Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

July 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1909: After winning 13 in a row, Christy Mathewson loses to Pittsburgh, 3 - 1, giving up four hits and three runs in the 1st inning. Red Ames relieves in the 2nd. Mathewson's record is now 15-3.

1917: The Tigers' Ty Cobb, Bobby Veach, and Ossie Vitt follow each other in the lineup, each going 5 for 5 in a 16 - 4 win over Washington. Having three players collect five hits ties the major-league record for the century. Cobb also scores five times.

1923: Harry Heilmann goes 0-for-4 to lower his batting average below .400, to .397. He will next reach .400 in late September, and finish the season at .403 to win the batting title and deny Babe Ruth the Triple Crown.

1933: Cardinal pitcher Dizzy Dean sets a modern major league record striking out 17 Cubs. Teammate catcher Jimmie Wilson also sets a new mark recording 18 putouts.

1936: The Yankees, with Jake Powell back in CF for the injured Myril Hoag, drop a 5 - 4 decision to Detroit. On August 1st, Powell will go to LF, with Joe DiMaggio playing CF for the first time. George Selkirk will return to RF. The Yanks loses today when Charlie Gehringer ties the match with a two-run homer in the 8th. Bill Dickey allows a ball to get by him in the 10th and Jack Burns scores the winner. Schoolboy Rowe pitches 10 innings for the win over Johnny Broaca.

1938: Hank Greenberg ties a Babe Ruth record with his ninth home run of the week.

1939: Hank Greenberg scores five runs in a game for the only time, helping the Tigers pummel the A’s 14-0.

1940: The Detroit Tigers purchased Tuck Stainback from the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1951: Joe DiMaggio makes a rare mental error against Detroit, catching a Steve Souchock fly ball in deep CF and, thinking it's the third out, begins trotting in. It's only the second out, and George Kell scores from second base to make the score 4 - 2 in the eighth. Despite the lapse, the Yanks win, 5 - 4, with DiMag knocking in the winning run in the ninth.

1951: Ty Cobb testifies in front of Congress denying the reserve clause makes 'peons' out of baseball players.

1959: In his ML debut, Willie McCovey goes 4 for 4 with 2 triples off Robin Roberts to lead the Giants to a 7 - 2 win over the Phils. McCovey was hitting .372 with 29 home runs at Phoenix when promoted.

1961: Al Kaline’s longest hitting streak peaks today at 22 games. Kaline bats 31 for 84 .369, Slugs .619, 22 Runs, 9 2B, 4 Hr's, 10 RBI.

1962: After mysteriously disappearing off the team bus to use the rest room three days ago and trying to fly to Israel, pitcher Gene Conley returns to the Red Sox and is fined $2,000. Yesterday, he sent a telegram to manager Mike Higgins explaining he was tired and had other plans.

1962: Homers by Leon Wagner, Pete Runnels and Rocky Colavito power the American League past the National League, 9 - 4, in the second All-Star Game of 1962.

1968: In the 1st inning, Washington SS Ron Hansen turns the 8th unassisted triple play in major league history and the first in 41 years. Cleveland's Joe Azcue hits a liner to Hansen, who steps on second base to double Dave Nelson, and tags Russ Snyder sliding into second base for the third out. Hansen's effort is not enough, as Washington loses, 10 - 1.

1969: Using five homers, the Braves thrash the Phils, 6 - 3, in the first game of a twinbill. Felipe Alou and Hank Aaron homer and Bob Tillman, hitting .187, hits three in a row. Aaron's blast is the 537th of his career and moves him past Mickey Mantle on the all-time list. The Phils win the nitecap, 4 - 3. Dick Allen homers in the 2nd inning and follows a Johnny Callison homer in the 8th with his second shot of the game.

1969: It is a bad day for the Mets at Shea Stadium. In the first of two games, Houston scores 11 runs in the 9th inning, eight coming home on grand slams by Jimmy Wynn and Denis Menke, to trounce the Mets, 16 - 3. This is the first time this century in the National League that two grand slams have come in the same inning, with Mets pitchers Cal Koonce and Ron Taylor teeing up the honors. The last time in the American League was July 18, 1962. Taylor also serves up a single to Houston relief pitcher Fred Gladding, the only hit of Gladding's career in 63 at bats and 450 games. The second game is no different as the Astros tally 10 runs in the 3rd inning to thrash the Mets, 11 - 5. Curt Blefary triples with the sacks full and pitcher Larry Dierker (13-8) homers with a man on.

1971: The Detroit Tigers selected Ron Perranoski off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

1977: The Chicago Cubs purchased Dave Roberts from the Detroit Tigers.

1978: The Expos crush the Braves, 19 - 0, collecting 28 hits and a National League-record-tying eight home runs. Andre Dawson, Larry Parrish, Dave Cash and Dawson again homer in the 4th inning; Parrish has a single and three consecutive home runs in the game, only the third major leaguer to do it. Not till Andres Galarraga in 1995 will another hitter bang homers in three consecutive innings. The 58 total bases break an 85-year-old record held by the Reds. Woodie Fryman conducts the win over Mickey Mahler.

1985: Tigers fans are startled when a pilot swoops his twin engine Lear jet low over Tiger Stadium during a game.
The Michigan man flying the plane has his license revoked by the FAA for flying in a "careless and reckless manner"

1990: In a surprisingly harsh ruling, Commissioner Fay Vincent orders Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to resign as the club's general partner by August 20th and bans him from day-to-day operation of the team for life. The ruling is a result of Steinbrenner's $40,000 payment to confessed gambler Howie Spira for damaging information about since-traded Yankee star Dave Winfield.

1994: Detroit defeats Oakland 14 - 2, as Tiger C Chad Kreuter ties a major league record with three sacrifice flies. He is the 9th player in history to perform the feat.

1995: Mike Schmidt, Richie Ashburn, Negro League star Leon Day, former National League president William Hulbert and Vic Willis are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1998: The Detroit Tigers signed Luis Pineda as a free agent.

2008: The Detroit Tigers traded Ivan Rodriguez to the New York Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth.

2008: Curtis Granderson has 5 hits and Gary Sheffield has 4 in the #Tigers 14 - 12 win over the indians in 13 innings.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EAjrit1XoAASJUy?format=jpg&name=small

2008: The Yankees, seeking catching help after losing Jorge Posada for the remainder of the season, acquire Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth.

2009: A story in the New York Times states that sluggers David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are among the 104 major leaguers who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. The test results were supposed to be kept secret, but Alex Rodriguez's presence on the list of those who tested positive had already been leaked earlier this year. Ortiz states that he was not aware he had tested positive six years earlier and denies using steroids.

2010: One of the players traded yesterday makes a splash in his debut for his new team. Starting at 3B for the Tigers, Jhonny Peralta homers twice over the Green Monster as Detroit defeats Boston 6 - 5 withstanding a late-game grand slam by David Ortiz. Armando Galarraga's run of bad luck continues as he is hit on the ankle by a line drive off the bat of Kevin Youkilis with a 4 - 1 lead, and has to leave the game one out shy of qualifying for the win. Rookie Robbie Weinhardt relieves him and picks up his first major league victory.

2011: The Seattle Mariners traded Doug Fister and David Pauley to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later, Francisco Martinez (minors), Charlie Furbush and Casper Wells.
The Detroit Tigers sent Chance Ruffin (August 17, 2011) to the Seattle Mariners to complete the trade.

2013: As part of a 3-team trade:
The Detroit Tigers sent Avisail Garcia to the Chicago White Sox.
The Detroit Tigers sent Brayan Villarreal to the Boston Red Sox.
The Chicago White Sox sent Jake Peavy to the Boston Red Sox.
The Boston Red Sox sent Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers.
The Boston Red Sox sent Cleuluis Rondon (minors), Frankie Montas and J.B. Wendelken to the Chicago White Sox.

2015: In a whirlwind day of trading, the Blue Jays once again make the biggest splash, acquiring P David Price from Detroit for prospects Matt Boyd, Jairo Labourt and Daniel Norris.

2015: Detroit trades P Joakim Soria to Pittsburgh for IF JaCoby Jones.
2015: The Detroit Tigers traded David Price to the Toronto Blue Jays for Matthew Boyd, Jairo Labourt and Daniel Norris.

2016: Jose Iglesias' walk-off infield single completes a wild comeback with 2 outs in the 9th and gives the Tigers a 3 - 2 win over the astros.

2017: The 2017 class of the Hall of Fame is inducted in Cooperstown, NY.
Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan Rodriguez are the three players honored, while executives Bud Selig and John Schuerholz were voted in by the Veterans Committee. The presence of a large number of fans wearing the gear of the defunct Montr?al Expos in honor of Raines cannot be missed among the crowd of 27,000 present for the ceremonies.

2017: The Cubs obtain C Alex Avila and P Justin Wilson from the Tigers for Jeimer Candelario and Isaac Paredes.

July 31 in Tigers and mlb history:

1897: St. Louis hurler John Grimes establishes a major league record which still stands today by hitting six batters in a nine-inning game.

1912: A day after the Braves went 14 innings to beat St. Louis, they go 19 innings with the Pirates. Lefty Otto Hess goes all the way for Boston. The Pirates score three in the 19th, and the Braves come back with 2, losing, 7 - 6. Honus Wagner, who earlier stole home, drives in the final run for Pittsburgh. Wagner, at 38, is the oldest player in the National League.

1912: Ty Cobb sets a major league record with his 68th hit of the month.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DifYCIAXsAEPZWA?format=jpg&name=medium

1914: Red Sox owner Joe Lannin buys the Providence Grays (IL) and Melrose Park from the Detroit Tigers for $75,000. Detroit gets to pick one player from the Providence roster and they select P Red Oldham, overlooking Carl Mays. Detroit then purchases the Buffalo (IL) team.

1916: Babe Ruth fires a two-hitter, by Ty Cobb and George Burns, for a 6 - 0 win for the Red Sox over the Tigers.

1929: Babe Ruth hits a fungo 447 feet in an unofficial test, beating all trial competition records.

1935: Two American League pitchers each hit two home runs in a game. Wes Ferrell clouts a couple against Buck Newsom of the Browns and knocks in four runs in a 6 - 4 win for Boston. Mel Harder hits two for Cleveland but loses, 6 - 4, to the White Sox. No other hurlers will hit two homers this season.

1936: Led by Lou Gehrig, who clouts his 33rd homer, the Yankees down the Indians, 11 - 7, at League Park. The loss snaps the Tribe's five-game win streak, and leaves the Yankees 8 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland. Gehrig and Red Rolfe clout homers in the 5th to chase Mel Harder, but the Indians answer with three doubles by Earl Averill and a homer by Hal Trosky. Bump Hadley, with relief from Johnny Murphy, hangs on for his 9th win.

1936: Behind Lefty Grove and Jimmie Foxx, the visiting Red Sox top the White Sox, 7 - 3. Grove wins his 13th on seven hits, while Double X bangs his 30th homer, a triple and double.

1942: Charlie Gehringer’s final career home run is a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth. Detroit loses, though; the homer run turns a 7-4 deficit into a 7-6 loss.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Di35tHQW0AA58OL?format=jpg&name=900x900

1954: Using a borrowed bat, Dodger killer Joe Adcock hits 4 homers and a double for 18 total bases in the Braves' 15 - 7 victory at Ebbets Field. The 18 total bases is a major-league mark and, combined with the seven total bases from the day before, gives him a two-day tally of 25. The two-game total ties him with Ty Cobb.

1959: Earl Wilson, the first black pitcher to play for the Red Sox, hurls 3 2/3 innings, walking nine and leaves the game with a 4 - 0 lead.

1959: Al Kaline hits the first of two career inside the park home runs in a loss to the red sox.

1961: The 2nd All-Star Game of 1961 ends in a 1 - 1 tie at Fenway Park. Rocky Colavito homers for the American League run. Heavy rains end the exhibition after nine innings.

1962: The National League rejects Commissioner Ford Frick's proposal for interleague play in 1963.

1963: The Detroit Tigers released Joe Grzenda.

1972: The Detroit Tigers released Ron Perranoski.

1972: White Sox slugger Dick Allen becomes the seventh major leaguer to hit two inside-the-park home runs in one game. The homers pace the White Sox over the Twins, 8 - 1.

1973: The Tigers win a pair from the Brewers, 6 - 5 and 9 - 4, and end Dave May's American League season-best hitting streak at 24 games.

1974: Ron Cey drives in eight runs to lead the host Dodgers to a 15 - 4 victory over the Padres.

1981: The fifty-day old baseball strike is settled as owners and players agree on a pooling system for free agent compensation. The All-Star game will mark the end of baseball's first-ever mid-season work stoppage.

1983: Brooks Robinson, Juan Marichal, George Kell and Walter Alston are inducted into the Hall of Fame, bringing the total number of Hall of Famers to 184.

1984: Game 1: Tigers 5 - Indians 1. The Tigers score 5 runs in the 2nd inning. Doug Baker hits a bases loaded triple, then gets demoted to make room for Alan Trammell, returning from injury.

1992: The Detroit Tigers signed Jeff Robinson as a free agent.

1994: Steve Carlton, Leo Durocher and Phil Rizzuto are inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame.

1994: Jeff Bagwell's 36th homer is the only Astro score in their 7 - 1 loss, but he ties a club record with 29 RBIs for the month. His 105 ribbies through July is the 4th-best in National League history.

1995: The Detroit Tigers traded David Wells to the Cincinnati Reds for a player to be named later, Dave Tuttle (minors) and C.J. Nitkowski. The Cincinnati Reds sent Mark Lewis (November 16, 1995) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1996: The Dodgers obtain OF Chad Curtis from the Tigers in exchange for pitchers Joey Eischen and John Cummings. Curtis will lead off in place of the cancer-stricken Brett Butler.

2006: The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Sean Casey to the Detroit Tigers for Brian Rogers.

2009: The Detroit Tigers traded Luke French and Mauricio Robles to the Seattle Mariners for Jarrod Washburn.

2011: Two of the best pitchers in the American League face each other, as Detroit's Justin Verlander faces off against Los Angeles' Jered Weaver, both looking for their 15th win. Verlander takes a no-hitter into the 8th inning, while Weaver loses his cool after Carlos Guillen hits a 7th-inning homer; he throws a pitch over the head of the next batter, Alex Avila, and is ejected. Verlander and the Tigers prevail, 3 - 2.

2014: It is the Tigers who engineer the biggest blockbuster deal, however, as they pull CF Austin Jackson from their game with the White Sox in the middle of the 7th inning because he has just been traded to Seattle. They receive IF Nick Franklin in return, but immediately package him along with P Drew Smyly and SS prospect Willie Adames to Tampa Bay to reel in former Cy Young Award winner David Price.

2015: The Detroit Tigers traded Yoenis Cespedes to the New York Mets for Luis Cessa and Michael Fulmer.

2016: Miguel Cabrera with his 2nd home run and 4 RBI and career RBI 1,511 passes the great Mickey Mantle for 54th all-time.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES.
Totally Tigers

He said, ?(sic) Hopefully, they remember what happened to the Tigers back in 2016 when they waited too long to sell and added years to their rebuild as a result.?

This GM went on to discuss the Tigers and how they created a horrible situation for themselves by not fully committing to a rebuild.

How Derek Jeter Can Be Like Teddy Ballgame.
Seamheads

On July 25, 1966, Ted Williams was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

On July 26, 2020, it?s a near certainty that former New York Yankees shortstop and current Miami Marlins chief executive officer and part owner Derek Jeter will join him.

What?s not nearly as clear is the kind of induction speech Jeter, who grew up in Kalamazoo, will give. But if he really wants to follow in the Splendid Splinter?s footsteps, all he has to do is invoke the memory of the social justice activism that Williams delivered 53 years ago, especially the 36 word closing part that turned heads:

I hope that someday Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson will be voted into the Hall of Fame as symbols of the great Negro Players who are not here only because they weren?t given the chance.

On that day, Williams went to bat for all the great persons of color who, because of the color of their skin, were not permitted to play our national pastime until the late Jackie Robinson broke that barrier in 1947.

Of course, baseball was just a mirror image of the institutional racism that affected this country seven plus decades ago. Some would say that racism still persists in sports as well as in life now. But that doesn?t mean it should.

Something else that shouldn?t be tolerated: ageism. That is especially true in a sport whose ratings depend on its older fans watching the games being played. According to data recently released by Street & Smith?s Sports Business Journal and Magna Global, the average age of a baseball viewer is 57, up from 52 in 2006. Of the top major sports, the national pastime has the oldest viewers, with 50 percent of its audience 55 or older, according to the Nielsen ratings. The average age of baseball viewers is 53, compared with 47 for the NFL and 37 for the NBA.

"Yet for a sport that relies heavily on its old-timers, Major League Baseball (MLB) sure treats its retired players disrespectfully. That is because there are 628 former players, such as 70-year-old Steve Grilli being hosed out of pensions by the league and the players? association. And how?s this for irony: his son, Jason Grilli also played in The Show and will receive an MLB pension. Both Grillis pitched for the Detroit Tigers".

Because they played before 1980, when the vesting rules changed, all the men like Steve Grilli have been getting since 2011 are non-qualified life annuities of $625 for every 43 game days they were on an active roster, up to $10,000. Meanwhile, the maximum IRS pension limit is $225,000.

Neither the league nor the union representing today?s players, the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) want to do anything more to help these retirees; in fact, the nonqualified annuity payment cannot be passed on to a designated beneficiary. So when Steve Grilli passes on, the payment he is currently receiving won?t go to any family member, such as his wife, Kathleen.

Onetime Tigers second baseman Chuck Scrivener is in the same boat. So is Cass High School alum Carmen Fanzone. When both of those men pass, their payments pass with them. So Barbara Scrivener and Sue Raney Fanzone will each get squat.

To date, the MLBPA has been loath to divvy up anymore of the collective pie. Even though the players? welfare and benefits fund is worth more than $3.5 billion, the union?s executive director, former Tigers first baseman Tony Clark, has never commented about this situation, though many of the retirees are filing for bankruptcy at advanced ages, having banks foreclose on their homes and are so sickly and poor that they cannot afford adequate health care coverage.

In my opinion, Jeter is just the person to deliver a ringing indictment against baseball?s version of elder abuse. Known for his good nature, Jeter?s Turn 2 Foundation is devoted to supporting positive role models for children. As a result, in 2009, Jeter received both the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Award and MLB?s Roberto Clemente Award for excellence in both baseball and community service. Five years later, Fortune Magazine named Jeter to its list of the World?s 50 Greatest Leaders. According to the magazine, Jeter is ?the type of role model player that even a Red Sox fan must grudgingly respect.?

Teddy Ballgame would no doubt agree.

The asking price for Tigers closer Shane Greene is ?far more reasonable? than the requests for other high-end relievers around the league.
Pirates? Felipe Vazquez, the Reds? Raisel Iglesias, the Mets? Edwin Diaz and the Padres? Kirby Yates as relievers who would be much harder to acquire, which isn?t surprising.
