September 23 in Tigers and mlb history:

1845: The Knickerbocker Base Ball Club is formed, and Alexander Cartwright's 20 rules, presented on September 13th, are adopted.

1902: Cy Young eases to his 32nd win as Boston pounds the A's, 14 - 1.

1908: The Chicago White Sox purchased Fred Payne from the Detroit Tigers.

1908: Giants P Christy Mathewson and Cubs P Three Finger Brown battle in the most controversial game ever played. The score is 1 - 1, with two outs in the last of the 9th when Fred Merkle's failure to touch second after an apparent game-winning hit by Al Bridwell scoring Moose McCormick from third costs the Giants a 2 - 1 win; the ump calls Merkle out and rules the game a tie. Merkle's 'boner' will eventually cost the Giants the flag.

1911: Walter Johnson gives up a two-run homer in the 6th inning to Joe Jackson, the 8th four-bagger the Big Train has allowed this year. Johnson had given up just two in the previous four seasons. Cleveland whips the Senators, 6 - 1.

1911: Christy Mathewson pitches the Giants to a 6 - 2 win over the Reds. New York now leads Chicago by eight games.

1912: In Boston, 100,000 fans are on hand to greet the Red Sox after their western road trip. All business stops as the players ride from South Station to the Common where Mayor John F. Fitzgerald welcomes them. The players are given the keys to the city. Extra seating is added to Fenway Park, increasing the seating capacity to 32,000 for the World Series.

1915: Before the game at Pittsburgh, manager Fred Clarke is presented with a grandfather clock and a red leather binder signed by thousands of well-wishers. Clarke plays four innings in left field and goes 1 for 2. After reaching first, Clarke is replaced by Max Carey, and the out-going manager exits to thunderous applause. Pittsburgh wins, 8 - 4, over the Braves.

1915: In Philadelphia, Detroit's Ty Cobb swipes his 90th base of the year. Only 300 fans are on hand to witness the event. Cobb will finish with 96 stolen bases, a record that will last until 1962.

1916: Allowing only just one walk during a twin bill with the Cincinnati Reds, Phillies hurler Grover Alexander wins both ends of a doubleheader (7 - 3 and 4 - 0) to establish a National League record. The future Hall of Famer will repeat the feat on September 3, 1917 against the Brooklyn Robins at Ebbets Field.

1920: The Chicago grand jury indictment adds the names of former featherweight boxing champ Abe Attell, Hal Chase, and Bill Burns as go-betweens in the World Series scandal. Confessions, later repudiated, are signed by Ed Cicotte, Joe Jackson, Lefty Williams, and Happy Felsch.

1922: Rogers Hornsby belts his 40th homer, a solo shot in the 6th at the Polo Grounds, but the Giants hang on to win, 7 - 5.

1930: There are 42 hits in the Phillies' 19 - 16 loss to the pennant-bound Cardinals. RF Chuck Klein makes his 44th assist, well above the record of 39 set by Mike Mitchell with the Reds in 1907.

1933: Despite the 5th-place Tigers' 5 - 3 win over the Browns, manager Bucky Harris submits his resignation. Babe Ruth's name will be prominent in the newspapers as a possible replacement. Tigers will court Babe Ruth to replace him before settling on Mickey Cochrane.

1933: The Yankees make seven errors, three by Frank Crosetti, but have enough firepower to outslug the Red Sox, 16 - 12. Including in New York's 23 hits are homers by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, number 31 for each; Lou adds two doubles and a single. Sammy Byrd, Ben Chapman and Crosetti have three hits apiece, and reliever Wilcy Moore drives in the last run with his first hit of the year. The Red Sox chase winning pitcher Herb Pennock in the 6th and make the score 13 - 9, but fall short at the end.

1936: Pitching in the 10th straight Giants game, Carl Hubbell notches his 16th consecutive victory, his 26th of the year. He will resume the streak next year to reach a record 24 wins in a row.

1938: Hank Greenberg hits 2 home runs to lift his season total to 56, within reach of Babe Ruth's record of 60.
Tigers lose two to the indians.

1948: The Braves clinch the National League flag by defeating the Giants, 3 - 2. They will finish 6 1/2 games ahead of the Dodgers. Two days before the season is over, the Braves will lose their best hitter, OF Jeff Heath, who breaks an ankle sliding home against Brooklyn.

1950: The Yankees, tied for first place with the Tigers and two games ahead of Boston, open a crucial series with the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio's 1st-inning home run off Mel Parnell is all the scoring needed, as the Bombers win, 8 - 0. Ed Lopat gives up five hits, including a leadoff triple to Dom DiMaggio.

1951: Roy Campanella has four hits, including a homer off 15-game winner Bubba Church, and the Dodgers top the Phillies, 6 - 3. Preacher Roe is the winner, his record going to an amazing 22-2.

1955: The Yanks clinch the pennant by beating the Red Sox, 3 - 2.

1956: Ozzie Virgil becomes the first Dominican to reach the majors. The 23-year-old Monte Cristi native, who will also see his son Ozzie Jr. catch in the big leagues, plays third base for the Giants.

1957: The Braves clinch the National League pennant, defeating the Cards, 4 - 2, thanks to Hank Aaron's 11th-inning home run. It is the first time since 1950 that a New York team (Dodgers or Giants) hasn't finished first.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_8JKO6X...png&name=small

1961: An ailing Mickey Mantle's career-high 54th home run, his last of the regular season, helps New York beat Boston, 8 - 3. Whitey Ford leaves the game in the 5th inning, but wins his 25th.

1968: Gates Brown goes 2-for-3 in a loss to the orioles to raise his season average to .384. He will finish the year at .370, the 8th-best season for a pinch hitter in major league history.

1973: Joe Coleman pitches a 3 - 0 one-hit CG shutout against the Red Sox for his 22nd win. Jim Northrup hits 2 home runs off Luis Tiant.

1979: Lou Brock steals base No. 938 to break Billy Hamilton's unofficial record in a 10-inning St. Louis victory over the Mets, 7 - 4. The Cardinal outfielder broke Ty Cobb's mark of 892 in 1977.

1983: Steve Carlton becomes the 16th pitcher in major league history to win 300 games and the Phillies inch closer to the National League East title with a 6 - 2 win over the Cardinals.

1984: Sparky Anderson becomes the first manager ever to win 100 games in a season with two different clubs as the Tigers beat the Yankees, 4 - 1. Anderson had led the Cincinnati Reds to 100-win seasons in 1970, 1975, and 1976.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FdWFI4IX0AA-N1C?format=jpg&name=900x900

1987: Bill Madlock collects his 2,000th career hit as the Tigers beat Boston, 4 - 0, on Doyle Alexander's 2-hitter.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_aRS2fX...jpg&name=small

1995: Lance Parrish makes his final career appearance, with Toronto.
After 10 years with the Tigers, Parrish played for 6 teams in the next 9 years. After his retirement, Parrish will tell the baseball world he made a mistake leaving Detroit.

2000: Joining Frank Robinson, the Devil Rays' Fred McGriff becomes only the second player in major league history to hit 200 homers in both the American and National League.

2008: The Red Sox hand Cliff Lee just his third loss in 25 decisions in a 5 - 4 win to clinch a playoff spot. The win eliminates the Yankees from making the postseason for the first time since 1993 (not counting the 1994 season, when the postseason was cancelled, but during which the Yanks posted the best record in the American League).

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, dear readers, you are in charge of Five for Friday. I?ve been writing about new President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris all week. Now it?s your turn to create an overall fan reaction to this hire.

If you want to learn more about Harris, check out these recent blogs:

To quickly summarize Scott?s achievements, he has shot up the ladder with a number of MLB?s top organizations and worked for the best minds in the game ? Epstein, Hoyer and Zaidi to name a few. He has experience in rebuilding teams, replenishing farm systems, drafts and even the physical/biomechanics fields. He?s also worked with budgets, large and small.

As GM, he helped the Giants win 107 games last year which was a franchise record. Oh, and he has a ring.

Harris is 35 years old with an MBA and has also worked for MLB. He has been employed in baseball for 12 years. And he?s never been fired or demoted. He has also had at least 1 other offer to be a GM.

With the Cubs, he was Director of Baseball Operations and promoted by the Giants to GM. With the Tigers, yet another promotion to President of Baseball Operations, the first time for this position in Detroit.

Chris Ilitch used a dozen people directly in his search that included people inside and outside the organization. Many others were asked for input.
What do you think about this hire?

What do you think about the Tigers hiring Scott Harris?

1. Thrilled/happy

2. Leaning positive

3. Hopeful

4. Neutral

5. Not impressed

This is what happens when you hire new player development people. For the first time, the Tigers are hosting a 10-day instructional camp for 45 promising prospects in their minors system. All planned by Ryan Garko, VP of Player Development.

The camp will be led by 40 staffers and include drills and tutoring. The focus will be on the past year and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each player.
Led by the coaches, sports-science group and analytics staff.

September 24 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: Christy Mathewson shuts out the Pirates, 2 - 0, while Bill Klem continues his battle with the Giants by tossing four more, including John McGraw.

1908: Washington's Walter Johnson three-hits Cleveland to win, 2 - 1. The loss stops Cleveland's win streak at 10.

1911: After 41 straight shutout innings, Grover Alexander is scored on by the Cards in the 6th inning.

1913: Christy Mathewson scatters 11 Brooklyn safeties, walks none, to beat Ed Reulbach, 2 - 1. It is Matty's 25th win. He will finish the year with 25 victories and 21 walks in over 300 innings.

1920: In the first game of a twinbill, Babe Ruth hits his 50th home run in the 1st inning, off the Senators' Jose Acosta. He then adds number 51 in a 4-for-4 second game, a 2 - 1 win, to give the Yankees a sweep.

1921: Harry Heilmann is 3 for 4 against Walter Johnson, but Washington wins the game over Detroit, 5 - 1. Ty Cobb is so incensed by the umpiring of Billy Evans that he challenges him to a fight. The two future Hall of Famers go at it with Cobb getting the best of Evans. George Hildebrand, the second umpire assigned to the game, reports the incident to American League president Ban Johnson. When Johnson fails to act, Commissioner Landis steps in and suspends Cobb, but allows him to continue as a non-playing manager.

1923: Detroit pitcher Ray Francis, with a 3 - 0 lead over the Yankees, issues a bases-loaded walk to Babe Ruth, but hangs on for the victory.

1927: Tigers lose to NY Yankees, who set a major league record with their 106th win.

1928: The Tigers draw 404 fans for their last meeting with the Red Sox, winning 8 - 0 behind Sam Gibson's 5-hitter. Pat Simmons is knocked out in the 7th when he gives up consecutive triples to Al Wingo, batting 9th, John Stone, and Charlie Gehringer. Harry Heilmann has a home run and double for Detroit.

1929: Charlie Gehringer goes 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 triples in the Tigers 9 - 4 win over the browns. He will go on to lead the American League in runs, hits, doubles, triples, and steals on the season.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CtC3U9uW...g&name=360x360

1931: Lefty Grove wins his 31st, beating the Red Sox, 9 - 4, his 11th straight win over the Red Sox stretching back to May 26, 1930. Since July 25th of that year, Grove's record is 46-4, the best 50-decision streak in the century.

1932: Jimmie Foxx hits his 2nd grand slam in three days, giving him 57 homers for the season, but the A's lose in the 10th to Washington, 8 - 7.

1933: Detroit's Tommy Bridges reaches the 9th inning with a no-hitter for the third time this season and the fourth time in two years. He yields a pair of hits, as Detroit beats the Browns 7 - 0. Despite the win, Bucky Harris resigns as manager of the Tigers.

1934: Idle Detroit wins the pennant, as the Red Sox beat the Yankees, 5 - 0, in the season's finale at Yankee Stadium.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EFLKzB1W...pg&name=medium

1940: George Caster of the Philadelphia Athletics allows 6 home runs in one game against the Boston Red Sox. Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin and Jim Tabor connect in the 6th inning. Foxx's homer is his 500th.

1950: Mental lapses crush Tiger hopes. Due to heavy smoke from a Canadian forest fire, Detroit puts on the lights in a Sunday afternoon contest with the Indians. Cleveland's only score in nine innings is pitcher Bob Lemon's home run in the 4th, as the match is tied 1 - 1 on Johnny Lipon's homer. Lemon opens the 10th with a triple, and two intentional walks follow. With the bases loaded and one out, C Aaron Robinson thinks he has a shot at a double play by just stepping on home. Because of the haze, he does not see 1B Don Kolloway remove the force after fielding the ball hit by slugger Luke Easter, and the Indians win 2 - 1.

1957: Hal Griggs of the Senators gets Ted Williams to ground out, breaking the Red Sox slugger's streak of reaching first base 16 consecutive times. Williams later homers to win the game, 2 - 1. Williams holds the 20th Century record. For 50 years, it is believed to be the all-time record but research in 2007 will show a 17-appearance streak by Piggy Ward in 1893.

1957: The Brooklyn Dodgers play their final game at Ebbets Field. Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella & Sandy Koufax are honored in a pregame ceremony! #MLB #Baseball #History #Dodgers

https://twitter.com/i/status/1441368779577966600

1961: A dropped fly ball by Ken Hunt in the 10th gives the Tigers two runs and a 7 - 5 win over the Angels. Hunt had tied the game in the 8th with a home run. Rookie Howie Koplitz wins his first major league game, after going 23-3 with a no-hitter for Birmingham (Southern Association). Koplitz will win his first seven decisions in the Major Leagues over four years but an arm injury will limit him to a 9-7 record.

1963: Don Wert hits a solo home run to give the Tigers a 1-0 win over the senators at Tiger Stadium. Jim Bunning gets the CG shutout. In the offseason, Bunning is traded from Detroit to the phillies and will have continued success in the National League, matching his 100 plus wins and 1,000 Strikeouts from the Tigers in the A.L. This is one of the worst trades ever in Tigers history.

1967: The Twins crunch the Yankees, 9 - 2, as Dean Chance scatters nine hits for his 20th victory. The White Sox hold off the Indians, 5 - 1, while Boston racks up 18 hits in an 11 - 7 win over the Orioles. The Tigers lose a tough one. Going into the bottom of the 9th in Washington, Detroit nurses a 4 - 2 lead, only to lose it, 5 - 4. The loss drops Detroit to 4th, 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota, Chicago a game back, and Boston a half game.

1973: The New York Yankees selected Duke Sims off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1974: At Memorial Stadium with his parents, family, and friends in the stands, Tigers Legendary Rightfielder Al Kaline gets his 3000th hit.
The milestone hit is a double off Oriole hurler Dave McNally in a 5 - 4 loss to the Birds. In 5 years, Kaline will become the 10th member of the Baseball Hall Of Fame voted in on the first try.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfsxKr74fPk&t=4s&ab_channel=DetroitTigers

1976: The Ottawa Journal shows Mark Fidrych getting his first haircut since the All Star break. Jim Price's wife Patsy does the honors. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DGewkEBXcAAzSNw.jpg

1982: In the completion of a game suspended on July 9th, the Tigers beat Cleveland, 4 - 3, when reliever Ed Glynn uncorks a wild pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 18th inning and Alan Trammell scores the winning run.

1984: Tigers get their 101st win, tying the 1934 and 1961 teams for the second-most in franchise history in a 7 - 3 win over the brewers.

2002: The Detroit Tigers selected Jason Jimenez off waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

2002: The Cincinnati Reds traded players to be named later and David Espinosa (minors) to the Detroit Tigers for Matt Boone (minors), Brian Moehler and cash. The Cincinnati Reds sent Noochie Varner (minors) (August 30, 2002) and Jorge Cordova (minors) (September 24, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2003: Tigers win their second straight with a 4 - 3 win over the royals to remain at 118 losses.
They will need to go at least 3-1 in their season-ending series with Ron Gardenhire's Twins to avoid the 1962 Mets' mark of 120 losses.

2006: Tigers clinch their first playoff appearance since 1987 with their MLB-best 94th win of the season with an 11 - 4 win over the royals. Craig Monroe, Brandon Inge, and Matt Stairs hit home runs. Justin Verlander wins his 17th.

2009: Justin Verlander strikes out 11 in 7 innings as Detroit beats Cleveland, 6 - 5. It is the Indians' 11th straight loss, one short of the franchise record set in 1931.

2011: The 200,000th game in major league history (since 1876) is played today, although the total excludes certain leagues usually considered of major league caliber such as the Federal League. Officially, today's game between the Rockies and Astros at Minute Maid Park sets the historic milestone when it becomes official at 8:45 ET. The Rockies win, 4 - 2, in 13 innings.

2011: Justin Verlander falls short of 25 wins in his final start of the season, gets no decision in a loss to the Orioles.

SATURDAY SURVEY
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022 / TOTALLYTIGERSBLOG

In his introductory speech, new President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris said that there are 3 main concepts that will drive the work in Detroit. They are:

1. Acquire, develop and retain young players.

2. Create a culture of development where everyone and everything has the ability to improve.

3. Controlling the strike zone dictates everything about the game ? offense, pitching and defense.

If you need more information about why they are important, check it out here:
https://totallytigers.wordpress.com/2022/09/21/finally-2/

If you had to pick just one, which of these 3 do you believe is the most important one for the Tigers?
