Alan Trammell had 2,365 hits. Lou Whitaker had 2,369 hits.

On July 26, 1974, Joe Coleman twirled an 11-inning complete-game shutout as the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0. Jim Northrup ended the affair with a walk-off single.

On August 1, 1962, Granny Hamner pitched in both games of a double-header for the Kansas City A?s against the Detroit Tigers. Of the 1,531 games Hamner appeared in during a 17-year career, seven were as a pitcher.

Detroit Tigers observations: If this was Matthew Boyd's farewell, he went out swinging.
Freep

Nicholas Castellanos was scratched prior to the game with abdominal tightness, according to the team. The move was not trade-related, but could be chalked up to the Tigers playing things careful: They deemed Castellanos? absence as ?precautionary? and consider him day-to-day. The Tigers won?t take any chances at this stage of the season, given an injury could prevent them from trading him.

Matthew Boyd shines before Mariners sweep away Tigers.
Detnews

Boyd allowed a run and just three hits, with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings. But there would not be a 'W' next to his name in the box score.

As I alluded to in a previous post;
Interestingly, and perhaps telling, Shane Greene was not used in the bottom of the ninth or 10th inning ? although he did begin to loosen up before the 10th. Manager Ron Gardenhire had said before the game that he would give Greene an inning regardless of the situation. He hadn't pitched since Wednesday.
The Tigers could be close to a deal for Greene.

July 29 in Tigers and mlb history:

1901: At the Polo Grounds, Boston's Kid Nichols and Christy Mathewson square off for a ten-inning shootout, with Boston prevailing, 5 - 4. Matty gives up 11 hits in bringing his record to 15-11.

1910: White Sox OF Patsy Dougherty breaks up Detroit's Ed Summers's no-hitter. Ty Cobb scores from second on an infield single, and the Tigers and Summers win it 1 - 0. It is the fourth time in his 10-year career that the .284 hitter has ruined someone's no-hitter.

1911: At Boston's Huntington Avenue Grounds, 'Smokey' Joe Wood of the Red Sox whiffs twelve Browns en route to a 5 - 0 no-hitter.

1919: At Navin Field, Dutch Leonard decides to pitch around Braggo Roth with two outs in the 9th inning to face Babe Ruth. Although the Boston slugger, who has already reached the Detroit southpaw with two doubles, responds by tying an American League record with his ninth home run of the month and sixteenth of the season, the Tigers prevail, 10 - 8.

1922: The Detroit Tigers purchased Ken Holloway from Augusta (South Atlantic) for $8,000.

1928: The Indians score eight in the 1st and nine in the 2nd in a 24 - 6 win over the Yankees at home. Johnny Hodapp of the Indians becomes the first American League player to get two hits in an inning twice in a game. He strokes 2 singles in both the 2nd and 6th innings of the game. The Yankees' lead shrinks from 11 1/2 games to 6 in one week.

1931: The Detroit Tigers purchased George Quellich from Reading (International).

1955: At Crosley Field, Smoky Burgess hits 3 home runs and drives in nine runs as the Redlegs rout the Pirates, 16 - 5.

1958: Ted Williams hits his 17th career grand slam, tying him for 2nd place with Babe Ruth, and behind Lou Gehrig, who had 23. Williams also adds a three-run homer, as Boston beats Detroit, 11 - 8.

1962: Don Drysdale pushes his record to 19-4 as he completes a three-game Dodger sweep over the Giants, winning, 11 - 1. Frank Howard has a home run and three singles to drive home five runs. Willie Mays accounts for the only Giants run with a home run.

1964: Gates Brown's 2-run home run in the bottom of the 8th gives the #Tigers a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

1972: Brooks Robinson hits a two-out home run in the 11th to give Baltimore a 4 - 3 win over the Indians.

1974: Detroit hits four home runs in the first inning in an 8 - 2 win over the Indians. Al Kaline, Bill Freehan and Mickey Stanley hit consecutive home runs off Fritz Peterson, and Ed Brinkman adds another later in the inning, off Steve Kline.

1983: Due to a dislocated thumb caused by a collision at home plate trying to score in the first game of a doubleheader against the Braves, Padres 1B Steve Garvey's consecutive game streak ends in the nightcap at 1,207.

1984: Tigers 3 - Red Sox 0. Milt Wilcox tosses a gem, allowing 3 hits and 0 walks in 8 innings. Ruppert Jones' triple is the game's only XBH. Tigers (70-32) get their 70th win.

1986: Sparky Anderson, the first manager to win the World Series in each league, also becomes the first manager to win 600 games in both the National and American Leagues when his Tigers beat the Brewers 9 - 5. Sparky will manage the Tigers for 17 years total and become the All-Time winningest manager in the Tigers franchise with 1,331 Wins.

1993: The Houston Astros selected John Hudek off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2002: The text of the letter signed by 40 Hall of Famers and sent to baseball commissioner Bud Selig and union head Donald Fehr urges all sides "to protect the game we all love and have given so much to, we suggest you agree to a qualified mediator that will allow you to find the common ground necessary to avoid a work stoppage" is released.
The former outstanding players, who include Reggie Jackson, Willie Mays and Warren Spahn, believe another work stoppage would be a terrible mistake.

2007: Major League Baseball sets a single-day attendance record as 717,478 fans show up for 17 games. It easily breaks the 640,412 record set on July 3, 1999.

2007: Ichiro Suzuki collects the 1,500th hit of his major league career, a single off of Lenny DiNardo. It comes in his 1,060th game. Only two players - Al Simmons (1,040) and George Sisler (1,048) - have accumulated 1,500 hits in fewer games.

2007: Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Isao Harimoto was the only player to collect 3,000 or more hits in Nippon Pro Baseball, putting Ichiro second all-time in hits by a Japanese player in top-tier baseball leagues.

2013: The Houston Astros traded Jose Veras to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later and Danry Vasquez (minors). The Detroit Tigers sent David Paulino (September 13, 2013) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.

Since 1900, the only players to lead their league at least 5 straight years were Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt and Barry Bonds. Ted Williams led the AL 1941-42, missed 3 years in WWII, then led from 1946-49. It looks like Mike Trout will join that elite group if he stays healthy.

Worst season ever? For 2019 Tigers, it?s now a real possibility.
Mlive

Can it be done? Here is what the Tigers would have to do the rest of the way to reach the following marks:

Most losses in AL history*: 12-49 (.197)

Tie most losses in AL history: 13-48 (.213)

Most losses in MLB history: 11-50 (.180)

Tie most losses in MLB history: 12-49 (.197)

Worst win percentage in MLB history: 8-53 (.131)

* All the records cited are for the modern era (1900-present).

In other words, to avoid all this ignominy, the Tigers simply must win 14 games -- 23 percent of the remaining slate -- over the next seven weeks.

It?s hard to believe now, but the Tigers started the season at 18-20. Since May 13, they?ve gone 12-51, putting them on an almost perfect pace to go down to the wire against the 2003 Tigers and 1962 Mets.

On post-May 13 pace: 12-49 rest of the way with final record of 42-120.

On overall season pace: 18-43 with a final record of 48-114.

What Fangraphs predicts: 25-36 rest of the way with final record of 55-107.

What FiveThirty predicts: 22-39 rest of the way with final record of 52-110.

What Baseball Prospectus predicts: 27-34 rest of the way for final record of 57-105.

If you?re looking at the 2003 team as a benchmark, the current Tigers are doing OK. The 2003 Tigers didn?t win their 30th game until Aug. 7, when they already had 82 losses.

2003 team?s record through:

100 games: 27-73

120 games: 31-89

130 games: 33-97

140 games: 37-103

150 games: 38-112

End of season: 43-119

The Tigers avoided an even worse historical fate by winning three of their final four games. Their opponent? The first-place Minnesota Twins, who had already clinched the division title and were preparing for the playoffs under the helm of a second-year manager named Ron Gardenhire.

Sixteen years later, Gardenhire may be on the other side.

The schedule will do him no favors. From Aug. 16 to Sept. 2, the Tigers play 17 consecutive games against likely playoff teams (the Rays, Astros, Indians and Twins. The final month of the season includes some breathers, but also features four teams likely to be jockeying for the playoffs.

It also includes games against the Baltimore Orioles, who are currently 35-70 after picking up eight wins after the All-Star break. The Tigers are Orioles will battle it out for the worst record in baseball and thus the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2020.

The best scenario for the Tigers? Win 14 games. That?s enough to keep them from the humiliation of a record-book season, but probably not enough to climb keep them from getting that No. 1 pick.
