Tigers Gameday: Daniel Norris aims to end Detroit's recent skid vs Astros.
Mlive

NOTABLE

*Justin Upton is hitting .169 with three home runs and five RBIs in May, while Nicholas Castellanos is batting .187 with one home run this month.

*Norris is making his ninth start of the season. He allowed a season-high five earned runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings against Texas in his last start.

*Norris has never faced Houston in his career. Carlos Beltran (1 for 3) and Juan Centeno (0 for 2) are the only current Astros who have at-bats against him.

*This is Morton's first season in the American League after spending the first nine years in the National League.

*Morton has allowed four earned runs in each of his past two starts. He has struck out 59 in 50 2/3 innings this season.

*Morton allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings in his only start against Detroit in 2012.

*Upton is 2 for 10 against Morton, while Alex Avila, and Ian Kinsler both are 1 for 2.

Tigers unworried about quiet bats: 'I can promise you, we'll hit'.
Mlive

* Tyler Collins, who got the night off on Tuesday, homered twice in Detroit on May 17 to break out of an 0-for-30 slump. In six games since then, he's 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts.

Alex Avila, recently one of the hottest hitters in baseball, struck out in all four at-bats on Monday night.

* Nicholas Castellanos is 0-for-11 with six strikeouts in the last three games and is hitting just .187 in the month of May.

* Justin Upton is 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts in his last four games. He's batting .169 in May.

* Jose Iglesias is just 6-for-48 (.125) in his last 12 games.

Tigers trying to reverse their May swoon.
Detnews

Here is where the Tigers rank in May among the 15 American League teams entering play Wednesday:

■Batting average: 14th, .229

■Hits: 14th, 153

■Slugging percentage: 14th, .392

■Runs: Tied for 12th, 90

■Home runs: Tied for 12th, 23.

■Strikeouts: Fourth most, 184

It has been a collective struggle: Upton (.169, 0 for his last 12), Nick Castellanos (.187, 0-for-11), Jose Iglesias (.125),

Andrew Romine (.196), Tyler Collins (0 for 30, 2 homeruns, 0-for-15).

Statistical Breakdown

Below are stat lines for three Tigers players:

Tigers Player A: 79 wRC+, .295 on-base percentage, .289 wOBA, 7.0 walk percentage.
Detroit Player B: 38 wRC+, .281 on-base percentage, .230 wOBA, 9.1 walk percentage.
Tigers Player C: 35 wRC+, .220 on-base percentage, .225 wOBA, 3.1 walk percentage.
To narrow things down, the above players are Detroit?s three top options at shortstop.

Player A is Andrew Romine, Player B is Dixon Machado and Player C is Jose Iglesias. The underlying theme is that all three have had underwhelming seasons at the plate.
Iglesias has been the most underwhelming of all.
