Detroit Lions filling coaching positions with young former players.
Recently retired veterans like Leon Washington are taking the next step in their football careers.
Mike Rothstein at ESPN wrote a solid piece Thursday on former players bringing their experience and knowledge to the Detroit Lions as young coaches. The former players on the current Detroit staff mentioned are:

Former defensive back Steve Gregory, who recovered the infamous butt-fumble, joined the organization as a defensive assistant in March 2018

Former pro center Hank Fraley, recently an offensive line coach at UCLA, became an offensive line assistant coach for the Lions in February 2018.

Former guard Billy Yates, a participant in the William Clay Ford Minority Coaching Assistantship program since March 2018

Former running back Leon Washington, who was brought on as the 2019 participant in the WCF program this past March.

The Lions have essentially extended the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship to a yearlong position rather than just a spot during training camp. That's an important thing to do to give young coaches a foot in the door.

July 20 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: Frank Schulte hits for the cycle to help the Cubs tip the Phils, 4 - 3. "Wildfire" will end the year as the first player ever to top the 20 mark in doubles, triples, homers, and stolen bases. Only Willie Mays in 1957 will match him this century; the feat will be matched twice in 2007, by Curtis Granderson and Jimmy Rollins.

1913: The Tigers send 38-year-old George Mullin (1-6), a five times 20-game winner, to Washington. Mullin pitched a no-hitter a year ago on his birthday.

1916: The Tigers beat the 2nd-place Red Sox 3 - 2, in 13 innings when Ty Cobb scores on a Ralph Young single.
Cobb reaches on an infield chop and a throwing error by Babe Ruth, who takes over for Rube Foster in the 9th with the score tied 2 - 2.

1922: At Sportsman's Park, Rogers Hornsby belts a two-out 9th inning home run with two men on the give the Cards a 7 - 6 win over Boston. It is the Rajah's 25th home run of the year, breaking Gavvy Cravath's National League home run mark (post-1900). In two weeks, Hornsby will break the record of 27 homers set in 1884 by Chicago's Ned Williamson.

1938: Johnny Mize of the Cardinals has three home runs in a game for the second time this season, in a game against the Giants.

1942: The Philadelphia Athletics purchased Eric McNair from the Detroit Tigers.

1944: 16 years after he retired from baseball holding 90 Major League and American League records, Ty Cobb appears at the Pacific Coast League All-Star Game.

1947: Tigers set an attendance record of 58,369 for a doubleheader against the Yankees at Briggs (Tiger) Stadium. Tigers sweep the doubleheader, including a 12-11 win in 11 innings in Game 2.

1947: Hank Thompson plays 2B and Willard Brown CF for the St. Louis Browns against the Red Sox. It marks the first time that two black players appear in the same major league lineup.

1948: An unprecedented 10-game suspension and $500 fine of an umpire, the veteran Bill McGowan, is announced by American League President Will Harridge following a confrontation in the Washington-Cleveland game. Tired of Senator pitcher Ray Scarborough continually complaining about strike calls, McGowan threw a ball-and-strike indicator at him. After that, he ejects Nats manager Joe Kuhel and several coaches. Kuhel also lodged a protest after yesterday's 11th-inning loss when Ed Stewart was thrown out at home in the 10th. When Stewart argued the call with plate ump Joe Paparella, McGowan threw a ball at Stewart.

1958: Jim Bunning of the Tigers pitches a 3 - 0 no-hitter over the Red Sox and strikes out 12. Only two walks and a hit batsman mar Bunning's performance as he wins his sixth game in seven decisions (8-6). Only one hard hit ball by Ted Williams was caught on the run with the usual amazing catch by RF Al Kaline.

1961: Rocky Colavito hits 2 home runs in a 15-8 win over the Orioles. #Tigers score 8 in the 7th. Tigers retake first place.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DEeiOoUWAAAhR9q.jpg

1962: The Detroit Tigers purchased Don Buddin from the Houston Colt .45's.

1965: Mel Stottlemyre of the Yankees becomes the first pitcher to hit an inside-the-park grand slam since Deacon Phillippe did it for the Pirates in 1910. Stottlemyre's bases-loaded drive in the 5th off Bill Monbouquette assures him a 6 - 3 victory over the Red Sox.

1969: San Francisco's Gaylord Perry connects for his first hit of the year, and his first major league homer, to beat the Dodgers, 7 - 3. The victim of Perry's dinger is Claude Osteen.
Last year, Alvin Dark had remarked to sports writer Harry Jupiter about Perry's hitting, "They'll put a man on the moon before he hits a home run." Perry's homer comes about 20 minutes after the club house receives word that Neil Armstrong has set foot on the moon.

1976: Hank Aaron hits the 755th, and last, home run of his career, connecting off Dick Drago of the California Angels. Jerry Augustine wins for the Brewers, 6 - 2.

1976: Mark Fidrych improves to 11-2 in a 8 - 3 win over the Twins: his 12th complete game in 13 starts.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_2tAptWkAADVl6.jpg

1979: The Montreal Expos traded a player to be named later and cash to the Detroit Tigers for Rusty Staub.
The Montreal Expos sent Randall Schafer (minors) (December 3, 1979) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1984: Tigers beat the Rangers 3 - 1. Dave Rozema wins his 7th of the year.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CnbsZJQXgAUn-dm.jpg

1987: Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly ties a major league mark as he is credited with 22 putouts in one game. The feat was last accomplished in the American League by Hal Chase in 1906.

1998: The Detroit Tigers released Billy Ripken.

1998: The Tigers take the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees by a 4 - 3 score in 17 innings.
The New Yorkers bounce back to take the nightcap by the identical score. The 26 innings take nearly nine hours to play.

2000: Major League Baseball offers to rehire 10 of the 22 umpires let go last September. The offer stands only as part of a new labor contract, and only if the umpires' old union agrees to settle its grievance with baseball.

2011: The Tigers send a couple of Class A players Antonio Cruz (minors) and Julio Rodriguez (minors) to Kansas City in return for 3B Wilson Betemit, who has become redundant since top prospect Mike Moustakas was called up last month.
Brandon Inge, Detroit's starter at 3B, is hitting only .177.

2012: Chipper Jones becomes the all-time leader for RBIs by a player who was primarily a third baseman with a two-run single in the 8th inning; he was tied with George Brett at 1,598; Mike Schmidt continues to hold the record for RBI collected when actually playing at the hot corner.

2012: The United States Postal Service issues a set of four commemorative stamps depicting Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Larry Doby, Joe DiMaggio and Willie Stargell. The issuance ceremonies are held in Cooperstown, NY as part of the Hall's annual induction week-end.

2014: The Detroit Tigers released Trevor Crowe.

2016: Justin Verlander strikes out 9, passing Fernando Valenzuela on the all-time strikeout list in a loss to the twins.
JV passed Fernando Valenzuela (2,074), Ryan Dempster (2,075) and Tim Hudson (2,080) in today's start.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY,
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers another way for readers to weigh in on a relevant topic. So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our baseball-lovin? peeps.

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons ( 4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

The Tigers have won only 6 games (through Thursday?s game) since June 5th and are tied with the Orioles for fewest wins (29) in MLB.

With just over 10 more weeks left in the season, where do you expect them to finish in the loss column?

Fewer than the 98 losses of 2017 and 2018.

98 losses again.

Just over 100.

Somewhere between 110 and 119.

Breaking the record of 43-119 they set in 2003.

Setting a new MLB record with over 120 losses.
