Tigers option Hoffman, Ortega.
from Jason Beck's Tigers blog

The moves leave the Tigers with 17 pitchers in camp, not counting Al Alburquerque, who will open the season on the disabled list. It has a bigger impact on the bullpen competition, which is reduced on the right-handed side to Brayan Villarreal, Luis Marte and Chris Bootcheck, who has quietly survived all the cuts so far. The left-handed side of the bullpen competition now slants mainly towards longer relievers.

Leyland made clear this a.m. that Matt Hoffman, the LH reliever whose stock has been high, will probably pitch in Detroit this season.
Leyland also high on Jose Ortega's fastball, which was why he stayed around into this week. But the bullpen job is now Villarreal vs. Marte.

From Tigers - phillies game of March 19.
Cabrera takes hot shot off face, is bleeding here at Clearwater.
Just when Tigers camp seemed to be going swimmingly, Cabrera just got hit in face by a sharp one-hopper. He's leaving game, towel on face.
Cabrera walking off field, towel on face. Hunter Pence hit a rocket that caught Cabrera square in the nose and forehead.
Miguel Cabrera just took a shot one-hopper off the right cheek, and is bleeding relatively badly, he's coming out of the game.
Francona on ESPN: "You're going to pick up a paper and read about his lack of ability to play 3B. Every 3B in league gets hit by a ball."
Cabera was taken into the Tigers clubhouse for precautionary reasons after taking a one-hopper off the face.
Miggy's sunglasses likely saved it from hitting directly in the eye, but were probably what caused the cut in his cheek.
Cabrera never went down, and took his glasses off immediately. Kevin Rand came out, and hustled him off the field, towel in place.
No additional info on Cabrera other than the stitches, X-rays disclosure ... Probably won't get further details until after today's game.

Leyland spoke with Cabrera in trainer's room, wouldn't provide additional detail other than saying he was still at area hospital.

Consensus from Tigers is it was a bad-hop off a bad infield that conked Cabrera. Leyland said: A Gold Glover would be in the hospital, also.

I think if you see the replay, the ball took a high bounce of 3 feet? after it hit the ground.

No guesses from Tigers on severity. Black-and-blue face, for sure. Nasty gash will need to heal. Otherwise, they aren't forecasting.
