Former Tiger Zumaya in Leyland's thoughts.
Former Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya has suffered another setback, but he's keeping the same attitude he has had throughout his career.

Zumaya was released by the Twins on Wednesday after he decided to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. And although this is just the latest of the many injuries Zumaya has sustained during his career, the 27-year-old is going to attempt to return to the Majors yet again.

"Well, I talked to him," Leyland said. "I don't know if he still feels the same, but by the conversation I had with him, he was going to get this surgery and give it one more shot."

Zumaya hasn't pitched in a game since June 28, 2010, when he fractured his elbow pitching for Detroit. In his five-year stint with the Tigers, he posted a 3.05 ERA and racked up 210 strikeouts in 209 2/3 innings.

Worth noting

Manager Jim Leyland started Ramon Santiago at third base on Wednesday as a way to get him some at-bats.

"If he's at third base starting games [in the regular season], we probably have physical problems," Leyland said.

With just a few Spring Training games remaining, Leyland is more concerned about figuring out the back end of the bullpen rather than filling the open No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Right-hander Rick Porcello is expected to pitch in a Minor League game on Friday.

2011: Major League Baseball creates a new 7-day disabled list for players who have suffered concussions, following a number of serious incidents last season, and controversy about concussions in professional football and hockey. Players will need to be evaluated by a medical specialist before they are allowed to return to action.
