August 22 in Tigers and mlb history:

1905: Umpire John Sheridan forfeits a game to Washington in the 11th when the Tigers refuse to resume play after a lengthy dispute. Washington is ahead 2 - 1 at the time of the forfeiture.

1915: In the 2nd inning of game one of a doubleheader versus Detroit, the crowd sees the Senators score a run with no times at bat, the only time it's ever happened. Chick Gandil and Merito Acosta walk; Rip Williams sacrifices, and George McBride hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Gandil, and the Tigers catch Acosta off second base when OF Bobby Veach throws to Ossie Vitt. Washington's Walter Johnson goes on to win and snap the Tigers' 9-game win streak.

1926: After three games with the Tigers are rained out at home, Connie Mack and Tom Shibe decide that Sunday baseball is entitled to be played. Armed with a court injunction preventing police from interfering, they play the first Sunday game ever seen in Philadelphia. A light rain holds the crowd to 10,000, but Lefty Grove sets down the White Sox, 3 - 2, without incident. A court later rules Sunday baseball still illegal; it will be 1934 before that law changes in Philadelphia.

1927: The Yankees lose their fourth straight for the first time, 9 - 4 to the Indians, despite Babe Ruth's 40th home run. Detroit wins its 13th straight, moving up to second, 12 1/2 games back.

1931: Newark (International) purchased George Quellich from the Detroit Tigers.

1933: Hank Greenberg has the first of 35 multi-home run games. He also gets the first of his six career walk-off home runs. Tigers beat the senators 10 - 8.

1934: Rudy York makes his big league debut with the Tigers.

1934: P Wes Ferrell hits two home runs in a 10-inning, 3 - 2 win for the Red Sox over the White Sox. It is the second time this season he has a pair of homers, and the third in his career. He will hit 2 home runs in a game 6 times before he finishes.

1938: Carl Hubbell has an arm operation for bone chips in his elbow and is finished for the season.

1939: The Detroit Tigers purchased Clay Smith from the Cleveland Indians.

1946: Clubs approve a change to a 168-game schedule, but they will rescind the decision at another meeting on September 16. Television is first recognized, with clubs given rights to their own games. Players jumping to outlaw leagues will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement for five years.

1948: The Dodgers steal eight bases, including a 5th-inning triple steal with Jackie Robinson on the front end. But the Braves win, 4 - 3, to move two games ahead of second-place Brooklyn. In the last 19 steal attempts against the Braves, no Dodger has been thrown out.

1951: The Dodgers sweep a pair of 10-inning games from St. Louis, with Clyde King picking up both come-from-behind victories. King goes three innings in game one and one inning in game two. Jackie Robinson is 5 for 6 in the nitecap including a 2-out single in the 10th off Al Brazle.
Andy Pafko has a homer in the nitecap, while Stan Musial hits his 29th in the first game. Carl Furillo has three hits on the afternoon and a pair of assists in game 1, bringing his season total to 21. The Dodgers have now won 14 straight from the Cards.

1959: The Redlegs' Frank Robinson hits three home runs in a row against St. Louis, as the Redlegs win 11 - 4. Robby has six RBIs.

1961: Roger Maris, in his record-setting season, becomes the first player to hit his 50th home run in the month of August. The 26-year old all-star outfielder connects off Ken McBride as the Yankees lose to the Angels, 4 - 3.

1965: Juan Marichal thinks Johnny Roseboro throws too close to his head returning the ball to Sandy Koufax and attacks the Dodger catcher with his bat. The Los Angeles backstop suffers cuts on the head during the 14-minute brawl.

1967: Indian pitcher Luis Tiant has 16 strikeouts in a 3 - 2 win over California.

1968: Jim Merritt loses his shutout in the 9th inning when Mickey Mantle parks a pinch homer at the Metrodome.
The Twins win, 3 - 1. Mick's homer ties him with Jimmie Foxx for 3rd place on the all-time list.

1968: In a game marred by a fight between Dick McAuliffe and Tommy John, the Tigers beat the White Sox 4-2. Mickey Lolich won in his first start since July 28th. Back to back HRs by Al Kaline and Willie Horton gave the Tigers the lead that Don McMahon made hold up.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ECk93ilX...pg&name=medium

1972: The Tigers and A?s have another brawl in the 7th inning of a loss, setting up bad blood in that year?s ALCS showdown between them.

1974: Before a crowd of 35,866, the largest in 18 years at Fenway Park, the Red Sox turn back the A's, 3 - 0. Luis Tiant wins his 20th for Boston this year. Boston (70-54) now leads the American League East by seven games.

1978: Ron LeFlore sets an American League record with his 27th straight successful stolen base attempt as Detroit beats the Twins 7 - 3. He began the streak on July 16.

1982: Ernie Banks becomes the first Cub to have his uniform number (14) retired.

1984: Tigers score at least 11 runs for the 3rd straight game. Tigers score 11 without a home run and only 3 XBH and beat the a's 11 - 4.

1985: The Detroit Tigers released Doug Bair.

1997: The Tigers pound the Brewers 16 - 1, with the aid of 23 hits and an 11-run 7th inning. Bobby Higginson gets five hits for Detroit, while Travis Fryman and Tony Clark drive in four runs apiece.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ef87MgBWkAAN36A?format=jpg&name=medium

2002: As part of a 3-team trade: The Oakland Athletics sent a player to be named later, Franklyn German and Carlos Pena to the Detroit Tigers.
The New York Yankees sent Jason Arnold (minors), John-Ford Griffin and Ted Lilly to the Oakland Athletics.
The Detroit Tigers sent Jeff Weaver to the New York Yankees. The Detroit Tigers sent cash to the Oakland Athletics.
The Oakland Athletics sent Jeremy Bonderman (August 22, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2007: The Rangers rout the Orioles, 30 - 3, to set an American League record for runs. They score 9 more in the nightcap to set the AL record for runs in a doubleheader, breaking the previous mark of 36 held by the 1937 Tigers. The 1950 Red Sox and 1955 White Sox had previously held the single-game AL record of 29. No team had scored 30 in the major leagues since the Chicago Colts in 1897. Travis Metcalf, just back from the minors, drives in 8 in the twin bill. In the first game, Metcalf and Marlon Byrd both homer. David Murphy goes 5 for 7 with 5 runs. #8 hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia and #9 hitter Ramon Vazquez both homer twice and drive in 7. Every Ranger scores at least once with Murphy and Saltalamacchia both crossing home five times. Vazquez scores the 30th run with a 3-run 9th-inning homer off Paul Shuey.

2011: Detroit's Justin Verlander continues his dominance on the mound, earning his major league-leading 19th win in the Tigers' 5 - 2 victory over the Rays. It is his 7th consecutive winning start. Alex Avila, hitting .424 in August, hits a two-run homer off Jeff Niemann in the 2nd to send the Tigers on their way.

2019: The Royals make a special trip to Fenway Park on what was a scheduled off-day in order to play the final innings of their game of August 7th against the Red Sox that was suspended by rain with the teams in a 4 - 4 tie in the top of the 10th. To ensure there will be fans present to cheer them on, the Sox put on a special admission price of $5 for adults and free for children 18 and under, with all profits going to the Jimmy Fund, the team's charity of choice. It works as over 16,000 people turn up to see 12 minutes of action before Brock Holt ends it by driving in Chris Owings, pinch-running for Christian Vazquez, from second base on a base hit to left with one out in the bottom of the 10th. Both teams then need to rush out to catch a plane, with K.C. headed to Cleveland, OH and Boston to San Diego, CA. Meanwhile children in the stands are allowed to run the bases and can go home happy.

THE SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Saturday Survey offers readers the opportunity to weigh in on a relevant topic. So here is a poll to gauge the pulse of our baseball-lovin? peeps.

Today, we center the discussion on the team?s slump and how fans see the season going forward. Is it starting to look like last year?

As always, we welcome your comments, so please vote and then submit your reasons (4 sentences max!) for how you voted in the usual comment box. Don?t forget to come back later and view the results!

The Tigers have been taking a nosedive, losing their last 9 games (through Thursday) and about to face the Indians ? a team that has beaten them 20 straight times. They are close to setting 2 new records with consecutive losses to AL Central rivals as well as consecutive losses to Cleveland.

Starting pitchers have been exiting games early, the bullpen is now being taxed and the lineup is not bringing in runs. Even Ron Gardenhire is admitting that nothing is working right now.

Is the start to this season merely a hiccup as the team gets acclimated or is this an indicator of another really bad ? or even worse ? year?

With only 60 games instead of the usual 162, let?s prorate all the wins and losses so that each game this year counts for approximately 2.5 games.

How do you think the 2020 year will go for Detroit as you compare it with the 2019 season?
1. Win/losses will be somewhat improved.

2. They?ll end up with a similar record to 2019.

3. They will end up with a worse record than 2019.

4. Not judging because the record will be impacted by the young kids coming up.

5. Still too early to tell.

6. Impossible to judge because of the short season.

7. Not sure.

Vote.

Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 88: The kids are alright but everything else is grim. 108 minutes.
The BYBTB staff talks baseball from a Tigers perspective.

We?re back in the wake of an exciting week of call-up, that, unfortunately, did little to curb the Tigers rapid descent to last place. Brandon Day and Ashley MacLennan meet up for an admittedly lengthy podcast (sorry about that) recorded on Thursday night after the Tigers were swept by the Chicago White Sox.

We?ll talk about the happy stuff first, as the Tigers addition of Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Isaac Paredes is going to make this a fun five weeks of baseball. We?ll then discuss the host of Dombrowski guys in their late 20?s and whether any of them have a place in the Tigers future. We?ll expand from there to see if anything more can do down to stave off the suck factor.

At about the 40 minute mark, we?ll get into a long segment of listener questions (thank you!).

Finally we wrap up with the old boys network being a pain in the butt to the rest of baseball fans everywhere.
Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a 3-0 grand slam with a seven run lead and a bunch of people were upset. Fortunately, everyone else piled right in on social media to shut that nonsense down.
Finally, we?ll wrap with the ugliest story of the week, as Reds broadcaster Thom Brenneman showed his true colors in a hot mic moment and probably got himself fired. He of course followed up with the save my job style apology and played the victim while taking a long time to even apologize to the community he slandered. Not good. Not good in society. Not good for baseball, and definitely not good for baseball having a strong future that welcomes all fans to the table. We?re really sick of this crap. Imagine how others feel.

August 23 in Tigers and mlb history:

1910: Chicago's Ed Walsh tops Walter Johnson, 1 - 0, the 3rd straight time Walsh has beaten the Big Train and Washington by that score.

1910: Left fielder Fred Clarke makes a record-tying four OF assists for Pittsburgh against the Phils, as the Bucs win 6 - 2. The Pirates get one more for a National League record five outfield assists.

1911: Ty Cobb endorses Lewis 66 Rye.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DlOow8IX0AAi9xh.jpg

1912: The Tigers fall to Walter Johnson, 8 - 1, Big Train's 16th win in a row. He is now 29-7.

1916: Ty Cobb goes from first to third on a teammate's single to LF, then swipes home when A's 3B Charlie Pick holds the ball. Detroit wins 10 - 3.

1930: The Yankees buy Frank Crosetti from the San Francisco Seals but allow him to play another season in the Pacific Coast League before reporting. The Yankees will make a similar arrangement for Joe DiMaggio, buying him from the Seals but waiting a year before acquiring him in 1936.

1931: Lefty Grove is frustrated in his effort to win a record-breaking 17th game in a row, as Jimmy Moore misjudges a routine fly ball by Ski Melillo, turning it into a 2-out double, to allow the game's lone run. The volatile Grove is outraged and unforgiving, not at Moore, but that Al Simmons, the regular OF, missed the game. Dick Coffman of the Browns allows just three hits to win, 1 - 0.

1936: Seventeen-year-old Bob Feller makes his first start and strikes out 15, one less than the American League record, as Cleveland beats St. Louis, 4 - 1.

1936: The East uses a balanced offense to thump the West, 10-2, in the 1936 Negro Leagues East-West Game.
Leroy Matlock got the win and Sug Cornelius the loss while Cool Papa Bell went 3 for 3.

1942: Walter Johnson pitching to Babe Ruth is the pregame attraction that draws 69,000 for the New York-Washington game at Yankee Stadium that provides $80,000 for Army-Navy relief. Ruth hits the fifth pitch into the right-field stands, and then adds one more shot before circling the bases. Sixteen relief games contribute $523,000 during the season.
In the doubleheader between the Senators and the Yankees, the Senators win the opener, 7 - 6 and New York cops the nitecap, 3 - 0, in 5 1/2 innings.

1956: Led by Nellie Fox's seven straight hits, the White Sox sweep the Yankees. Mickey Mantle has a bunt single, triple and home run in the 6 - 4 nightcap loss but trails Fox in season hits, 158 to 155. But the Mick still leads in the Triple Crown race.

1958: In a 10 - 1 win over Milwaukee, Gil Hodges hits his 14th career grand slam to establish a new National League record.

1962: Steve Boros matches the American League record for most errors in an inning by a 3B with 4, but Detroit beats Cleveland 8 - 5 as Al Kaline hits two home runs.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EClHEeLX...pg&name=medium

1963: Warren Spahn's 601st start is a modern National League record. Grover Alexander had the previous record of 600. The Braves beat the Dodgers, 6 - 1.

1968: Stan Bahnsen outpitches Earl Wilson to give the host Yankees a 2 - 1 win over Detroit. The two teams then battle for 19 innings, before the second game is suspended by curfew with the score 3 - 3. The game will be finished tomorrow. In the long tie, Lindy McDaniel retires 21 straight Tiger batters, six on strikeouts. In his last three relief appearances, he has retired 30 batters in a row.
https://pbs.twimg.com/card_img/11649...jpg&name=small

1972: Chicago's Dick Allen becomes the 4th major league player (Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, and Alex Johnson are the others) to hit one into the CF bleachers in Comiskey Park when he connects off New York's Lindy McDaniel. The 2-run homer in the 7th ices the 5 - 2 win for the Sox. This year, all the Chicago Wednesday games are in the afternoon, and Harry Caray announces them while sitting in the CF bleachers. Allen's drive misses Caray by just a few rows.

1976: A sign marking Tiger Stadium as a state historic site is unveiled.
The sign was stolen after Tiger Stadium closed and has never been found.
From left: Al Kaline, Hal Newhouser, Billy Rogell, and Charlie Gehringer.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DkqG9XCWsAgHW-Z.jpg

1981: The Minnesota Twins traded Ron Jackson to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later. The Detroit Tigers sent Tim Corcoran (September 4, 1981) to the Minnesota Twins to complete the trade.

1981: Rick Peters hits a pinch hit walk-off single to give the Tigers their 9th straight win 5 -4 over the rangers.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CqjSa-gW...g&name=240x240

1983: The Detroit Tigers purchased Glenn Abbott from the Seattle Mariners for $100,000.

1998: Giants OF Barry Bonds hits his 26th homer, the 400th of his career, off Kirt Ojala of the Marlins in the Giants' 10 - 5 victory. He thus becomes the first player in major league history with more than 400 career home runs and 400 career steals.

1999: The Yankees score six runs in the 1st inning on their way to a 21 - 3 victory over the Rangers. 3B Scott Brosius (6) and C Joe Girardi (7) - the 8th and 9th batters in the New York lineup - drive in 13 of the Yankee runs.
Derek Jeter scores his 100th run of the year, the first Yank to string together four straight seasons of 100+ runs since Mickey Mantle did it in nine straight seasons (1953-1961).

1999: Joining Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire, Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. becomes the third player in major league history to hit 200 homers in a four-season span. Junior's 39th helps Seattle beat the Indians, 4 - 1.

2000: At Comerica Park, fans flee their seats as swarms of small insects invade the stands during the 1st inning.
The six-legged pests do not affect the players, and the game continues uninterrupted with the Tigers edging the Mariners, 6 - 5.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ECaoROjW...g&name=360x360

2003: Tigers lose their 11th straight a 14 - 8 loss to the angels. It will be their longest losing streak in a 119-loss season.

2007: The Detroit Tigers traded Craig Monroe and cash to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later. The Chicago Cubs sent Clay Rapada (August 30, 2007) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2012: The San Diego Padres selected Thad Weber off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

2012: Justin Verlander strikes out 12 in 9 innings; Tigers win 3 - 2 over the blue jays on Alex Avila walk-off single in the 11th.

2019: For the second time this year, Jacob deGrom strikes out at least 13 batters and also homers in a game, limiting the Braves to 1 run over 7 innings. However, his long ball is the only offense for the Mets tonight, who go on to lose the game, 2 - 1, in 14 innings on Billy Hamilton's first hit with Atlanta. DeGrom records his 200th K of the year in the game, as New York's pitchers combine for a total of 26, tying the major league record for an extra-inning game. Before deGrom did it twice in a season, no pitcher had ever struck out 13 or more batters and homered in the same game more than once in his career. For Atlanta, Ronald Acuna becomes the second youngest player to record a 30-30 season, after Mike Trout.
