Local bar celebrates Tigers manager Jim Leyland's smoking with a T-shirt.
from the detnews

This is great.

Well the original story line has had an addition as the Tigers legal counsel called him Monday afternoon and said the bar is expected to receive a cease-and-desist order this week.

Bar says it will keep selling T-shirts of smoking Jim Leyland.

Leyland sees encouraging signs with Inge.
Manager Jim Leyland has said that he doesn't judge players in Spring Training entirely by their results, especially veteran hitters. He appears to be taking that approach with Brandon Inge.

Inge broke out of an 0-for-13 slump on Tuesday with a second-inning single, a low line drive through the middle off Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez. He also grounded out sharply to short and walked. It wasn't nearly enough to pull up his numbers for the spring, which include a .174 batting average, but it brought some words of encouragement from Leyland when asked if Inge was in a situation where he had to be evaluated beyond the stats sheet.

"This is what I see from Brandon Inge so far: I think he's actually swung the bat pretty good," Leyland said. "He's hit a lot of balls on the button this spring. He doesn't have anything to show for it. I think he's running better, and I actually think he's swung the bat quite a bit better without much to show for it.

"He hasn't swung the bat at the pace of [Ryan] Raburn, but he hasn't the swung the bat like a .175, .200 hitter, I can tell you that. You have to just say what you see. He's actually hit some balls pretty good. And I'm not saying he's hit great, but he has hit some balls pretty hard. He has not swung the bat that bad. In fact, I think he's swung the bat pretty decent."

Detroit Tigers will look beyond batting average when evaluating Brandon Inge this spring.

First Leyland said Inge is going to have to hit, now this.....

Closer Jose Valverde is expected to pitch in a Minor League game on Wednesday rather than make the long trip to Jupiter to only pitch an inning. Relievers Phil Coke and Daniel Schlereth are on the travel roster for the game against the Cardinals.

Straight Up? Danny Worth Is Earning A Job.
from mcb-tb

The reality might very well be that Danny Worth would produce exactly what Brandon Inge could give the Tigers, but when it comes down to it, Danny Worth is earning the job and Brandon Inge is losing it. The Tigers said that Inge would have to show he could hit to earn a job. He hasn?t hit. Danny Worth has.

If all things were equal, Danny Worth should be a Tiger come opening day. Unfortunately for him, given Inge?s contract situation, all things aren?t equal. I expect the Tigers work really hard to justify a spot on the team for Brandon, and I expect that is going to make half of us a little bit angry.

March 28 in Tigers and mlb history :

1970 - In this first (and last?) "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial All-Star Baseball Classic", solo home runs by Ron Fairly of Montreal and Ron Santo of the Chicago Cubs, plus a three-run eighth-inning brings the East a 5 - 1 victory over the West.
A crowd of 31,694 watches the charity game in Dodger Stadium. Proceeds go to the late Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a memorial center planned for Atlanta. For this initial charity game, former New York Yankees great Joe DiMaggio manages the East, and ex-Dodger Roy Campanella, confined to a wheelchair since a 1958 auto accident, directs the fortunes of the West. Jim "Mudcat" Grant of Oakland sings the National Anthem in the pre-game program, and then becomes the victim of a four-hit uprising in the eighth inning that insures the outcome.
Al Kaline of Detroit beats out an infield hit to open the frame and moves to second as Tommie Agee drives Hank Aaron to the left field wall. Kaline races home on Lou Brock's double to left. Brock scores on Roberto Clemente's double and Clemente comes home on Ken McMullen's single.
