WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic:

New PoBO Scott Harris told us all to expect a lot of moves when he officially takes over next week. Those moves could be in the form of both personnel and roster re-imagining.

During his tenure, former GM Al Avila failed to make any strong signings or trades and it?s expected that Harris will attempt to offset some of the $243 million Avila spent on 5 free agents by attempting to trade 1 or more of them in order to revamp the roster so it is more effective. Here are those players:

Javier Baez ? 5 years left at $120 million
Andrew Chafin ? 1 year left at $6.5 million
Austin Meadows ? 2 years left (arbitration kicks in @ app. $5 mill/year)
Eduardo Rodriguez ? 4 years left $63 mill
Jonathan Schoop ? 1 year left @ $7.5 million

Some of these players will be more valuable as trade pieces than others. Some of them, due to either salary or performance, will be more or less tradeable.

For each of them, consider what each might generate in return should they be traded.

Additionally, there is the potential that the Tigers may have to eat a portion of their salaries in order to effect a trade.

Which one of these 5 players will bring back the best return in terms of receiving new talent if he were to be traded?

Which trade has the potential to boost the Tigers? roster the most?

Which trade may bring back the most players or the highest level of talent?
Which one of these players will bring back the best return if traded?

1. Javier Baez

2. Andrew Chafin

3. Austin Meadows

4. Eduardo Rodriguez

5. Jonathan Schoop

TRULY OFFENSIVE.
Totally Tigers

Ever since he was hired, we?ve been discussing new PoBo Scott Harris? philosophy about how to build a successful baseball organization. In his press conference, he referred to 3 main concepts. The last one, he said, was the most important one and the key to winning.

It?s controlling the strike zone ? on both sides of the plate. It is the quickest way to improving the team.

Today, we?re going to look at the Tigers? offensive game?

? and just how very far they have to go.

September 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: An overflow crowd lines the outfield at Philadelphia's Columbia Park for the showdown doubleheader between the A's and Tigers. In the first game, the home team gets off to a 7 - 1 lead against 25-game winner Bill Donovan. But Rube Waddell, who relieves in the 2nd, fails to hold the lead. A 2-run home run by Ty Cobb ties it 8 - 8 in the 9th.
Both teams score once in the 11th; an umpire's ruling costs Philadelphia the game in the 14th: Harry Davis hits a long fly into the crowd in left-centerfield, ordinarily a ground-rule double. As Tiger CF Sam Crawford goes to the crowd's edge, a policeman stands up and moves, either to interfere or to get out of the way. Home plate umpire Silk O'Loughlin says there is no interference, then reverses his ruling when base umpire Tom Connolly offers a different opinion.
When play resumes, the Athletics' Danny Murphy hits a long single that would have scored Davis. The game is called because of darkness in the 17th, a 9 - 9 tie. The second game is never played. The Tigers, in first place, leave for Washington where they will win 4. They will finish 1 1/2 games in front.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EjBdmzoW...pg&name=medium

1915: Red Sox win, Tigers lose: Red Sox clinch the pennant.

1916: In his 153rd game, Tiger 3B Ossie Vitt raises his season total chances to 615, a mark that will stand for 21 years.

1917: Detroit's future Hall of Fame OF Sam Crawford retires from major league baseball at 37. In addition to his career-record 312 three-base hits, he has hit 50 inside-the-park home runs. He will play in the Pacific Coast League for several more years.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoGmDcEXgAAwCQc.png

1921: It is Rogers Hornsby Day at Sportsman's Park, and the Cardinal star celebrates by pounding out a home run and two doubles against Pittsburgh to lead the third-place Cardinals to a 12 - 4 win. Hornsby will go hitless in his last two games, dropping his final average to .397 for the year, still the best in the National League. Teammates Austin McHenry and Jack Fournier will be 2nd and 3rd in hitting in the circuit.

1926: Hall of Famer Robin Roberts was born this day in Springfield, IL.

1972: Roberto Clemente doubles off the Mets' Jon Matlack to become the eleventh major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. The hit, sadly, will be the Pirate right fielder's last, as he will die in a plane crash on New Year's Eve attempting to bring relief aid to earthquake-stricken Managua, Nicaragua.
How does Roberto rate Willie? "The greatest"... with one colorful caveat. One very happy coincidence vis-?-vis Clemente's 3,000th hit [cited above] is the fact that on hand both to witness his achievement and to welcome him into this exclusive club is none other than Clemente's old friend, mentor, role model and rival Willie Mays, currently a New York Met, if, sadly, a largely inactive one. Following a post-game photo session with this dynamic duo, the Pirate superstar reiterates his long held and frequently stated conviction regarding Mays, complete with a more specific version of his customary qualification: "Willie Mays is the greatest player I've ever seen," insists Clemente, speaking with Charley Feeney of the Post Gazette.
