Tigers? Miguel Cabrera diagnosed with ?chronic? knee injury.

According to reports on Tuesday, after visiting four different specialists, Cabrera was presented with the option of a season-ending knee surgery, but was told by doctors he could continue to play if he desired, and treat the knee as a day-to-day concern. Cabrera, naturally, opted to continue his season. He apparently said, ?I?m done with surgeries.?

When reporters asked Tigers head athletic trainer Doug Teter about the injury, he did not seem overly concerned about its severity, but did say it would be something that would be a part of Cabrera?s life for the remainder of his playing career.

?The only advice I can say to young kids is take care of their body when they have to," Miguel Cabrera said. "When they have something, stop playing for a week and come back. Don?t play through pain, because you?re going to pay the price later.?

June 5 in Tigers and mlb history:

1916: In Cleveland, Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox shuts out the Indians, 5 - 0, on five hits, and has now thrown 24 straight scoreless innings. He is 2 for 3 at the plate.

1923: Birmingham (Southern Association) purchased Roy Moore from the Detroit Tigers.

1936: Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,700th consecutive game, as the Yankees beat the Indians, 4 - 3. By May 2, 1939 when Gehrig takes himself out of the Yankee's lineup he will have set a ML record of 2,130 consecutive games played.
A record that will be broken by Cal Ripken's 2,632.

1949: Commissioner Happy Chandler lifts the ban on all players who jumped to the Mexican League, starting in 1946. Only Sal Maglie will make a significant mark after the exile. Lou Klein will be the first jumper to make a major-league box score, successfully pinch-hitting on June 16.

1954: Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams catches pneumonia, sidelining him for three weeks.

1957: In Jersey City, Don Drysdale pitches the first of his 49 major-league shutouts, as the Dodgers win, 4 - 0, over the Cubs.

1959: In a 10 - 5 loss to the Cubs, Pittsburgh's Dick Stuart becomes, in the words of Les Biederman, "the first player in the 50-year history of Forbes Field to ride a ball over the centerfield fence, a few feet to the left of the flagpole."
While Stuart is perhaps the first major leaguer to literally clear the wall, mention must be made of both Negro League great Josh Gibson, who did it twice, in 1930 and 1946, and Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby, who actually hit the flagpole on April 24, 1924.
Biederman continues: "Stuart faced Glen Hobbie with Smoky Burgess aboard and rifled a shot straight over George Altman's head. Altman raced back and watched the flight of the ball. It disappeared over the 457-foot mark on the centerfield fence, longest part of Forbes Field. Nobody could quite accurately estimate how far the ball traveled and by how far it cleared the wall. Altman guessed 25 to 30 feet but Walt Moryn, who had a side view of the ball from left field, went on record that the ball cleared the wall by about 40 to 50 feet."

1961: The Detroit Tigers traded Chuck Cottier to the Washington Senators for Hal Woodeshick.

1963: At Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, Mickey Mantle fractures a bone in his left foot and suffers ligament and cartilage damage to the left knee running into the chain link fence chasing down a Brooks Robinson drive. Mantle will be out for 61 games.

1967: Al Kaline appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

1969: The Detroit Tigers drafted Doug Konieczny in the 23rd round of the 1969 amateur draft, but was not signed.

1970: Al Kaline singles for his 2,500th career hit,in a 4 - 2 loss to the 'effin athletics.
He will finish his career with 3,007.

1977: The Dodgers retire former manager Walter Alston's uniform number, 24, on Old-Timer's Day.

1979: The Detroit Tigers drafted Rick Leach in the 1st round (13th pick) of the 1979 amateur draft.
1979: The Detroit Tigers drafted Mike Warren in the 12th round of the 1979 amateur draft.

1979: A would-be home run by former Tiger Willie Horton bounces off the Kingdome roof for a single. John Hiller cites divine intervention.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C-vxYhAWsAAlOk5.jpg:large

1981: Houston Astros pitcher Nolan Ryan passes Early Wynn as major leagues' all-time walks leader, walking two batters in a 3 - 0 win over the Mets to raise his total to 1,777. Ryan also strikes out 10 batters while pitching a five-hitter.

1988: The Detroit Tigers signed Dwayne Murphy as a free agent.

1989: The Toronto SkyDome opens, but the Blue Jays lose 5 - 3 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Baseball's newest and most modern stadium features a $100 million fully retractable roof, a hotel, the world's largest video display board, and a Hard Rock Cafe.

1989: The Detroit Tigers drafted Mike Garcia in the 55th round of the 1989 amateur draft.

1994: In Detroit, the Twins' Chuck Knoblauch leads off the game with a homer off Mike Moore, then adds a second long ball in the 7th. Not to be outdone, the Tigers' lead-off hitter, Tony Phillips goes deep against Scott Erickson in his first at-bat, and also add a second homer, in the 8th inning. It is the first time in major league history this has happened, and the feat won't be repeated until August 13, 2013, when Brad Miller and Ben Zobrist are the two protagonists. Detroit wins the game, 5 - 3.

1997: With the first overall selection in the amateur draft, the Tigers select pitcher Matt Anderson out of Rice University. It’s the first overall #1 pick the Tigers have ever had in the June draft. Armed with a 100-MPH fastball, Anderson will be in the Detroit bullpen the next year.

The major league record is five, set by Andre Dawson, in a 16-inning game, on May 22, 1990.

2008: Chipper Jones hits his 400th career home run, becoming the third switch-hitter to reach this level. Eddie Murray and Mickey Mantle had reached the mark previously. Ricky Nolasco gives up the homer. Jones has a four-hit game to move his average to .418, the top mark in the majors at this point of the season.
