April 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: The Detroit Tigers signed Billy Lush as a free agent.

1904: The Detroit Tigers purchased Bobby Lowe from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1906: Ty Cobb goes 2-for-4 with a key double in the 10th: Tigers win 2-1 in Chicago.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DboSIKhXUAQlP1V.jpg

1922: Charlie Robertson of the Chicago White Sox pitches a 2 - 0 perfect game against the Detroit Tigers.

1923: The New York Yankees signed Lou Gehrig as a free agent.

1936: The St. Louis Browns traded Jack Burns to the Detroit Tigers for Chief Hogsett.

1942: The Brooklyn Dodgers purchased Schoolboy Rowe from the Detroit Tigers.

1945: Tigers trade for Roy Cullenbine. He will start in right field the rest of the season and help the Tigers win their second world championship. Cullenbine still holds the major league record for consecutive games drawing a walk as a batter, with 22 in 1947. Scouted for the Tigers in the 50s. Attended Al Kaline's number retirement as a previous wearer of #6. Cullenbine holds the Tigers franchise record for walks in a season, with 137 that year.
His career .408 OBP is 38th all-time, ahead of multiple Hall of Famers including Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, & Hank Aaron.

1946: Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians strikes out 11 and pitches his second of three career no-hitters, his first since returning from a three-and-a-half year stint in World War II. Feller defeats the New York Yankees, 1 - 0.

1952: Ted Williams plays his final game before leaving for military duty in Korea. In his last at-bat on "Ted Williams Day" at Fenway Park, he blasts a game-winning, two-run home run against Dizzy Trout of the Detroit Tigers. The home run gives the Red Sox a 5 - 3 victory.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D3ZE1FKW0AAmM_h.jpg

1957: The Detroit Tigers traded Jack Phillips to the Boston Red Sox for Karl Olson.

1958: Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox becomes the tenth major league player to tally 1,000 extra-base hits in the 10 - 4 loss to the Kansas City Athletics at Fenway Park.

1961: Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants hits four home runs against the Milwaukee Braves in the Giants' 14 - 4 victory at County Stadium.

1967: Steve Barber and Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles combine on a no-hitter, but still lose the game to the Detroit Tigers, 2 - 1. A wild Barber gives up 10 walks in eight and one-third innings before giving way to Miller, who pitches one-third of an inning. Tigers become the first team in American League history to win a game without a hit.

1968: A 3-run homer by Ramon Webster in the top of the first is Tigers' starter Earl Wilson's only mistake: Tigers lose 3-1 to the athletics.

1969: Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds strikes out 13 en route to a 10 - 0 no-hitter over the Houston Astros at Crosley Field. Bobby Tolan has four RBI in support of Maloney, who records his second career no-hitter after pitching a ten-inning masterpiece against the Cubs in 1965.

1970: Chicago Cubs outfielder Billy Williams becomes the first player in National League history to play 1,000 consecutive games in the 9 - 2 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Fulton County Stadium.

1984: Tigers finish April with a record of 18-2: they could go .500 the rest of the season and finish with 88 wins.

1987: Matt Nokes hits a grand slam and Dave Bergman hits a 2-run home run to power the Tigers to a 12-4 win in Anaheim. The Tigers finish the month 9-12, a shaky start to their '87 campaign.

1988: Tigers beat the Mariners 4-3 on a walk-off single by Alan Trammell that scores Tom Brookens in the bottom of the 12th inning.

1994: The Pittsburgh Pirates purchased Lance Parrish from the Detroit Tigers.

1994: Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Joe Carter finishes April with 31 RBI to set a major league record for the month. Colorado Rockies first baseman Andres Galarraga finishes with 30 RBI to set a National League record.

1997: Tino Martinez, who got off to a painfully slow start with the Yankees last season, finishes April with 34 RBI to set a major league record for the month.

2000: Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks defeats the Chicago Cubs, 6 - 0, as he becomes only the third pitcher in major league history to win six games in April.

2005: The Detroit Tigers signed Gorkys Hernandez as an amateur free agent.

2005: Major league players are asked by Commissioner Bud Selig to agree to a 50-game suspension for the first offense, a 100-game suspension for the second offense and a lifelong ban after the third offense for the use of steroids. In addition to the harsher "three-strike" rule, the commissioner is also seeking a ban on amphetamines.

2008: The Detroit Tigers traded Jason Grilli to the Colorado Rockies for Zach Simons (minors).

2010: Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch both hit their first major league home run in the 4th inning as Detroit beats the Angels, 10 - 6. Another rookie, Austin Jackson, goes 5 for 5 for Detroit. Sizemore's dinger follows one by Gerald Laird, while Boesch's is a grand slam during the 8-run inning.

2011: Former Negro Leagues infielder Emilio Navarro dies at 105 in his native Puerto Rico. He was the oldest living professional baseball player at the time of his death.

2011: Miguel Cabrera hits a homer and a double, and receives 2 intentional walks, but Tigers lose in 13 innings to the indians 3 - 2.

2014: The Dodgers win the 10,000th game in franchise history when they defeat the Twins, 6 - 4, in an interleague game.

May 1 in Tigers and mlb history:

1884: In American Association action, Toledo Blue Stockings catcher Moses Fleetwood Walker becomes the first black to play in the major leagues during a game against the Louisville Eclipse team.

1898: The Board of Discipline of the National Baseball League adopts a set of rules to suppress rowdy ball playing. John T. Brush will later say that the resolution, which he proposed, "has worked like a charm."

1901: Herm McFarland of the Chicago White Sox hits the first grand slam in American League history in a 19 - 9 victory over the Detroit Tigers. His teammate Dummy Hoy also hits a grand slam, in a contest which features Detroit committing 12 errors, 10 by the infield, to set another AL record, which Chicago will tie on May 6, 1903, against the Tigers.

1911: Ty Cobb has 3 steals, including one of home after being caught in a rundown, in a 14-5 win vs Cleveland.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C9JDAw2XYAAPu9D.jpg

1912: George Sisler, a freshman at the University of Michigan, strikes out 20 in seven innings. Sisler will start his Hall of Fame career in 1915 with the St. Louis Browns, but will gain his fame as a hitter, not as a pitcher.

1925: The Philadelphia Athletics introduce another future Hall of Famer, 17-year-old catcher Jimmie Foxx, who pinch-hits a single in the 9 - 4 loss to the Washington Senators.

1926: Legendary pitcher Satchel Paige makes his debut in the Negro Southern League. Paige, at 19 years of age, leads Chattanooga to a 5 - 4 win over Birmingham.

1937: Indianapolis (American Association) purchased Bob Logan from the Detroit Tigers.

1951: On Mother's Day, Mickey Mantle hits the first home run of his career off Randy Gumpert in an 8 - 3 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park. In the same game, former Negro Leagues star Minnie Mi?oso becomes the first black player in the history of the White Sox franchise. Mi?oso belts a home run in his first at-bat for the team off Vic Raschi.

1955: Cleveland Indians starters show up for a "pitching clinic" during a doubleheader sweep of the Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Stadium. Veteran Bob Feller pitches hitless ball for 6+ innings and hurls his major league record 12th one-hitter in a 2 - 0 victory in the opener, and in the nitecap rookie Herb Score strikes out the first nine batters (for a total of 16) en route to a 2 - 1 four-hit victory.

1959: At the age of 39, Early Wynn of the Chicago White Sox pitches a one-hit shutout, strikes out 14, and hits a double and home run for a 1 - 0 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Comiskey Park.

1965: Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Tommy Davis breaks his ankle sliding into second base. Although Davis will go on to play another 11 seasons, he will never recapture the excellence he displayed prior to the injury. In 1962, Davis led the National League with a .346 batting average and 153 RBI.

1968: Willie Horton's sac fly in the bottom of the 8th puts the Tigers ahead, and Denny McLain finishes out a complete game for his 3rd win. #Tigers win 3-2 over twins to improve to 13-5.

1975: Hank Aaron collects four hits and two RBI in the Brewers' 17 - 3 win over Detroit. This brings his career RBI total to 2,211, breaking Babe Ruth's published record of 2,209. On February 3, 1976, the Records Committee will revise Ruth's total to 2,204. In actuality, Aaron set the record with 2,205 on April 18th.

1976: Willie Horton hits a 2-run homer: his 10th straight game with an RBI. #Tigers pound White Sox 10-1 in Chicago.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C-gIvXiWsAAMq5o.jpg

1984: Tigers wallop Red Sox 11-2, Barbaro Garbey 4 rbi, Kuntz 3 rbi, and Chet Lemon with a home run and 4 rbi. Milt Wilcox improves to 3 and 0.

1984: Dwight Gooden becomes the first teenager to strike out a least ten batters in a game since Bert Blyleven accomplished the feat in 1970. The Mets' 19-year-old phenom, who will set a major league rookie record with 276 strikeouts, will have a total of 15 double-digit strikeout games this year.

1990: The Detroit Tigers returned Johnny Paredes (earlier draft pick) to the Montreal Expos.
1990: The Detroit Tigers returned Steve Wapnick (earlier draft pick) to the Toronto Blue Jays.

1991: The Tigers beat the Royals 13-7. Rob Deer hit a grand slam and drove in 5 on the day. Lou Whitaker went 3-3 with a walk, home run, 2 RBI & 3 runs scored.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D5fWrYwWwAAlL1u.jpg

1991: Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics surpasses Lou Brock as the major league career stolen base leader with his 939th steal in a 7 - 4 victory over the New York Yankees. Henderson breaks the record in the 4th inning, when he steals third base against catcher Matt Nokes.

1991: Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers pitches the seventh no-hitter of his major league career. The 44-year-old Ryan, who defeats the Toronto Blue Jays, 3 - 0, becomes the oldest pitcher to hurl a no-hit game. His masterpiece includes 16 strikeouts and only two walks. It is also the 209th time he has struck out 10 or more in a game, and the 26th time putting 15 or more down on strikes.

1992: Rickey Henderson garners his 1,000th stolen base in the 1st inning of the Athletics' 7 - 6 victory over Detroit at Tiger Stadium.

1995: Major League Baseball owners and the Major League Umpires Association reach an agreement on a five-year contract, ending the walk-out. Regular umpires will return to work on May 3rd.

2002: The Detroit Tigers signed Chris Peters as a free agent.

2008: Miguel Cabrera hits a 2-run home run and an RBI triple in the Tigers' 8-4 win at Yankee Stadium.

2010: Johnny Damon's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th gives the Tigers a 3-2 win over the Angels.

2015: The Detroit Tigers released Casper Wells.

2016: Nick Castellanos' 3-run HR & Jerrod Saltalamacchia's RBI double gives the #Tigers their 5th straight win, 6 - 5 over the twins.
