August 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1904: Christy Mathewson and the visiting Giants top the Reds, 3 - 1, beating Noodles Hahn. Matty drives in one of the three runs scored in the 8th with a single and improves his record to 28-9.

1905: Making his Major League debut, Ty Cobb doubles off Highlander Jack Chesbro in a 5 - 3 Tiger victory at Detroit's Bennett Park.

1912: Earl Hamilton no-hits the Tigers at Navin Field (Tiger Stadium), the first no-hitter in Browns/Orioles history.
Tigers are no-hit but not shut out: Ty Cobb scores after walking, advancing on an error, and coming home on double steal.

1913: The Giants score six runs against Grover Cleveland Alexander, but the Phillies come back from the 6 - 0 deficit to score eight against Christy Mathewson. With two outs in the top of the 9th, and the Phils leading 8 - 6 over New York, umpire Bill Brennan, acceding to a request by the wily John McGraw, orders Phils captain Mickey Doolan (Phils manager Red Dooin had been ejected during the 6-run 6th) to have spectators removed from the CF bleachers, where they are waving hats, newspapers, and handkerchiefs to distract the batters.
When Doolan refuses, Brennan forfeits the game, 9 - 0, to the Giants. Bedlam ensues and later, when the two umpires and Giants players try to board the train at the North Philadelphia Station, they are attacked by fans. The police draw their revolver to control the crowd.
The Phils protest the forfeit and National League president Thomas Lynch will reverse the umpire and rule the game an 8 - 6 Phils win. The Giants then appeal. NL directors say both Brennan and Lynch are wrong, and order the game completed from the point at which it was stopped. The game will be finished October 2nd, with the outcome the same.

1919: Down 7-0 in the 8th inning in St. Louis, the Tigers come back to win 8-7. Ty Cobb hits a home run and a double.

1930: Hack Wilson returns to the Cubs lineup and drives in six runs on his 45th and 46th homers of the year to lead Chicago over the Cardinals, 16 - 4. For August, Hack hits 13 homers and drives in 53 runs.

1934: Tigers beat indians 6-1 to complete a 23-6 August that took them from tied for first place to 5 games ahead of the Yankees, en route to their first pennant in 25 years.

1942: The Giants' Mel Ott collects his 2,500th hit in a 5 - 5 tie in Chicago in game 2.

1947: The Boston Braves purchased Bobby Hogue from the Detroit Tigers.

1950: The Tigers drop out of first place for the first time since June 10 when they split a pair with the Senators, losing 3 - 2 in 11 innings, then taking the nitecap, 10 - 8.

1953: The Dodgers rip St. Louis, 20 - 4, with the help of two big innings. Dodger Jackie Robinson fans twice in the 3rd inning, while Gil Hodges walks twice in the 6th. Roy Campanella's five RBIs ties the National League season mark of most RBIs by a catcher (122).

1960: Boston 2B Pete Runnels goes 6 for 7, as the Red Sox edge the Tigers in the 15-inning opener of a twin bill. His 15th-inning double brings Frank Malzone home with the winning run to win, 5 - 4. Runnels has three more hits in the nightcap victory, 3 - 2 in 10 innings. His six hits are the most in an American League game since July 8, 1955. With 9 for 11 in the doubleheader, Runnels ties the major league record.

1961: Mickey Mantle connects for home run number 47, off the Twins' Jim Kaat, as the Yanks win, 4 - 0.

1965: Following his doctor's advice, Casey Stengel announces his retirement as manager of the Mets. He will head up Mets scouting in California. Stengel ends a 25-year managerial career that included 10 pennants with the Yankees, followed by a dismal 175-404 with the expansion Mets. The 75-year-old Stengel has been in professional baseball since 1910.

1968: In the showdown in Detroit, 53,575 fans cheer as P Earl Wilson pitches a 4-hit 9 - 1 victory over 2nd-place Baltimore. Wilson adds four RBIs on two hits, including his 5th home run of the year. RF Jim Northrup, and 3B Don Wert have 2 rbi.

1976: At Fenway Park, Jim Rice clouts a 5th-inning home run against Texas, the 100th homer this year for the Sox. They now have hit 100 homers or more for 31 straight years.

1979: The Chicago Cubs purchased Bruce Kimm from the Detroit Tigers.

1984: Jack Morris pitches a 4-hit complete game but the Tigers lose 2-1.

1984: Jim Rice grounds into his 33rd double play of the season, establishing a new major league mark. The Red Sox outfielder breaks a 1954 record set by another Boston flycatcher, Jackie Jensen.

1986: Yankee hurlers Tommy John (43) and Joe Niekro (41) become the first 40+ pitchers since 1933 to start both ends of a doubleheader. John loses, 1 - 0, and Niekro pitches five innings for a 3 - 0 victory over the Mariners.

1995: Tiger teammates Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell tie an American League record by playing in their 1,914th game together, a 10 - 7 loss to the White Sox. The record was set by Kansas City's George Brett and Frank White.
The Tigers teammates will finish their great careers playing 1,918 games together.

2002: The Cincinnati Reds traded players to be named later and David Espinosa (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Matt Boone (minors), Brian Moehler and cash. The Cincinnati Reds sent Noochie Varner (minors) (August 30, 2002) and Jorge Cordova (minors) (September 24, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2002: After marathon negotiation sessions to avoid a players' strike just hours away, Bud Selig announces the players union and owners have reached a settlement on a new four-year Collective Bargaining Agreement without the need for a work stoppage. The new agreement, called "historic" by the Commissioner, gives the owners the economic restraints they wanted as the players are assured no teams will be contracted until the 2007 season, with a revenue-sharing plan to be gradually implemented during the span of the contract.

2007: The St. Louis Cardinals traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Maroth.
The St. Louis Cardinals sent Chris Lambert (August 30, 2007) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

They reveal that the death was the result of an overdose of opioids, something which has become an epidemic in North America in recent years. Bless You Boys Tigers Blog Podcast 89 : Halfway home and the Tigers are hanging tough. 108 minutes.
The BYB staff talks baseball from a Tigers perspective.

Well here we are now, and the Tigers are actually entertaining us. The Motor City Kitties are just a game under .500 and right on the heels of the final Al Wild Card spot. Things couldn?t be going too much better.

Brandon Day and Mark Gorosh got together Friday night prior to the club?s Saturday doubleheader victories over the Twins to take stock of what we?ve seen from the surprisingly resilient Tigers over the first half. This will be another two part epic, with this episode focused on the pitching staff.

First we?ll talk about the big news of the week, namely Matt Manning and Alex Faedo getting shutdown with forearm strains. We?ll consider why the Tigers seem down on Jake Rogers, and then we?ll get into general impressions of the 2020 Detroit Tigers thus far.

We?ll talk about the rotation first, and we?re definitely feeling more optimistic about that group with Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal in the mix. Matt Boyd should settle in, and some of the concern there is overblown. Michael Fulmer is a bit of a problem, but Daniel Norris and Tyler Alexander have generally had some solutions. And finally, Spencer Turnbull just needs to go out there and play catch, because as long as he?s throwing strikes, they can?t hit him.

From there we ponder the question: Now that we have a bullpen what are we gonna do....with it?

Hope you enjoy. We?ll be back with part two, mainly focused on the lineup, the trade deadline, and who we may yet see called up from Toledo, early in the week. Take care, and thanks as always for your support.

Miguel Cabrera's RBI single was his 2,000th hit with the Tigers -- eighth Tiger in franchise history to reach the milestone.

With his 1st inning RBI single, Miguel Cabrera now has 2,000 hits with the Tigers, the 8th player in franchise history to reach that milestone & just the 2nd active player to have 2,000 hits with 1 team, joining Albert Pujols, who had 2,073 hits with the Cardinals. #DetroitRoots

Per Elias Sports, Cabrera is the 1st player to have 2,000 hits with a team other than the team he made his Major League debut with since David Ortiz, who had 2,079 hits with Boston.

Andrew Miller made his MLB debut on today?s date 14 years ago.Two months after bing drafted sixth-overall out of the University of North Carolina by the Detroit Tigers, the lanky left-hander pitched a scoreless eighth inning in a 2-0 loss to the New York Yankees. Five hundred-plus appearances later, he remembers it like it was yesterday.

?I faced some big names in old Yankee Stadium, which is hard to beat,? recalled Miller, who retired Melky Cabrera, Johnny Damon, and Derek Jeter. ?It was part of a doubleheader, as we?d gotten rained out the day I was called up, and afterward, [pitching coach] Chuck Hernandez came over and put his hand on my chest. He asked if I was going to have a heart attack.?

A top-step-of-the-dugout exchange with Marcus Thames is also fresh in Miller?s memory. On cloud nine following his one-inning stint, Miller learned that his teammate had four years earlier taken Randy Johnson deep in his first big-league at bat. Ever the pragmatist, Miller acknowledges that Thames?s debut had his own ?beat by a mile.? The previous day?s rain-delay poker game in the clubhouse was another story: Miller walked away a winner.

He wasn?t about to get a big head. Not only was Miller joining a championship-caliber club ? the Tigers went on to lose to the Cardinals in the World Series ? there was little chance he?d have been allowed to. While his veteran teammates treated him well, they also treated him for what he was ? a 21-year-old rookie with all of five minor-league innings under his belt.

?It was a shocking experience all around,? Miller admitted. ?In hindsight, it?s scary how little I knew, and how naive I was, when I got called up. Thank goodness Jamie Walker called my room and told me to meet him in the lobby to go over some ground rules and expectations. He saved me from a lot of mistakes. Of course, after that Jamie was maybe the hardest veteran on me. It was all good natured, but I couldn?t slip up around him.?

Todd Jones and Ivan Rodriguez were also important influences. The former served as a role model ? ?I learned a lot watching him prepare in the pen? ?while the latter helped him feel comfortable right from the get-go. The lefty was in the lobby of the team hotel with his family when Rodriguez ambled over and shared how impressed he?d been with the debut, adding that he was excited to have him around.

?That was over-the-top nice, and one of the coolest things that?s ever happened in my career,? said Miller, who now pitches out of the pen in St. Louis. ? I think my parents? jaws hit the floor. That whole day brings a smile to my face.?

Committee Clarity:
Gregory Soto, DET | RosterResource
When a member of a closer committee picks up a save on consecutive days, it?s a good sign that the committee might not be a committee for much longer. I don?t think we?re there quite yet, but Soto is clearly the most talented pitcher in the Tigers? bullpen. It?s just a matter of not overwhelming the 25-year-old with the pressure of being a team?s ?closer?. But he handled back-to-back save chances just fine and manager Ron Gardenhire might not want to roll the dice on anyone else with his team on a five-game winning streak.

The Tigers are drawing interest in catcher Austin Romine and left-hander Daniel Norris. The Rays are one team linked to Norris, who has impressed by posting a 2.40 ERA, 7.2 K/9, and 4.00 K/BB rate over 15 innings.
The former second-round draft pick has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and missed part of Summer Camp recovering from a positive COVID-19 test, though he has performed well as a multi-inning reliever for the Tigers this year.
Romine has also enjoyed a strong season with a .291/.309/.418 slash line over 81 PA, though his trade chip status could have a late wrinkle ? the Tigers scratched him from today?s lineup due to right knee soreness.
