Mike Ilitch's death opens questions about Detroit sports; U-M, MSU get boosts.
Mlive

Once all the tributes are paid and the great entrepreneur and sports owner's death is digested, there will be some intrigue about how the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings are operated moving forward after the passing of owner Mike Ilitch.

Ilitch, the Little Caesars founder who died Friday at 87, was known for his largesse in the effort to build winners. He took moribund franchises at the time of purchase and turned the Red Wings into four-time Stanley Cup winners and the Tigers into two-time American League champions during his ownership.

That kind of financial commitment among sports owners is no guarantee. Ilitch had it. The ownership of half of Detroit's major-league franchises is about to change, virtually overnight. How that happens will shape the city's sports landscape for years to come.

It will be a strange sensation when spring training opens this week in Lakeland, Fla., days after Ilitch's passing.

I don't know that Ilitch's death was one of those moments that everyone will remember where they were when it happened. I will. I walked into The Palace of Auburn Hills for Friday's Spurs-Pistons game and didn't even have a chance to drop my computer before I heard about it.
