Austin Jackson placed on DL. He is tied for 4th-most valuable player in MLB right now (according to bb-ref WAR, 2.4) even after missing past week.

Masterson admitted postgame he quick-pitched Dirks on play that got Brookens and Leyland ejected.

Today was Verlander's 3rd start of 8+ IP and 1 run or fewer allowed. Only Felix Hernandez has more such starts (5).

Verlander is just the 5th pitcher this season with a CG loss.
(Neftali Feliz, Peavy, Lester, Anthony Bass).

Indians not fooled by Verlander's changeup. 3 of the 6 changeups put in play by Indians went for hits, including Choo's HR.

Verlander hit 101.5 mph on radar gun today (according to our data). That's his 2nd-fastest pitch since 2009 (101.6 on 9/29/10 at CLE).

Tony Gwynn calls his ex-player, new Tigers CF Quintin Berry.
from the freep

Berry became the first Tiger to make his debut by starting at leadoff since Jackson on Opening Day 2010. Berry is the 16th Tiger to do so since 1918, according to Baseball-Reference.com. Others in that group include Ron LeFlore, Jake Wood, Fred Haney and another Berry -- Kalamazoo's Neil Berry, an infielder who hit leadoff for the Tigers in his 1948 debut.

Webvideo Leyland, Brookens get tossed.
Jim Leyland and Tom Brookens protest that Justin Masterson of the Indians balked, and get ejected from the game. incompetent umps don't know the rule, what were they looking at.

Webvideo Verlander's strong start.
Justin Verlander holds the Indians in check, allowing just a pair of runs on five hits, and striking out the side in the eighth.

May 25 in Tigers history:

1937: Tiger catcher/manager Mickey Cochrane is beaned in the head by a pitch from New York’s Bump Hadley. Cochrane is unconscious for seven days and nearly days as a result. The future Hall of Famer never plays another game in the big leagues, though he returns to manage Detroit the next season.

1975: Mickey Lolich wins his 200th game for the Tigers, becoming just the third pitcher to win that many for Detroit. In a rain-shortened game in Chicago, Lolich beats the White Sox, 4-1 with seven innings of work. The lefty will win 207 games for the Tigers, third all-time behind Hooks Dauss and George Mullin.
