When Leyland was a Tigers minor leaguer in the 1960s, he sometimes got to be around the major leaguers in spring training. He didn't dare speak to them, and he didn't expect them to speak to him. He said Al Kaline always was exceptionally nice to him. But Leyland said that if Kaline had asked him to dinner in spring training, "I would have passed out. I'd have been so nervous I couldn't even eat. Now the players all mingle together."
