Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

September 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1907: An overflow crowd lines the outfield at Philadelphia's Columbia Park for the showdown doubleheader between the A's and Tigers. In the first game, the home team gets off to a 7 - 1 lead against 25-game winner Bill Donovan. But Rube Waddell, who relieves in the 2nd, fails to hold the lead. A 2-run home run by Ty Cobb ties it 8 - 8 in the 9th.
Both teams score once in the 11th; an umpire's ruling costs Philadelphia the game in the 14th: Harry Davis hits a long fly into the crowd in left-centerfield, ordinarily a ground-rule double. As Tiger CF Sam Crawford goes to the crowd's edge, a policeman stands up and moves, either to interfere or to get out of the way. Home plate umpire Silk O'Loughlin says there is no interference, then reverses his ruling when base umpire Tom Connolly offers a different opinion.
When play resumes, the Athletics' Danny Murphy hits a long single that would have scored Davis. The game is called because of darkness in the 17th, a 9 - 9 tie. The second game is never played. The Tigers, in first place, leave for Washington where they will win 4. They will finish 1 1/2 games in front.

1915: Red Sox win, Tigers lose: Red Sox clinch the pennant.

1916: In his 153rd game, Tiger 3B Ossie Vitt raises his season total chances to 615, a mark that will stand for 21 years.

1917: Detroit's future Hall of Fame OF Sam Crawford retires from major league baseball at 37. In addition to his career-record 312 three-base hits, he has hit 50 inside-the-park home runs. He will play in the Pacific Coast League for several more years.

1921: It is Rogers Hornsby Day at Sportsman's Park, and the Cardinal star celebrates by pounding out a home run and two doubles against Pittsburgh to lead the third-place Cardinals to a 12 - 4 win. Hornsby will go hitless in his last two games, dropping his final average to .397 for the year, still the best in the National League. Teammates Austin McHenry and Jack Fournier will be 2nd and 3rd in hitting in the circuit.

1927: With the score tied 2 - 2 in the eighth, Mark Koenig triples and Babe Ruth hits home run number 60 off Tom Zachary for a 4 - 2 win. In the ninth, Walter Johnson makes his final appearance as a player. He pinch-hits for Zachary and flies out to Ruth. Ruth hits 17 homers in September, the highest month's home run output till Rudy York's 18 in August 1937.

1928: In Washington's 9 - 1 win over the Browns, Washington OF Goose Goslin, for the third day in a row, gets two hits, one a 9th inning looping single, to edge Browns OF Heinie Manush .379 to .378 for the batting title. It is Goose's only title in his 18-year career. Nats' ace Sam Jones volunteers to pitch to stop Manush, while George Blaeholder tries the same for St. Louis. Blaeholder gets Goslin in his first two at bats, but Goose then hits a 5th-inning home run.

1934: Tigers sweep a doubleheader over the browns 10 - 6 and 6 - 2, setting franchise records with 101 wins, 957 runs, 349 doubles, and the infield of Greenberg, Gehringer, Rogell, and Owen set a Major League record 462 RBI on the season. The runs and doubles records still stand as Tigers records, and the ML RBI record also still stands.
The Tigers infield was given the nickname "The Battalion Of Death".
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoGnTTnX...pg&name=medium

1934: Babe Ruth is hitless in his last game in a Yankee uniform.

1934: Coach Charley O'Leary scores a run as a pinch hitter for the Browns at age 52 - the oldest ML player ever to do so.

1934: Dizzy Dean clinches the pennant with his 30th win, 9 - 0 over the Reds, as the Dodgers again beat the Giants, 8 - 5.

1941: The Detroit Tigers drafted Roy Henshaw from the New York Giants in the 1941 rule 5 draft.
1941: The Detroit Tigers drafted Don Ross from the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1941 rule 5 draft.
1941: The New York Giants drafted Sal Maglie from the Detroit Tigers in the 1941 rule 5 draft.

1944: Hal Newhouser wins his 29th as Detroit whips Washington 7 - 3. Newhouser becomes the fifth pitcher in major league history to lead both leagues in wins, ERA, and strikeouts.
Detroit Tigers left-hander Hal Newhouser went 25-9 with 29 complete games and 63 earned runs allowed in 1945 winning a second consecutive MVP Award.
In 1946, Newhouser went 26-9 with 29 complete games and 63 earned runs allowed and just missed winning a third MVP Award.

"Prince" Hal will win his first of two consecutive MVP awards.

1945: Hank Greenberg hits a pennant-winning grand slam on the final day of the season. The Tiger left fielder's ninth-inning bases-full homer beats the Browns 6 - 3 clinching the American League flag for Detroit over the second-place Senators.

1951: The Tigers drive over the slumping Tribe 2 - 1 behind Virgil Trucks' 13th win of the year.

1960: Tigers 2 - White Sox 0. Jim Bunning (11-14) outduels Early Wynn (13-11).

1962: At Yankee Stadium, Chicago's Ray Herbert tops New York, 8 - 4. Mickey Mantle, batting leadoff to give him needed at bats, is 2 for 3 and qualifies for 2nd place in hitting (.321) with 502 plate appearances. He also hits a home run, giving him eight straight seasons of 30+ homers.

1965: Tigers 2 - Indians 0. Mickey Lolich (14-9) fires a 3-hitter; Gates Brown hits his 9th home run.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EFb95_gW...g&name=360x360

1965: Don Drysdale (23-12) pitches a 3-hitter and blanks the Braves 4 - 0. Los Angeles has now won 13 straight games, seven by shutouts.

1967: Boston beats the Twins, 6 - 4, to tie Minnesota for first place. Carl Yastrzemski's 3-run home run gives him the American League-lead with 44, but Harmon Killebrew answers with his 44th for the losers.
Meanwhile, Detroit, which had games rained out on the 28th and 29th, plays two with the Angels. Mickey Lolich wins the opener, 5 - 0, his 3rd straight shutout, and Detroit takes a seemingly safe 6 - 2 lead into the 8th inning of the nitecap. The Angels then bat around, scoring six runs, to hand Detroit a devastating 8 - 6 loss. Detroit now trails Minnesota and Boston by a half-game.

1968: The Tigers final game of the season drew 24,198 customers to bring the final season total to 2,031,847, a new franchise record.

1968: The Chicago White Sox purchased Bob Christian from the Detroit Tigers.

1968: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later to the New York Yankees for John Wyatt. The Detroit Tigers sent Jim Rooker (September 30, 1968) to the New York Yankees to complete the trade.

1971: The Detroit Tigers released John Hiller.

1972: The Tigers take their 3rd in a row from Milwaukee as John Hiller throws a 5-hitter. Aurelio Rodriguez's 3-run home run is the margin in the 5 - 1 win.
Al Kaline goes 4-for-5 with a double and a home run. The Tigers now return home to face the Red Sox in a 3-game series that will determine which team wins the East.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoGtwi4W...jpg&name=small

1972: Roberto Clemente doubles off the Mets' Jon Matlack to become the eleventh major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. The hit, sadly, will be the Pirate right fielder's last, as he will die in a plane crash on New Year's Eve attempting to bring relief aid to earthquake-stricken Managua, Nicaragua.
How does Roberto rate Willie? "The greatest"... with one colorful caveat. One very happy coincidence vis-?-vis Clemente's 3,000th hit [cited above] is the fact that on hand both to witness his achievement and to welcome him into this exclusive club is none other than Clemente's old friend, mentor, role model and rival Willie Mays, currently a New York Met, if, sadly, a largely inactive one. Following a post-game photo session with this dynamic duo, the Pirate superstar reiterates his long held and frequently stated conviction regarding Mays, complete with a more specific version of his customary qualification: "Willie Mays is the greatest player I've ever seen," insists Clemente, speaking with Charley Feeney of the Post Gazette.

1973: Last pitch at the old Yankee Stadium. Mike Hegan flies out against John Hiller and the Tigers beat the yankees 8 - 5.

1979: With his 5th-inning, solo HR, Willie Stargell passes Honus Wagner as the Pittsburgh Pirates' all-time RBI leader, bringing his career total thus far to 1,476.

1980: A's OF Rickey Henderson sets the American League single-season stolen base record with his 97th in a 5 - 1 win over the White Sox, breaking Ty Cobb's record of 96 set in 1915. Henderson will finish the season with 100 stolen bases.

1984: Tigers lose to the yankees and finish their historic season at 104-58. The Tigers started 35-5 and went 69-53 the rest of the way. Finished 15 games ahead of the second place Blue Jays.

1984: The ML umpires announce that they will go on strike at the two LCS scheduled to begin October 2 in an effort to improve their pay and job security and to change the method by which post-season assignments are determined.
MLB officials say the games will go on as scheduled using amateur umpires if necessary.

1986: The Detroit Tigers signed Ron Rightnowar as an amateur free agent.

1989: Nolan Ryan strikes out 13 Angels in a 2 - 0 three-hitter to raise his season total to 301. It is his 6th 300-strikeout season, but first since 1977.

1990: The Detroit Tigers released Jody Davis.

1990: The Detroit Tigers traded Mike Wilkins (minors) to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Mike Munoz.

1991: Lou Whitaker goes 4-for-5 with a home run in the Tigers' season finale. Pete Incaviglia and Mickey Tettleton each hit 2-run home runs in the first inning to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead in an 8-3 win over the Orioles.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_5MnTnV...ng&name=medium

1992: George Brett of the Royals gets the 3,000th hit of his career, stroking four safeties in Kansas City's 4 - 0 win over California. Moments later, Brett is picked off base.

2002: The Tigers fire manager Luis Pujols.

2002: Ryan Jackson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2003: The Detroit Tigers signed Rhiner Cruz as an amateur free agent.

2003: Ernie Young of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2007: Magglio Ord??ez has three hits to clinch the American League batting title.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EFugcv-W...png&name=small

2012: Prince Fielder's two-run homer off Jared Burton in the 8th gives the Tigers a 2 - 1 win over the twins. It's his 30th homer of the year, making him and his father Cecil Fielder the second father-son duo to both go deep 30 times in a season for the same franchise; previously, only Bobby Bonds and Barry Bonds of the Giants had done it.

2014: Tigers announce their four-man rotation for the ALDS. It consists of 3 Cy Young winners and one future Cy Young winner.
Tigers announce starting rotation for ALDS:
Game 1: Max Scherzer
Game 2: Justin Verlander
Game 3: David Price
Game 4: Rick Porcello

2016: Justin Upton finishes the month with 12 home runs, the most by a Tiger in a month since Miguel Cabrera May 2013, in the Tigers 6 - 2 win over the braves. Also with homeruns are Ian Kinsler #28 and two by Miguel Cabrera for #38 on the season.

2017: Andrew Romine of the Tigers becomes the 5th player to play all nine positions in a game, doing so on the road against the Twins. He only spends a third of an inning as the catcher - the only position he had never played before - but still manages to allow a passed ball. As a pitcher, however, he retires the only batter he faces, Miguel Sano, with the Tigers hanging on to a 3 - 2 lead in the bottom of the 8th. That will be the final score, as the Tigers get a rare win to close an awful month of September that saw them go 6-23.

2019: Austin Adams of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2019: Bobby Wilson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

A couple Fridays ago, I asked readers to submit their top 5 list of positional players they would keep for next year?s roster. I also promised to tally the results and report them.

Then a little somethin? somethin? happened in the Tigers? Front Office and the final results of that story got put on the back burner.
Until now.

Let?s pick up where we left off and get back to that poll.

If you need a refresher on that blog, check it out here:

There was a definite pattern seen in reader voting. Important to note because less than 10% of those who read TT on that date voted. (An above average percentage of reader participation for all social media platforms.)

For the record, not everyone could offer 5 positional players they would keep (which was a viable voting option). A number of readers submitted lists with less than 5 players.

And those who listed pitchers only had their remaining list of positional players tabulated.

Finally, readers who clicked ?like? for someone?s list did not count in tabulating the vote.

Now, for the results??.

The Tigers announced the following roster moves:

? Placed UTIL Willi Castro on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain
? Recalled UTIL Brendon Davis from Triple A Toledo

Tigers shutout for the 22nd time this year 7 - 0.

October 1 in Tigers and mlb history:

1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Americans, 7-3, in the first World Series game ever played. Jimmy Sebring hits the first home run in the Series, as Deacon Phillippe is the winning pitcher and Cy Young the loser.

1919: Just before the start of the World Series, the highly favored Chicago White Sox become the betting underdogs in the best-of-nine contest. Eddie Cicotte, a 29-game winner, is driven from the hill in a five-run 4th inning. The Cincinnati Reds' Dutch Ruether pitches a six-hitter and helps himself with three RBI on two triples and a single for a 9 - 1 victory.

1932: Babe Ruth, as legend has it, calls his home run against Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root in the 5th inning of Game 3 of the World Series, won by the New York Yankees, 7 - 5, at Wrigley Field. Ruth and Lou Gehrig each hit two homers for the Yankees.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fd_aZk1WYAA7a_r?format=png&name=900x900

1942: The Detroit Tigers purchased Joe Hoover from Hollywood (PCL).

1943: MLB statistics show the Chicago White Sox Luke Appling leading American League hitters with a .328 batting average, the lowest since Ty Cobb hit .324 to lead in 1908.
Conversely, of course, the pitchers' marks are topped by Spud Chandler's 1.64 ERA, the best since 1919. Chandler also has the best winning percentage at .833, on a 20-4 won-lost mark.
White Sox outfielder Wally Moses stole 56 bases after stealing only three two years before.
The veteran Mel Ott hits only .234 for his New York Giants, but he still has 18 home runs, all at the Polo Grounds.

1944: At Briggs Stadium: Last-place Washington beats Detroit 4-1 depriving the Tigers of a tie for the pennant with St. Louis.

1945: Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Rod Carew, born this day in Gat?n, Panama.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fd_bMjuXgAAEGhy?format=png&name=360x360

1949: The Detroit Tigers traded players to be named later to the Cleveland Indians for Jim Wilson. The Detroit Tigers sent Lum Harris (October 1, 1949), Anse Moore (October 1, 1949) and George Byam (minors) (October 1, 1949) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade.

1950: George Kell hits 2 doubles in the Tigers' season finale, a loss to the indians, to finish with a career high and AL-best 56. The Tigers' Vic Wertz is second in the AL with 37.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoBm9-JW...jpg&name=small

1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The homer eclipses Babe Ruth's 34-year-old single-season home run record.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1576177794328850433

1961: The Tigers win their fourth straight game to finish with 101 wins. Norm Cash hits his 41st home run,
Al Kaline hits his AL-leading 41st double and wins another Gold Glove for his incredible defensive play in Rightfield.
Recent call-up Bill Freehan hits a 2-run single.
The upstart Tigers end up 2nd to the Yankees but turned a lot of heads in '61.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_1OVQOU...pg&name=medium

1967: At Tiger Stadium, on the final day of the season, California defeats Detroit 8-5, in the second game of a doubleheader to dash the Tigers? hopes of tying Boston for the pennant and finish one game out of first place.
Dick McAuliffe grounds into a double play to end the season: it's just the second time McAuliffe grounded into a double play all year.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoBnopuW...pg&name=medium

1970: John Hiller strikes out 11 in a 2-hit complete game shutout, and ties an American League record with 7 straight strikeouts.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoBn8acX...jpg&name=small
After the game, Tigers fire manager Mayo Smith, who led the team to the 1968 world championship.

1972: Aurelio Rodriguez hits a 3-run home run: Tigers beat the brewers to set up a season-ending showdown with Boston to decide the AL East.

1976: In his only start of the season, John Hiller pitches a 4-hit shutout and the Tigers beat the brewers 5 - 0.

1980: Mark Fidrych allows 4 runs in 5 innings but gets the win in his final career appearance and the Tigers beat the blue jays 11 - 7.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DoBpcu8X...jpg&name=small

1980: With much media and fan pressure, the Boston Red Sox fire manager Don Zimmer.

1983: Jack Morris strikes out 2 to finish with a career high and AL-best 232 Ks on the season.

1988: At Tiger Stadium, The Tigers hold their first Fan Appreciation Day.

1989: Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins and Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres each win batting titles on the final day of the regular season. Puckett goes 2-for-5 to edge Carney Lansford, .339 to .336, while Gwynn goes 3-for-4 to beat Will Clark, .336 to .333.

2000: Dusty Allen hits a game-tying home run in the bottom of the 9th before Hal Morris hits a game-winning RBI single. Allen is one of three Tigers to homer in his last at-bat with the team. Shane Halter plays nine positions in the Tigers walk off 12 - 11 win over the twins.

2002: Matt Perisho of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2003: A.J. Hinch of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: The Detroit Tigers selected Alexis Gomez off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

2004: Ichiro Suzuki surpasses George Sisler's 84-year-old record of 257 hits in a single season. After this game, Ichiro has collected 259 hits in the season with two games left; he will finish the season with 262 hits.

2006: After leading the Royals 6-0, the Tigers lose 10 - 8 in 12 innings, completing a season-ending sweep that drops them out of the division lead and into the wild card spot.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DocFAATX...pg&name=medium

2008: The Detroit Tigers signed Steven Moya as an amateur free agent.
2008: Francisco Cruceta of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2012: The champagne also flows in Kansas City, MO, where the Tigers defeat the Royals, 6 - 3, to clinch the AL Central title. Miguel Cabrera hits his 44th home run in the game. In deference to their star slugger, who is leading the AL in all three triple crown categories but who has had trouble with alcohol abuse in the past, the Tigers choose to celebrate with an alcohol-free bubbly.

2014: Major League Baseball announces that it will test some new rules to speed up the flow of the game during this coming Arizona Fall League season. Hitters will no longer be allowed to step out of the batter's box during an at-bat; pitchers will need to begin their pitching motion within 20 seconds of receiving the ball; a batter will take his base automatically when an intentional walk is called for, without the need for the pitcher to throw four pitches outside the strike zone; teams will be limited to three mound conferences, now called time-outs, per game; and there will be a set maximum time before the first pitch is delivered following a change of innings or a pitching change. If these changes prove successful, they may well be introduced at all levels of organized baseball.

2014: The Tigers announce their four-man rotation for the ALDS.
It consists of 3 Cy Young winners and one future Cy Young winner.
Game 1: @Max_Scherzer
Game 2: @JustinVerlander
Game 3: @DAVIDprice14
Game 4: @RickPorcello

2017: Andrew Romine plays nine positions.

2022: The Dodgers become only the third team in the history of the National League (and seventh in the majors) to win 110 games in a season with a 6 - 4 win over the Rockies. Only the 1906 Cubs and 1909 Pirates have preceded them in the senior circuit.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The 2022 baseball season is coming to a close next week. (Phew!)

For many Tiger fans, the most exciting part of the year will start on October 6th when new President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, takes over and tries to right the rebuilding ship.

But until that date, let?s look back at the Tigers? season. There were a few good things that happened.

Miguel Cabrera joined the 3,000 hit club and we watched him inch his way up the ladder and pass other baseball greats. He also achieved over 500 HRs and combined with hits, is only 1 of 4 legitimate players to have done so.

Riley Greene made his debut and constantly dazzled us with his plays in CF.

And finally, the Avila Reign of Error ended with the hiring of President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris.

Which one of these was the highlight of your year?
Which of these events was the highlight of the year for you?

1. Miguel Cabrera passing 3,000 hits/500 HRs

2. The debut of Riley Greene

3. The hiring of PoBO Scott Harris

A.J. Hinch confirmed what Tigers president Scott Harris told Mitch Albom on Friday: Miguel Cabrera will be back next year.

Hinch: "We expect Miggy to be here. We expect him to do his part in the offseason to prepare himself to be healthy and productive and the icon that he is."

In 151 plate appearances since July 6, Miguel Cabrera is hitting .146/.212/.212. His average has fallen from .308 to .251.
He will play the home finale tomorrow at Comerica Park, his 1,000th game played at Comerica.

people act like the first 300AB of Miguel's season didn't happen..last year..more aggressive treatments..play as needed..300 AB for the season max...the idea that anyone who earns then deserves the AB more than Miguel is is gonna get cheated out of playing time is ridiculous..
glad to see Miguel is coming back..curious what the plan is for him both in AB and offseason treatment..in case you didn't feel like the most prolific modern day first ballot Detroit Tigers future HOF deserved to go out on his terms..FUCK YOU THEN..
