May 25 in Tigers and mlb history:

1906 - Martin Dihigo is born in Matanzas, Cuba. Over the course of his career, Dihigo will make seamless transitions between all nine positions and play in several countries. As a hitter he will lead the Negro Leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935; as a pitcher he will win more than 300 games and defeat Satchel Paige while touring Cuba. He will be elected to the American Hall of Fame in 1977, becoming the only player in history to be inducted to the American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican and Venezuelan Halls of Fame.
He will later add yet another honor as one of the inaugural inductees in the Latin American Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

1922: After being thrown out at second base trying to stretch a single, New York's Babe Ruth throws dirt in the face of umpire George Hildebrand and then goes after a fan. Ruth is ejected, and eventually fined $500 and suspended one game by American League president Ban Johnson.

1937: Tiger catcher/manager Mickey Cochrane is beaned in the head by a pitch from New York?s Bump Hadley. Cochrane is unconscious for seven days and nearly dies as a result. The future Hall of Famer never plays another game in the big leagues, though he returns to manage Detroit the next season.

1968: One day short of the six year anniversary (5-26-1962) of Al Kaline's worst injury, Oakland A's scumbag pitcher Lew Krause drills Al in his right arm fracturing it. Kaline will be lost to the Tigers until July 1.

1975: Mickey Lolich wins his 200th game for the Tigers, becoming just the third pitcher to win that many for Detroit. In a rain-shortened game in Chicago, Lolich beats the White Sox, 4-1 with seven innings of work. The lefty will win 207 games for the Tigers, third all-time behind Hooks Dauss and George Mullin.

1979: The Cincinnati Reds traded Champ Summers to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later. The Detroit Tigers sent Sheldon Burnside (October 25, 1979) to the Cincinnati Reds to complete the trade.

2001: The Detroit Tigers signed Lyle Mouton as a free agent.

2006: The Detroit Tigers released Matt Mantei.

Tigers Gameday: Justin Verlander looks to continue dominance vs Astros.
Mlive

Notable:
Houston?s pitching staff continues to lead the American League in ERA (3.46) and strikeouts (463). The Astros struck out nine Tigers in Wednesday?s 6-3 loss.

Verlander is making his 10th start of the season. He allowed three runs on four hits in seven innings against Texas in his last start.
Verlander has dominated the Astros in his career. He is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in seven starts. He has struck out 56 in 48 1/3 innings.
Notable Houston batters vs Verlander include Norichika Aoki .300 (6 for 20), Josh Reddick .154 (4 for 26), Carlos Beltran .063 (1 for 16), Jose Altuve .545 (6 for 11) and George Springer .500 (5 for 10, 1 HR).

Fiers is coming off one of his best starts of the season, in which he allowed two runs ? one earned ? on six hits in six innings vs Cleveland.
Fiers is 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA in four career starts against Detroit.
Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez all are 2 for 11 against Fiers, while J.D. Martinez is 4 for 9, including a home run.

The Daniel Norris the Tigers need.
The Tigers electric lefty holds the key to the team getting on track.
Norris may be catching that wave
Ever since the Detroit Tigers acquired Daniel Norris at the 2015 trade deadline, streakiness has been his calling card. Obviously some minor injuries played a role in breaking up his first two seasons, but there?s no denying that he?s been inconsistent despite quite good overall numbers for a just turned 24 year old starting pitcher. And yet in both 2015 and 2016, when Norris finally found a groove, he ripped off long stretches of good starts.

Such inconsistency is, of course, natural for a young pitcher. But as we?ve emphasized since the 2016 season ended in disappointment, the Tigers young starting pitchers are the key to their chances to make an October run this season. Michael Fulmer has continued to maintain the same incredible performance he displayed in 2016. Matt Boyd has been erratic, but more often than not has given the Tigers a chance to win in his starts. It?s Daniel Norris who has the potential to turn the Tigers? rotation from a middle of the road unit into one of the better rotations in the game. They have to hope that Wednesday night?s outing against the Houston Astros represents the beginning of a run for the mercurial lefty.

Norris continued to battle his command in the early going, but unlike many of his starts this season, he was able to limit the self-inflicted wounds and eventually find his rhythm. He kept the walks off the board for the most part, and started pounding the zone to a more consistent degree. And when he did, the Astros couldn?t do much at all against him.

Norris is clearly a feel pitcher and isn?t at his best when he?s holding a pack of mechanical cues in his head. He needs to just let it rip and trust his stuff without trying to be too fine. And yet he also has a tendency to get too amped up out there. For all Norris calm, soft-spoken demeanor off the mound, anyone who?s ever seen him burn off the mound to make a play understands that this is a guy whose motor runs hot when he?s pitching. The key, is to keep from over-thinking things, without letting his natural energy spin him out of control. For his part, Norris felt that he took a step toward finding that balance on Wednesday night. A pitcher can?t fight their nature. Here?s hoping he?s learning to ride his own high energy wave.
