Detroit Tigers: Breaking Down Mikie Mahtook Acquisition, Potential Impact.

Analysis:
With questions still floating around about the Tigers plans for their outfield, the organization made a minor move to help shore up the group, adding Mahtook from the Rays. Mahtook has spent part of each of the last two season with the big league club, with a strong 2015 season, but struggled mightily in 2016, hitting only .195 in 65 games with a .523 OPS. In 2015, it was a vastly different story, with a .295 average and .970 OPS. Mahtook brings an intriguing power/speed combo to the table, with the ability to play all three spots in the outfield. His power has shown itself more in line drive than over the fence power, and has been limited in games given a lack of plate discipline that has resulted in lots of strikeouts and very few walks.

As far as the Tigers are concerned, Mahtook is likely in the running for one of the outfield spots, and might even have a chance to compete to start in center field. Mahtook more likely projects as a better candidate to be a fourth or fifth outfielder, or potentially a platoon partner that gets starts against left-handed pitching. He was stronger against lefty pitching, with an OPS about 250 points higher than against righties. That would complement a player like Tyler Collins (or Anthony Gose) well.

Speaking of Gose, to make room on the 40-man roster, the Tigers designated Gose for assignment. Given Gose?s issues last year, he?s obviously not in the Tigers good graces, and just about any other organization will likely have similar skepticism. If he does clear waivers, it?s possible the Tigers would still bring him to big league camp and give him a chance to compete, given the lack of a clear option for center field, and Gose?s success at times in the past.

Rays fans are upset about Mikie Mahtook?s departure.
If nothing else, the Tigers? new center fielder was well-liked in Tampa.

January 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1930 - Commissioner Landis bans boxing for all players following the brief boxing career of Chicago White Sox first baseman Art Shires. His challenge to slugger Hack Wilson purportedly prompts the ban. Shires fought several suspected bouts that resulted in his being suspended by the boxing commissions of 32 states but loses a desultory five-rounder to Chicago Bears center George (The Brute) Trafton. Shires did win a punch-out with Sox manager Lena Blackburne and two hotel detectives late last season.

1947 - Former Negro Leagues legend Josh Gibson dies from a brain tumor at the age of 35. Considered by many to be the greatest home run hitter in the history of the Negro Leagues, Gibson will eventually gain election to the Hall of Fame in 1972, when he is selected by the Special Committee on the Negro Leagues.

1966 - The Baseball Writers Association of America elects former Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams to the Hall of Fame. Williams, the last major league batter to hit .400, receives 282 of a possible 302 votes. He won the Triple Crown twice, the American League MVP Award twice, and produced the highest career on-base percentage of all time (.483), even though he lost five years to military service.

2000 - The 30 major league owners vote to give all their Internet rights to the Commissioner's office. This decision allows for the creation of mlb.com, which will become a model of success for other professional sports leagues. Bud Selig is expected to parcel out monies earned from the venture in equal amounts.
