Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

July 18 in Tigers and mlb history:

1902: The Detroit Tigers loaned Harry Arndt to the Baltimore Orioles.
1902: The Detroit Tigers loaned Sport McAllister to the Baltimore Orioles.

1906: Ty Cobb, suffering from stomach cramps, leaves the Tigers and returns to Detroit. He will undergo an operation for ulcers, and be out of the lineup until September.

1913: Christy Mathewson finally yields a base on balls, ending a record string of 68 walkless innings pitched. Ed Konetchy draws the pass in the 8th. Matty's record won't be topped until Bill Fischer in 1962.

1916: At Boston, Babe Ruth pitches the Red Sox to a 4 - 3 win over the Browns. In the 3rd, Ruth triples and then scores on a infield grounder, bowling over St. Louis C Hank Severeid and knocking him unconscious. Grover Hartley replaces the injured Severeid.

1921: Babe Ruth hits the 139th home run of his career, passing Roger Connor to become baseball's all-time home run leader, a record he would hold on to for 19,257 days.
The blast off Bert Cole at Navin Field in Detroit, MI is estimated by some to have traveled upwards of 575 feet, the longest in major league history.

1927: The greatest of the Detroit Tigers now with the Philadelphia A's, Ty Cobb makes his 4,000th hit ironically a double off Sam Gibson of Detroit. Detroit wins 5 - 3 over Lefty Grove. Research will later reveal that he had two fewer hits than was thought at the time, and that number 4,000 actually three days later, on July 21st.

1930: The Chicago White Sox selected Bob Fothergill off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1947: Freddie Hutchinson of the Tigers shuts out the Yankees 8 - 0, stopping their winning streak at 19.

1959: The Tigers drop game one to the Orioles 5 - 2, their 13th loss in 15 games, then win the nitecap 2 - 0, despite getting just two hits off Hoyt Wilhelm. Hoyt allows two singles, but his knuckler proves elusive to Joe Ginsberg, who allows four passed balls to tie the American League record held by Gus Triandos and two others. O's catchers Ginsberg and Triandos will set the modern major-league record for passed balls this season with 49.

1961: A day after the Georgia Peach passed away, at Busch Stadium Bill White ties Ty Cobb's 49-year old record by collecting 14 hits in consecutive doubleheaders as the Cardinal first baseman goes 3 for 4 in both games of a doubleheader sweep over the Cubs. Yesterday, the future National League president had gone 8 for 10 in twin bill action also against Chicago.

1961: Mickey Mantle poles two homers off rookie Joe McClain to pace New York to a 5 - 3 win over the Senators. In pre-game ceremonies, Mantle teamed with New York Congressman Eddie Dooley to win the homer-hitting contest against other Congressional-player duos.

1961: Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock and Joe Torre of the Braves startle the Reds with a triple steal in the 6th inning. For Aaron, it is his first steal of home.

1969: Willie Horton hits a 2-run home run, and ties Mickey Stanley's American League record with 11 outfield putouts. Denny McLain shuts out the indians 4 - 0.

1970: San Francisco's Willie Mays, at the age of 39, strokes a single off Montreal's Mike Wegener for his 3,000th hit. Mays' safety comes in his 2,639th game and he joins Hank Aaron, who stroked his 3,000th a month earlier. Aaron's was hit in his 2,460th game. The Giants coast to a 10 - 1 victory.

1975: In a 9 - 3 win over the Kansas City Royals, Boston's Jim Rice clouts a tremendous homer over the CF wall at Fenway Park, to the right of the flag pole, just the 6th player to accomplish this feat. Owner Tom Yawkey calls it the longest shot he's ever seen at Fenway. The others: Detroit's Hank Greenberg, on May 22, 1937; Boston's Jimmie Foxx, on August 12, 1937; Yankee Bill Skowron, on April 20, 1957; Boston's Carl Yastrzemski, on May 16, 1970; Brewer Bobby Mitchell, on September 29, 1973.

1986: Jack Morris throws his third straight complete game shutout, holding the Rangers to 2 hits in a 5-0 win at Tiger Stadium. Morris has pitched 31 straight scoreless innings.

1987: the Tigers beat the Mariners 7-0. Frank Tanana pitched a 3-hit shutout without walking anybody, facing only 29 batters. Alan Trammell & Darnell Coles homered.

1990: Arbitrator George Nicolau rules in favor of the Players Association saying that the 26 major league owners colluded and were aware of a databank that detailed 1987 salary offers. The owners will be forced to pay significant damages to the affected players.

1994: The Major League Baseball Players Association rejects the owners' salary cap proposal as baseball moves a step closer to a strike.

1997: The Mariners, seeking pitching help, trade Scott Sanders (3-6) and two minor leaguers (pitcher Dean Crow and 3B Carlos Villalobos) to the Detroit Tigers for right-handers Omar Olivares (5-6) and Felipe Lira (5-7).

1998: The Oakland Athletics traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Bip Roberts. The Oakland Athletics sent Jason Wood (July 18, 1998) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1998: Alan Trammell is inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.

1999: On Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium, David Cone becomes the 16th pitcher in major league history and the third Yankee to toss a perfect game, beating the Expos, 6 - 0. In pre-game ceremonies, Don Larsen throws out the ceremonial first pitch to Yogi, commemorating his 1956 World Series perfect game. Coincidentally, these are the only two perfect games ever pitched in interleague games.

2000: The Tigers purchase veteran 1B Hal Morris from the Reds.

2001: In response to the grievance filed by the umpires earlier in the week, the commissioner's office announces pitch counts will not be used as an evaluation technique.

2001: Roger Cedeno hits a double, triple, and 2 home runs in a 12-4 win over the Yankees at Comerica Park.
During the game, players notify stadium security when a fan, reaching for a foul ball, drops and then retrieves a gun on the field at Comerica Park. It turns out to be a Glock pistol belonging to an embarrassed off-duty three-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department, who had his weapon fall out of its holster as he went for the ball.

2017: The Detroit Tigers traded J.D. Martinez to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Sergio Alcantara (minors), Jose King (minors) and Dawel Lugo (minors).

Motor City Bengals Tigers Blog Podcast: Detroit Tigers trade rumors, Analyzing Castellanos. 28 minutes.

In this episode, Mike and Luke discuss the growing trade rumors surrounding the Tigers, including more speculation on where Matthew Boyd could end up. Could it be San Diego, Houston, or New York? Who knows at this point.

Also up for discussion is the relationship between the Detroit Tigers and Nick Castellanos. Could it be more beneficial for Detroit to hold onto the right fielder for the rest of the season instead of trading him?

Finally, the guys take a guess at whether or not this 2019 Tigers team will end up as one of the worst teams of the modern era.

TWICE AS NICE.
Totally Tigers

Every day, the trade deadline gets closer and closer. And all the same names continue to be mentioned as Tiger players who could be traded by the end of the month.

Today, our writers discuss the likes of Matthew Boyd, Shane Greene, Nicholas Castellanos and Joe Jimenez; all with varying degrees of trade interest.

Holly and Kurt will give their answers to the following question regarding the Tigers and their trade possibilities.

Let?s take a look at this week?s question for our writers.

As we all know, the Tigers have announced that Nick Castellanos, Shane Greene, Matthew Boyd and Joe Jimenez are on the trading block. What should we expect to happen to each of them by the end of the month trading deadline?

The Tigers? Nicholas Castellanos is likely a more realistic trade candidate than Bauer, but the right fielder suggested Thursday he?s not fully convinced a deal will come together before the deadline. Castellanos said that ?I wouldn?t be shocked if I don?t get traded. Everybody thought I?d get traded last trade deadline. Everybody thought I?d get traded this offseason. There were people who thought I?d get traded in spring training.? With an extension between the non-contending Tigers and Castellanos appearing to be out of the question, it?s highly probable the team will part with him this month unless there?s no interest from elsewhere. Regardless, Castellanos indicated that he has made peace with whatever happens and is more focused on what happens on the field, where he has been on an offensive tear of late.

Detroit Tigers Trade Rumors: Twins, Dodgers interested in Tigers? arms.
MCBTB

Jon Morosi:
Dodgers showing continued interest in #Tigers closer Shane Greene, sources say. @anthonyfenech initially reported the Dodgers had inquired on him.

As reported by MLB.com?s Jon Paul Morosi on Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to show interest in Shane Greene. Although with his similarities to current Dodger reliever Joe Kelly, Morosi points out, LA might be somewhat hesitant to add Greene to the bullpen.

Jason Beck of MLB.com reports that the Dodgers, along with the Yankees, Braves, Rays, and Reds all had scouts in attendance at Thursday night?s game between the Indians and Detroit Tigers in Cleveland. With Matthew Boyd starting on the mound for the Tigers, the scouts may have been there to take a look at Cleveland?s starter, Trevor Bauer, as well.

Back to Jon Paul Morosi, the MLB.com reporter also hints at the fact that Detroit could look within the AL Central as the Twins have interest Boyd and Greene. Morosi brings up that the Tigers would most likely ask for a very hefty return, especially for Boyd, from Minnesota in order to send one or both of the team?s top arms to a club within the division.
