Pitching proves to be mound of trouble for Tigers.
Detnews
Detroit is 28th among 30 big-league teams in ERA and 27th in the more telling pitching metric known as WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). The Tigers bullpen, a steady problem in 2015 that probably had the most to do with Dombrowski's dismissal, is 28th and 29th in those categories, respectively.
Elsewhere, ERA and WHIP numbers are, at best, unsettling, and, at worst, hard to imagine for pitchers who in some cases are gone, were shuttled to and from the minors, or remain in Detroit:
Rondon, 6.23 and 1.62; Kyle Ryan, 5.72 and 1.58; Nesbitt, 5.40 and 1.38; Ian Krol, 6.65 and 1.98; Buck Farmer, 7.54 and 1.76; Matt Boyd, 6.75 and 1.61; Neftali Feliz, 10.50 and 1.78; Guido Knudson, 18.00 and 3.20; Gorzelanny, 6.62 and 1.82.
It is an unsightly set of statistical columns. It also carries with it an asterisk alongside this name: Joe Nathan.
Nathan has a season ERA and WHIP of 0.00. It represents one inning of work in April, before he tore a ligament and had his second Tommy John surgery.
