lobstein, Kyle Ryan and Robbie Ray got the call from Triple-A Toledo. Looking forward to watching anyone in particular?

McCann will not get much playing time: Despite Alex Avila's injury (more concussion-like symptoms), McCann's ability to hit right-handed pitching and the likelihood he's part of a big league platoon next season, Brad Ausmus does not plan on playing the rookie, unless Avila doesn't improve.

Ausmus: "In September, a team is trying to make a playoff spot, and we're going to stick a rookie catcher in there? I don't think that would be prudent."

Justin Verlander pics: Verlander and his significant other, supermodel Kate Upton, had nude pics released to the internet (along with numerous other celebrities) after an iCloud hack. Verlander handled it by simply saying, 'I keep my personal life personal.' Before making judgment, keep in mind everyone involved was the victim of a crime.

Jack Morris TV audition: Fox Sports Detroit announced that Jack Morris, who currently works Twins games for Fox Sports North, would be joining Mario Impemba and Rod Allen on the Tigers' broadcast for six games next week. According to the News' Tony Paul, there may be a three-man booth next season. FSD wants to add a pitcher's perspective to the TV broadcast, be it from Morris or someone else.

All that, plus tangents galore!

Upcoming guests:

September 12: Mario Impemba, Tigers play-by-play man for Fox Sports Detroit
September 19: Rod Allen, member of the 1984 Tigers, color analyst for Fox Sports Detroit.
Tentative, date TBD: Dan Dickerson, Tigers radio play-by-play man.
