Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

May 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1904: At Huntington Avenue Grounds, Cy Young of the Boston Americans hurls the second of his three no-hitters, a 3 - 0 perfect game against the Philadelphia Athletics and Rube Waddell. Young will eventually complete 24 straight hitless innings, still the record, and 45 shutout innings in a row, a record until broken by Jack Coombs' 53 scoreless frames in 1910.

1906: Recovering from a case of diphtheria contracted before the season, Christy Mathewson makes his first appearance of the year for the New York Giants. He pitches seven solid innings against the Boston Beaneaters, allowing seven hits before being relieved by Joe McGinnity, who allows three runs in the 9th inning to turn a 4 - 3 lead into a 6 - 4 defeat.

1922: Facing the Detroit Tigers, Bill Bayne of the St. Louis Browns pitches a no-hitter into the 9th inning. Detroit manager Ty Cobb then sends up five straight pinch hitters, the first of whom breaks up the no-hitter. One of the pinch hitters Cobb inserts is Bob "Fatty" Fothergill, who bats for him and strikes out, becoming the only man ever to pinch hit for Cobb. The Browns win.

1925: Detroit Tigers player/manager Ty Cobb hits three home runs, a double and two singles and 16 total bases, to lead his team to an 14 - 8 victory against the St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park.

1925: Everett Scott of the New York Yankees is benched, ending his streak of 1,307 consecutive games played that started in 1918 while playing for the Boston Red Sox. Scott, who gives way to Pee Wee Wanninger at shortstop, has the longest playing streak to that point, but his record will be broken by Lou Gehrig.

1935: At Braves Field, young pitcher Dizzy Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals faces the Boston Braves and 40-year-old veteran Babe Ruth. Dean walks Ruth in his first at-bat, then with two strikes on the Bambino, waves his outfielders back and throws a fastball down the middle that Ruth misses for a strikeout. Dean wins the game, 7 - 0, and in his first at bat, hits a home run over Ruth's head in left field. Dean will face Ruth again on May 19th, holding him hitless again, and winning that game as well.

1946 - Leon Day, pitching for the Newark Eagles, throws an Opening Day no-hitter against the Philadelphia Stars, winning, 2 - 0. It is the last 9-inning no-hitter in the Negro Leagues.

1948: The Detroit Tigers purchased Marlin Stuart from the St. Louis Browns.

1949: Charlie Gehringer, great second baseman of the Detroit Tigers between 1924 and 1942, is selected to the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association of America with 159 votes on 187 ballots. The Tigers great 2nd Baseman was a career .320 hitter with seven 200 hit seasons, scoring 1,775 runs and hitting 574 doubles, and the A.L. MVP in 1937.

1987: The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Balvino Galvez to the Detroit Tigers for Orlando Mercado.

1991: The Detroit Tigers released Danny Leon.

1993: The Detroit Tigers released Mike Garcia.

2009: The Dodgers tie a post-1900 major league record with their 12th straight win at home to open the season when they beat Arizona, 3 - 1. Detroit is the only other team to win its first twelve games at home, in 1911.

2013: Justin Verlander makes a bid for his third career no-hitter, keeping the Astros hitless into the 7th inning, before allowing a one-out single to Carlos Pena; he gives up another single to Carlos Corporan but gets out of the inning with a double play ground ball and then leaves. The Tigers win easily, 9 - 0. Verlander is now 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA.

2017: Kirk Gibson delivers the commencement address and receives and honorary doctorate at Michigan State University.

Grayson Greiner Compares His Dingers.
Grayson Greiner hit the first home run of his brief big-league career two weeks ago Friday. He then banged out number-two the following Tuesday. What did the blasts have in common? I asked the Detroit Tigers catcher that very question a day after the second dinger.

?They were similar pitches,? Greiner told me. ?They were kind of down in the zone, and middle-in-ish. Both fastballs. One was off Ryan Burr, a right-hander for the White Sox, and yesterday?s was off Chris Sale. The one off the righty was on a 2-2 count, and the one off Sale was 1-1 count. I think the counts being even is a reason they were both home runs. I wasn?t sure what was coming, and that made me stay back a little bit longer, instead of getting out front. I was in a good, strong hitting position.?

Greiner and Burr know each other, having played summer ball together when they were collegians. Baseball friendships being what they are, Greiner received a text after the April 19 game saying, ?Congrats on the first homer. I wish it wasn?t off of me.? He didn?t hear from Sale after taking him deep. ?He probably doesn?t know who I am,? was Greiner?s guess as to why that didn?t happen.

The fact that Sale is Sale, and Fenway is Fenway, made Greiner?s second-ever home run even more meaningful than his first.

?I would have to say yesterday?s was cooler,? opined the former South Carolina Gamecock. ?As a kid, everyone dreams of hitting a home run over the Green Monster ? it?s probably the most iconic structure in our game ? and to do it off of one of the best pitchers in the game over the last several years was a thrill. Plus, we got the win. That made it even more special. When I hit the first one we were down by six runs.?

Greiner has since added a third round-tripper to his resume. It came off White Sox lefty Carlos Rondon in a game the Tigers lost 12-11. Where it ranks compared to his first two is a question I don?t have an answer for.

Last Sunday?s column led with Daniel Norris, who shared the unique relationship he has with the pitches in his repertoire. Left on the cutting-room floor was his answer to something I asked as our conversation wound down: What is the good question reporters never ask you?

?Are you having fun?? was the Detroit Tigers southpaw?s response. ?I am having fun. We?re sitting here in a beautiful park [Fenway Park] right now, and I get to play baseball. This is such a blessing. No doubt you can get frustrated ? you have good days and bad days ? but I always have fun. I love having fun.?

Norris enjoyed a strong outing this past Wednesday, holding the Phillies to a lone run over five inning. Mitigating the fun-quotient was Detroit?s bullpen coughing up a late lead. Norris got a no-decision.

The Tigers today have recalled RHP Eduardo Jim?nez from Triple A Toledo. He will wear No. 66.
Jimenez will take Drew VerHagen's spot on the 25-man roster. He is already on the 40-man roster, however, so the Tigers still have an open space there.

Career minors: 237.33 IP/ 2.97 ERA/ 1.34 WHIP/ 89 BB/ 230 K
20 games started of 129 games, 40 saves. Hasn’t started since 2013
Missed the 2014 season. 24 Yrs old, from Venezuela. 6 ft 2 in, RHP.

Spent the entire 2018 season with Single A Lakeland, making a career-high 40 appearances…Named to the Florida State League Midseason All-Star Team…Ranked second in the Florida State League with 15 saves and 34 games finished…Appeared in seven games during the month of April, compiling a 0-1 record with four saves, a 0.84 ERA (10.2IP/1ER) and 13 strikeouts…Pitched in eight games with the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League and had a 1-0 record with a 1.32 ERA (13.2IP/2ER) and 12 strikeouts.
Started 2019 in Erie, promoted to Toledo after 3 appearances, and is pitching well right now, which is more than most of the other potential replacement candidates.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast Weekend Edition #4: More dingers, less talking, Miguel. 68 minutes.
Staff writer and editor Brandon Day takes a look around the week?s news in the Tigers? organization.

We?re back with another weekend edition of the BYB Podcast. The Tigers continue to look good some days, and terrible on others, and it all comes back to the starting rotation. However, Spencer Turnbull has really given the Tigers another strong rotation option, while Ronny Rodriguez continues to fill a void offensively with a red-hot start to the season.

We?ll look at some rather unnecessary comments from Miguel Cabrera on his lack of home run power and who is to blame. Probably the big man should just stop talking to the media if even the most obvious questions elicit this kind of nonsense as a response.

Finally, it?s been a very nice opening month for a lot of the Tigers? top prospects. We?ll talk Mize, Manning, and Alex Faedo, mention a few sleepers making waves, and process the current state of the rebuild.
