Tigers hit 3 rare dingers, but still lose to White Sox: Quick takeaways.

April 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: On Opening Day, before 8,376 fans at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds, the Boston Americans defeat the Philadelphia Athletics in the morning game of a Patriots' Day twin bill, 9 - 4. Connie Mack's Athletics win the matinee match-up featuring two future Hall of Fame pitchers, 10 - 7, as 27,658 spectators enjoy watching starters Eddie Plank and Cy Young oppose one another.

1908: Henry Chadwick dies at age 83 in Brooklyn, New York. A sportswriter and historian, Chadwick was one of the prime movers in the rise of baseball to its unprecedented popularity at the turn of the 20th century. He will be elected to the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee in 1938.

1910: Addie Joss of the Cleveland Naps pitches his second career no-hitter. A busy Joss helps himself by recording 10 fielding assists during the 1 - 0 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

1912: The Boston Red Sox play the first game in the history of Fenway Park, after three previous attempts to play the opener have been rained out. The Red Sox open up with an 11-inning, 7 - 6 victory over the New York Highlanders, the predecessors to Boston's arch-rivals, the New York Yankees. Tris Speaker delivers the game-winning RBI before a crowd of 27,000 fans.

1912: The Detroit Tigers christen their Navin Field with a 6 - 5 win over the Cleveland Naps.
Ty Cobb has 2 hits, scores 2 runs, and steals 2 bases. Starting pitcher George Mullin hits the walkoff RBI.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C8QxqJIXcAE5XSN.jpg

1914: The 25-player limit is suspended in the American and National leagues. With uncertainty over who has signed with what teams as a result of the creation of the Federal League, it is almost impossible to know how many players may be on the roster at any one time.

1927: WWJ airs the first #Tigers first radio broadcast from Navin Field, with Ty Tyson at the microphone. Tyson would call Tiger games until 1953.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C8QyDwAWsAA-tXE.jpg

1932: The New York Yankees draw the largest paid attendance, 55,452, for any Yankee Stadium opener. Babe Ruth homers as Lefty Gomez beats Lefty Grove in the 8 - 3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics.

1937: Gee Walker hits for the cycle on Opening Day to lead the Tigers to a 4 - 3 victory over Cleveland. Walker hits the cycle in reverse order: home run, triple, double and single. This game starts a 27 game hitting streak for Walker.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C93SFGUXoAAXgHX.jpg

1938: Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians pitches the first of 12 career one-hitters, beating the St. Louis Browns, 9 - 0.

1939: The Boston Red Sox show off their prize rookie Ted Williams before 30,278 in their opener at Yankee Stadium, delayed two days because of rain. After striking out twice, Williams collects a double off New York Yankees pitcher Red Ruffing, who wins 2 - 0. Lou Gehrig makes an error, goes hitless, and lines into two double plays in the only game featuring the two great sluggers. Other notables in what will become a historic box score include Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Red Rolfe, and losing pitcher Lefty Grove. New York scores its first run on a home run by Dickey and its second tally on an error by Foxx. Boston has baserunners in each inning, but Ruffing tosses just the second opening day shutout in Yankees history. Four umpires work the game including third base ump George Pipgras, the starting pitcher for the Yankees in the 1929 opener against Boston. Curiously, his opponent for that day was Ruffing.

1941: The Brooklyn Dodgers become the first major league team to wear protective headgear. Each player's cap features a special plastic lining designed to fend off the effects of beanballs. It is a cautious response to the numerous beanball wars of 1940 that hospitalized Joe Medwick and Billy Jurges, among others. The liners in the caps are thin enough to be hardly noticeable, but most major league players disdain the protection.

1943: The season starts, two weeks later than customary. Stalwarts such as Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Enos Slaughter and Johnny Mize are gone to military service, among some 60 players who could have been classified as regulars in the 1942 season.

1944: Elmer Gedeon becomes the first major league player to lose his life serving in World War II. The 26-year-old Gedeon, who played briefly as an outfielder for the Washington Senators in 1939, dies when his plane is shot down over St. Pol, France. Gedeon served in the Army Air Corps.

1948: Tigers' Sam Vico hits a home run on the first pitch of his first career at bat in tigers 5 - 2 win over white sox.

1966: At Connie Mack Stadium, Hank Aaron hits his 399th and 400th home runs to lead the Atlanta Braves to a victory, 8 - 1, over the Philadelphia Phillies. The first shot is off starter Ray Culp in the 1st inning, and number 400 comes in the 9th, off Bo Belinsky.

1967: Tom Seaver of the New York Mets records his first major league victory with a 6 - 1 triumph over the Chicago Cubs. Seaver goes 7 2/3 innings and gives up eight hits and one run.

1968: Detroit Tigers pitcher Jon Warden, the last man to make the team in spring training, makes his third appearance, and wins for the third time in relief, as Detroit beats the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park in 10 innings, 4 - 1.
Tigers improve to 7-1 on Dick Tracewski's 2-run single in the 10th.
Due to a torn rotator cuff injury after being selected by the Kansas City Royals in the expansion draft, the rookie sensation, who will be the only Tiger not to appear in the World Series, will pitch only one season finishing with a 4-1 record and a 3.62 ERA.

1973: Four months after his death, Pittsburgh Pirates great Roberto Clemente is inducted into the Hall of Fame in a special election.

1984: Milt Wilcox holds the White Sox to 2 runs over 8 innings. With 2 outs in the 9th, Lance Parrish hits a fly ball toward RF, Ron Kittle dives, ruled a trap, Lou Whitaker scores for the walk-off win. The Tigers never led till the final play and 33,554 fans go home happy with the 3 - 2 victory.

1986: Vida Blue of the San Francisco Giants wins his 200th career game, combining with Jeff Robinson to shut out the Padres, 4 - 0.

1988: On the 76th birthday of Tiger Stadium, the Tiger Stadium Fan Club organizes a "Stadium Hug".
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DbPYWbMXcAEUjqi.jpg

1988: Orioles fall to 0-14, breaking the record for losses to start a season that was held by the 1904 Senators and 1920 Tigers.

2006: Julio Franco, at 47 years, 240 days old, becomes the oldest player in major league history to hit a home run. At Petco Park, Franco connects for a two-run, pinch-hit shot off Scott Linebrink that launches the Mets' six-run 8th inning and propells them to a 7 - 2 comeback victory against the Padres. This gives Franco the spot in the record book that had belonged to Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Jack Quinn, who was 46 years, 357 days old when he homered on June 27, 1930. Franco already was the oldest player to hit a grand slam and a pinch-hit homer, and to have a multi-homer game. He also has four career pinch-hit homers.

2012: The Detroit Tigers purchased Zach Miner from the Kansas City Royals.

2014: The Detroit Tigers released Alex Gonzalez.

2016: Victor Martinez gets his 1,000th career RBI in a 3-2 win in Kansas City.

2018: Tigers win on a walk-off home run by JaCoby Jones and beat the royals 3 - 2.

Tigs Town Bourbon and Baseball BS Podcast: April Has Flown By. 95 minutes.

In the latest podcast, Paul and Mark return after a month break to enjoy some beers and how Paul has the magic touch to curse a pitcher and revive an offense with a single sentence.

The two then dive into why the Tigers offense has been so bad and how excited we should be about the quartet of starting pitching prospects off to good starts.

They wrap up with which top 50 prospect they expect to make their big league debut next, and the listen question that gets to the ins-and-outs of ranking marginal prospects and how a fun name could matter.

Deep dive topics include;
Why has the Detroit Tigers offense been so bad to start the year?

Can Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera start carrying this lineup?

Will the youngsters like Jeimer Candelario hit their weight?

The outstanding start from the quartet of pitching prospects down on the farm, including what the Tigers will do with a dominating Casey Mize, and who Tigers fans should be most excited about amongst the other three - Matt Manning, Alex Faedo and Beau Burrows.

Which top 50 prospect is likely to make their debut next - Mark thinks Willi Castro, Paul goes with Jake Robson - both explain why.

Why is Daniel Reyes not getting as much attention as Brock Deatherage, and the challenges with late round draft picks.

April 21 in Tigers and mlb history:

1887: Joe McCarthy is born in Philadelphia. McCarthy will become the first manager to win pennants with both National and American League teams, and will win nine league titles overall and seven World Series championships. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.

1910: The new League Park opens in Cleveland, with a capacity of 21,000. 18,832 watch Detroit and Ed Willett beat the Naps, 5 - 0.

1912: The New York Giants and New York Highlanders stage an exhibition game to benefit survivors of the RMS Titanic. The Giants win the game, 11 - 2.

1933: The New York Giants purchased George Uhle from the Detroit Tigers for $20,000.

1955: At Ebbets Field, the Brooklyn Dodgers beat Robin Roberts and the Philadelphia Phillies, 14 - 4, for their 10th consecutive victory from the start of the season, setting a major league record that will last until 1981.

1957: A power failure stops a major league game for the first time in history. The night game between the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium is halted after five innings.

1957: Don Hoak of the Cincinnati Redlegs unwittingly brings about a change in the baseball rules. Leading off second base, Hoak intentionally interferes with an apparent double play grounder. Hoak is called out, but the batter is safe.
A new rule will result: if a runner willfully interferes with a batted ball that could result in a double play, both the runner and the batter will be called out.

1961: The Minnesota Twins, formerly known as the Washington Senators, play their first home game in Minnesota at Metropolitan Stadium, losing to the expansion "new" Washington Senators, 5 - 3.

1965: Tigers beat the Athletics 1-0 in their home opener on an RBI double by Don Demeter in the 4th inning and a shutout by Hank Aguirre and Larry Sherry.

1966: The Chicago Cubs make one of the best trades in franchise history, acquiring future Hall of Fame pitcher Ferguson Jenkins from the Philadelphia Phillies in a five-player deal. The Cubs surrender pitchers Bob Buhl and Larry Jackson for Jenkins, outfielder Adolfo Phillips, and first baseman John Herrnstein. Jenkins, who had made his major league debut in 1965, will win 20 games for the Cubs in 1967.

1968: Tigers win their 8th and 9th straight in a doubleheader sweep in Chicago. Earl Wilson and Denny McLain each pitch CGs, hold the White Sox to 3 runs total.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D3LJ18iXkAAm68E.jpg

1971: Willie Stargell hits three home runs, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 10 - 2 victory over the Atlanta Braves. Stargell, who also hit three home runs against Atlanta on April 10th, will set a major league record - since broken - for the most home runs in April with eleven.

1977: Dave Rozema pitches a 4-hit shutout at Fenway Park for his first career win, Tigers win 8-0.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D3LJodxXkAUej9l.png

1982: The Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds, 4 - 3, for their 13th straight victory to begin the season.

1984: Tigers set an AL record with their 11th win in their first 12 games of the season. Lou Whitaker goes 2-for-3 with a home run in 4 - 1 win over white sox.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C9JAB2AXsAEYh50.jpg

1994: Cleveland Indians first baseman Eddie Murray hits home runs from both sides of the plate in a game for the 11th time in his career to break the record set by Mickey Mantle. Cleveland beats the Twins, 10 - 6.

2006: Tigers win on an Ivan Rodriguez home run in the top of the 9th and beat the mariners 2 - 1.

2008: The Detroit Tigers released Henry Mateo.

2011: Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association come to an agreement on paying pensions for major league players active from 1947 to 1979 who failed to qualify for a pension at the time.
Until 1979, players needed to have completed four full years of major league service to qualify for a pension, leaving hundreds short. Since 1980, pension benefits accrue from the first day a player spends in the majors. 904 players will receive benefits thanks to the agreement.

2015: The Detroit Tigers signed Luke Putkonen as a free agent.

Moving Josh Harrison out of lead-off spot problematic for Tigers.
Detnews

Harrison sticking atop lineup.
The Tigers signed Josh Harrison in February in part to serve as a veteran presence in the leadoff spot. The early returns have been less than productive -- Harrison entered Sunday 9-for-70 (.129) with five walks and a .205 on-base percentage -- but Gardenhire is hopeful he’s coming out of it.

“He just needs to lay off the higher pitches,” Gardenhire said. “When he swings at those, it really goes straight up in the air.”

Harrison has always been more apt to put the ball in the air than on the ground. His ground ball/fly ball ratio of 0.60 entering Sunday was the same as last season and virtually the same as '17. However, his line-drive rate has fallen from 27 percent in '18 to 21 percent entering Sunday, which would be his lowest rate for a season since his first few years in the Majors from 2011-13, according to baseball-reference.com.
The metrics from Statcast shed a little more light on it:

• Harrison’s average launch angle has jumped from 14.9 degrees last season to a career-high 18.9 degrees in 2019 entering Sunday.

• Harrison’s chase rate of 36.2 percent is nearly even with 2018 (36.0 percent), but his contact rate on chase pitches is down from 68.9 percent last year to 58.8 percent entering Sunday.

• While Harrison’s solid contact (7.1 percent) and barrel (3.6 percent) rates are about the same as last season, the percentage of batted balls he has gotten under is up to 41.1 percent, well above his 30 percent rate last year.

“I just want him to cover the ball a little bit,” Gardenhire said. “He’s chasing up in the zone a little bit too much, and to be a good leadoff man, you have to stay off those pitches. This ballpark’s not conducive.”

Though Gardenhire admits he has pondered moving Harrison in the lineup for a stretch to reduce the pressure, he’s inclined to stick with Harrison up top. Jeimer Candelario has batted leadoff the two times Harrison hasn’t played, and he was scheduled to lead off on Saturday with Harrison off before the rainout. But both games prior to Saturday were before Christin Stewart went on the injured list, dwindling the Tigers’ options for the middle of the order. Ronny Rodriguez was scheduled to bat fifth on Saturday; John Hicks batted cleanup and Grayson Greiner hit fifth when Candelario led off last Sunday.

“Taking Candy and leading him off, the depth from the rest of the way on down gets really dicey,” Gardenhire said.

April 22 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: The American League formal Opening Day is played at Columbia Park, with the Philadelphia Athletics winning over the Boston Americans, 6 - 1, before 13,578. Rube Waddell bests Bill Dineen as AL President Ban Johnson presents the 1902 AL Championship pennant to the Athletics.

1903: At American League Park, the New York Highlanders lose their first game to the Washington Senators, 3 - 1, before 11,950 fans. Washington elects to bat first, but the New Yorkers score in the bottom of the opening inning to take a 1 - 0 lead. 1904: The Detroit Tigers signed Bobby Lowe as a free agent.

1906: A new baseball rule puts the umpire in sole charge of all game balls. The home team manager previously had some say as to when a new ball was introduced.

1914: At age 19, Babe Ruth plays his first professional game as a pitcher, as he throws a six-hit, 6 - 0 shutout for the Baltimore Orioles over the Buffalo Bisons. The second batter Ruth faces is Joe McCarthy, the manager he will play for 17 years later with the Yankees. Ruth is 2 for 4 at the plate in addition to his great pitching.

1915: Pinstripes first appear on New York Yankees uniforms.

1916: Philadelphia Athletics pitcher Jack Nabors tops the Boston Red Sox, 6 - 2. His only victory of the season evens his record at 1-1. Nabors will follow with 19 straight losses to set a major-league record.

1931: Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees collides with Charlie Berry, Boston Red Sox catcher and former pro football player, while trying to score on a sacrifice fly. Ruth is carried off the field at Fenway Park and taken to a hospital.

1937: Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson are among 18 black players who jump to the Dominican Republic league. Negro League owners regard this as desertion and plan to ban the players from the league. In May, Paige will be banned for life.

1938: Tigers open newly expanded Briggs (Tiger) Stadium: first stadium to have a completely enclosed second deck. Tigers drop the home opener to Cleveland, 4-3.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C99hydcVYAAafpP.jpg

1957: John Kennedy becomes the first black to play for the Philadelphia Phillies, making them the last National League team to integrate. Kennedy pinch runs for Solly Hemus in the 5 - 1 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. He will play only briefly in five games, two at third base, and will go hitless.

1960: A record opening day crowd of 53,563 at Briggs Stadium sees the Detroit Tigers chalk up their third straight win, 6 - 5, against the Chicago White Sox. Recently-acquired Rocky Colavito blasts a home run in his first at-bat with Detroit, and Eddie Yost adds a home run in the 5th inning.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C8f0-oLWsAAADUq.jpg

1961: At Comiskey Park, Pumpsie Green hits a home run in the 11th-inning as the Boston Red Sox snap a 13-game losing streak by edging the Chicago White Sox, 7 - 6.

1968: The Detroit Tigers signed Dick Radatz as a free agent.

1970: Tom Seaver of the New York Mets strikes out the last ten batters he faces in a 2 - 1 victory against the San Diego Padres. Seaver gives up only two hits and finishes with a total of 19 strikeouts, tying Steve Carlton's major league record.

1976: The Cincinnati Reds purchased John Knox from the Detroit Tigers.

1978: Jack Morris receives a "standing boo" at Tiger Stadium after being announced as a last-minute replacement for the injured Mark Fidrych. Tigers beat Texas 7-6 in 10 innings.

1984: Tigers improve to 12-1 with a 9-1 win over the White Sox. Hot bats on a snowy day at Tiger Stadium: Kirk Gibson hits a 2-run home run. Chet Lemon goes 4-for-4. Juan Berenguer pitches 7 scoreless innings in his first start of the season.

1991: Bo Schembechler blasts #TigerStadium in a speech to the Economic Club of Michigan.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C99Y3qOXsAA7HYH.jpg

1992: Tigers get home runs from Cecil Fielder, Mickey Tettleton, Rob Deer, and Travis Fryman in a 12-8 win in Texas. The Tigers jump out to a 7-1 lead but allow the Rangers to tie it at 7 before pulling away. The Tigers are 5-11 but lead the majors in home runs with 25.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D4X7P25WsAUo_Ny.jpg

1993: Chris Bosio pitches a no-hitter to give the Seattle Mariners a 7 - 0 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Bosio walks the first two batters he faces, then finishes the game by retiring the last 27 Red Sox in a row. He strikes out four in his 97-pitch gem.

1998: Chicago White Sox second baseman Ray Durham ties a major league record by reaching base on an error three times in Chicago's 14 - 7 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Durham adds three hits with four runs and two RBI. Durham is also involved in two other plays in which he advances on errors - a stolen base in which he goes to third base on a throwing error, and he triples and scores on another error.

2000: Tigers and White Sox brawl in Chicago. 16 players will be suspended.

2004: Andres Torres of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2007: The Boston Red Sox complete their first sweep of the New York Yankees in Fenway Park in 17 years. Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek hit consecutive home runs, making it the fourth instance in major league history that four straight hitters have gone deep.
The victim for all four gopher balls is Chase Wright, who ties the major league record for home runs allowed in an inning. Paul Foytack in 1963 had been the only prior pitcher to allow four straight homers in an inning.

2008: John Smoltz becomes the 16th major league pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters. The 40-year-old Braves hurler gets Felipe Lopez swinging on a 2-2 offering in the 3rd for his 3,000th K. He is the 6th-quickest to the mark in terms of innings pitched (3,386). Smoltz fans 10 in 7 innings in this win, showing that age has not yet caught up to him.

2008: Magglio Ord??ez and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back solo home runs, and a 2-run shot by Ramon Santiago caps a 5-run 3rd inning in a 10-2 win over Texas.

2009: The Milwaukee Brewers sent Jason Tyner to the Detroit Tigers as part of a conditional deal.

2010: Former major league manager Kevin Kennedy, now working as a broadcaster for the Tampa Bay Rays, is suddenly thrust into the limelight, as he intervenes to stop a deranged man who threatens to blow up a flight between Los Angeles, CA and Tampa, FL. Kennedy is one of ten passengers who subdue the madman as the Delta Air Lines flight is diverted to Albuquerque, NM.

2012: The Rangers edge the Tigers, 3 - 2, on a controversial squeeze bunt in the 11th inning. The bases are loaded with no one out when Alberto Gonzalez squares up and lays the ball down right in front of him; it bounces and glances off his right knee, but the umpires miss it and the play is allowed to stand in spite of Detroit manager Jim Leyland's protests. After the game, home plate umpire Tim Welke will admit he missed the call and should have declared the play a foul ball. Thad Weber is charged with the loss in his major league debut as a result.

2016: Paul Carey honored with a pregame tribute at Comerica Park.

In the 5th, Matt Boyd throws a pitch behind Miguel Sano, who comes to blows with C James McCann while P Matthew Boyd is ejected by umpire Mike Everitt, along with Sano. The Tigers, who also place 1B Miguel Cabrera on the disabled list before the game, win the game, 5 - 4.
