DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have had an extended winning streak (through Friday?s games). They have now moved out of the basement of the AL Central ? but just barely.

They have also just now been eliminated from the potential of losing 100 games but 99 losses is still a possibility.

While the team has been in the bottom 3 for most of the season, they now appear to have moved up and among the 4th ? 6th worst.

While this may be a good thing, it also puts them in a worse position for next year?s draft order. The new CBA changed the system where the 3 worst teams have the best ? and equal ? chance of selecting the #1 pick. The ones ranking #4 through #6 have slightly lower chances of scoring the top draft pick.

This process will work through a lottery system.

After the bottom 6 teams, the rest of the order (also done via lottery) will be determined by each team?s winning percentage in reverse order.

Currently, the Tigers sit as the 6th worst team, which would garner them the second-best odds. But they are close to ending up in the 7th position or higher which would further decrease their chances of receiving one of the top draft picks.

Potentially, they still have the ability to finish the year at the #3 position, which would put them into the top tier of draft selection.

After Saturday?s game, there are only 5 games left in the season.

What should the Tigers do? Play their best and go for the wins and therefore potentially lower their draft order?

Or should they finish the year by tanking in order to garner better odds in their draft selection order?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What should the Tigers prioritize as they finish out the year?

1. Win as many games as possible.

2. Tank in order to improve their draft order odds.

I want to clarify my viewpoint on Torkeslon..am I worried about him..NO
Do I think he needs to get a ton more rhythm in his set up and swing.. 100% YES
Does he need a small tweak in his attack angle..absolutely.
Does he need to be more aggressive earlier in the count..100% yes.

Wentz has lost 3 MPH on his FB..and it hurts him..these cutter also need to be down..and either backdoor the plate away or run of the plate inside.
If I had one hope for Joey Wentz this offseason..I would truly stress conditioning..needs to not lose velocity and be prepared to throw 140 consistent innings..has as much upside and repetoire variety as anyone on the staff...player dev have optimized the hell out of him in 2022.
If Wentz can command the baseball like he has this month..he is the Tigers second best pitcher going into next year.
a tip of the cap to the Detroit Tigers player development staff on Joey Wentz..you took a marginal command intriguing stuff guy..which in the end only ends up breaking your baseball heart..and turned him into something very intriguing..one more coat of polish..and damn..

Tigers veteran Miguel Cabrera will turn 40 years old in April, shortly after beginning the final guaranteed season of the mega extension he signed back in 2014. Though he?s not quite the hitter he was back then, he?s still going to be a part of Detroit?s plans next season. ?We expect Miggy to be here,? manager A.J. Hinch tells Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. ?We expect him to do his part in the offseason to prepare himself to be healthy and be productive and be the icon that he is.?

As noted by McCosky, Cabrera?s 2022 got off to a nice start, as he kept his batting average above .300 into July. However, he has slumped badly since then while dealing with various nagging injuries, currently sitting on a batting line of .251/.299/.315 for the year. That production amounts to a wRC+ of 76, or 24% below league average, which is well below Cabrera?s previous low of 92 from 2017.

Going into the season, it seemed as though Cabrera was on the verge of being nudged out of the club?s plans, as they spent aggressively in the offseason to try to compete in 2022. With the promotion of first base prospect Spencer Torkelson, it was fair to wonder if an awkward situation was approaching with the club trying to compete and Miggy standing in the way. Instead, Torkelson and the Tigers both fell way shy of expectations, with the youngster hitting just .197/.281/.301 so far this year and club sporting a record of 64-93.

The fact that Cabrera is still owed $32MM next year doesn?t mean he is immune from being cut from the team if he continues to underperform. Just last year, the Angels designated Albert Pujols for assignment in May while he was playing out the final year of his contract at a $30MM salary. Both Hinch and new president of baseball operations Scott Harris voiced their support for Cabrera being a part of the 2023 club, though how much of a role he gets to play is likely to be determined.

Riley Greene and Bobby Witt Jr. are Only Getting Better.

Riley Greene was 18 years old and only three months removed from being drafted fifth-overall when he was first featured here at FanGraphs in September 2019. Harking back to our earlier conversation, I asked the Detroit Tigers rookie outfielder what he knows now that he didn?t know then.

?When I first started, I didn?t really think about much,?replied Greene, who celebrated his 22nd birthday four days ago. ?I kind of just went up there, and was free-swinging almost. I was a young kid who didn?t really know anything. Since then, I?ve come up with a routine and am more educated on what I need to do at the plate. I have a plan. Whether it works or not is up the baseball gods.?

The extent to which the baseball gods have been on his side is relative. Greene isn?t exactly setting the world on fire ? he has a 100 wRC+ and five home runs in 400 plate appearances ? but again, he?s been old enough to take a legal drink for barely over a year. He also came into the season with just 198 professional games under his belt, only 55 at the Triple-A level. His potential far exceeds his present.

In some respects, Greene is much the same player Detroit drafted in the first round out of Oviedo, Florida?s Paul J. Hagerty High School.

?My swing is kind of what it?s always been,? Greene told me this summer. ?Whatever works works, so I haven?t really tried to change much. At the same time, I?m bigger and stronger, so while it might be a little different, what I?m trying to do with my swing is essentially the same. I feel like I?ve always had a pretty good feel for the strike zone, and I want to stay in the gaps. As much as anything, I try to keep things simple.?

A player he no longer shares a clubhouse with helped educate him to the ins and outs of major-league baseball. Prior to being dealt from Detroit to Atlanta in August, Robbie Grossman served as a mentor to the young outfielder, going out of his way to share advice. Greene credits Grossman?s taking him under his wing as a valuable part of his rookie-year experience.

The Yankees tie the game at 4 in the 7th on Brett Gardner's two-run double, but Delmon Young hits a solo homer off Rafael Soriano in the bottom of the inning to make Verlander a winner.

2012: Miguel Cabrera goes 0 for 2 in a 1 - 0 Tigers win to end the season but still winds up as Major League Baseball's first Triple Crown winner since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. Cabrera led the American League with a .330 average, 44 homers and 139 RBI. 103 years to the day that Ty Cobb clinched his Triple Crown.
He survives a late charge by Curtis Granderson.

2014: The Orioles once again victimize the Tigers' bullpen in the 8th inning to win Game 2 of the ALDS, 7 - 6. Trailing 6 - 3, they score four runs against Joba Chamberlain and Joakim Soria after scoring 7 off three relievers in the same inning the previous night and now lead the series, two games to none.

2015: Max Scherzer of the Nationals pitches his second no-hitter of the season, 2 - 0 over the Mets, also striking out 17 batters. Only an error by SS Yunel Escobar keeps him from a perfect game. He is only the fifth pitcher, and the first since Nolan Ryan in 1973, to throw two no-hitters in a season, and his game score of 104 is the highest since Kerry Wood's 20-strikeout performance in 1998. The 17 Ks set a new Nationals team record, and tie Ryan's record for most in a no-hitter.

2016: End of an era. Vin Scully calls his final Dodgers game after 67 MLB seasons.
