On the play in question, I wouldn't say it's fair to jump to conclusions and point to this as an overarching illustration of poor defense. Cabrera was in front of the ball and it took a bad hop, jumping up on him at the last instant. He tried to get his face out of the way by turning his head but the ball was simply hit too hard. There aren't many guys who could have made that play.

Relief corps well stocked from left side.
The Tigers aren't that far removed from the days when they had one steady left-handed reliever in their bullpen and were searching for a second. It only feels like a long time ago.

In another year, Matt Hoffman might have lasted until the end battling for a lefty relief spot in the Detroit bullpen. For now, he's blocked -- not just by Phil Coke and Daniel Schlereth, but by two lefty swingmen -- Duane Below and Adam Wilk -- currently contending for a starting job as well.

In a division where several of the most dangerous hitters are left-handed, that depth is a good development for Detroit, which shouldn't have to rely on trades -- such as last year's deal for David Purcey -- to supply southpaw talent again anytime soon.

"I'm very pleased with the options that we have," Leyland said. "I think it's pretty good."

Austin Jackson had one of the rare occasions this spring when he put a ball in play for an out, grounding out to third base to end the game. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a walk Monday, giving him 14 strikeouts in 38 plate appearances, and 8-for-19 on balls put in play.

March 20 in Tigers and mlb history :

1953 - U.S. Senator Edwin C. Johnson offers a bill to give clubs the sole right to ban radio-TV broadcasts of major league games in their own territory. The antitrust division of the Justice Department outlawed this practice in 1949. Johnson believes that it started the decline of baseball in small towns and cities throughout the country. His bill aims to restore the equity between large communities and the small areas.

2000 - The new World Umpires Association agrees to consolidate all umpires as part of an interim agreement with the commissioner's office. The umpires will merge beginning with this season, after being employed by either the National League or the American League since the latter's creation in 1901.

2002: The commissioner's office announces that Major League Baseball will continue the practice that began after the September 11 attacks of singing God Bless America during the seventh-inning stretch in each team's first homestand. In addition, a Flag of the United States patch will be worn on the jackets of all 30 major league teams this season and special logos will be used on Opening Day, Memorial Day weekend and the Fourth of July, with Canadian versions designed for the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos.
