DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Yesterday, we addressed the Detroit Tigers’ off-season needs, focusing on positional players. Today, we’re going to take a look at starting pitching.
For the 2024 season, the Tigers ended up being short-staffed due to trades and injury. These are the pitchers who were regular starting pitchers:
Matt Manning
Kenta Maeda
Casey Mize
Keider Montero
Reese Olson
Tarik Skubal
How much work has to be done for the 2025 starting rotation?
If we work with the 5-man rotation, how many new starting pitchers will the Tigers need?

Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING.
Totally Tigers

Last week, Scott Harris gave his end-of-the-year press conference. And for many fans, the playoff memories are fading into the off-season.
Yes, he addressed several issues that are sensitive to fans’ souls.
I bet you can guess what they are.
If you are one of these fans, I implore you to wait before heading for that cliff edge. It’s because you can’t take Harris’ comments at face value.
There is nuance. There is diplomacy. There is context.
There was ambiguous wording.
Unlike his predecessor who said whatever came into his mind, Scott is a practiced speaker. You’ve had almost 2 years to get to know him and now understand that he is a guarded speaker. A diplomatic speaker.
A professional speaker.
And he’s never going to say anything that will be deemed controversial.
He’s an expert at saying just enough. But he’s never going to show his full hand until the action is complete.
Especially when the Tigers’ season just ended a mere 48 hours before the press conference.
So let’s dig into some of his statements, shall we?

The 3rd game of this year's ALDS set an attendance record for Comerica Park. And it must have the Detroit Tigers thinking....

There is some concern over the potential loss/reduction in tv broadcasting fees given the Diamond/Bally bankruptcy and announcement they were dropping the Tigers. A lower contract could be negotiated still.

But a potential loss of $50 mill will impact payroll. Unless the Tigers decide that a significant boost in the roster will generate greater revenue via attendance and a playoff return to help offset a loss in broadcasting revenue. The next 2 months will tell us what they decide.

Three Finger Brown, in relief, is the winning pitcher over Chief Bender, who throws a complete game.

1960: The San Francisco Giants lose to their Tokyo counterparts, the Yomiuri Giants, 1 - 0, in the first of a 16-game exhibition series. San Francisco will lose again, 2 - 1, to the Japan All-Stars tomorrow, but will finish the series with 11 wins, four losses, and one tie.

1975: In a fitting finish to one of the most classic World Series ever played, the Cincinnati Reds beat the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling Game 7 victory, 4 - 3. Joe Morgan's 9th-inning looping single scoring Ken Griffey proves to be the decisive hit.

1984: World Series MVP Alan Trammell appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

a 5 - 4 win in Game 3 of the Series. David Justice scores the winning run. Lemke had made a potentially crucial error in the top half of the inning. The contest is the longest night game in Series history at four hours and four minutes, and the second longest by innings. The Minnesota Twins use a World Series-record 23 players in the game.

During the game, the Cardinals ask the umpires to examine Rogers? glove for a foreign substance, citing a dark smudge on his pitching hand. Rogers claims the smudge is dirt from the mound. Carlos Guillen goes 3-for-3 with a double and triple. Craig Monroe hits his 2nd HR of the series.

2011: Albert Pujols has one of the greatest games in World Series history as he hits three homers, collects 5 hits and drives in 6 runs in Game 3 of the World Series in Arlington, TX. The Cardinals batter Texas, 16 - 7, in the third highest-scoring game ever in the Fall Classic, and are now up two games to one.
Pujols ties World Series single-game records for homers (Babe Ruth twice and Reggie Jackson), hits (Paul Molitor) and RBI (Bobby Richardson and Hideki Matsui) and sets a record with 14 total bases.

Scherzer is the winner, working hard to get through five innings, and Sean Doolittle records the save.
